Barely more than 24 hours after the Nokia stunner of the century -- the company's
announcement of the Booklet 3G "mini laptop" -- we're starting to get some
more details about the 10.1-incher.
Netbook News is reporting an unnamed source that claims the netbook will run $799 -- certainly not a netbook price. The Booklet will boast a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530, and will reportedly boast a 120GB HDD, plus integrated 3G, a swappable SIM card, A-GPS, Bluetooth and WiFi. There is no official word on pricing or release date, but we're expecting to hear tell of all that at Nokia World (which is on September 2nd). There are a few previously unseen shots after the break -- and hit the read link for even more.

Got some news from a friend about the details.
Just for comparison, the Dell Inspiron 11z has an Intel Celeron 723 (single core) 1.2 Ghz processor with 800 Mhz FSB, 1MB L2 cache, and 64 bit instruction set at 10 watts max.
The Atom Z530 (single core) 1.6 Ghz processor FSB runs at 533 Mhz with 512K L2 cache and 32 bit instruction set at 2 watts max.
At $399, the Inspiron is a bargain, IMO.
Nice specs. I'd pay about half what Nokia's asking for it though.
no one's forcing you to buy the netbook
no one forced you to buy the n97
no one likes the "f-ing" "f" word
LAWL NOKIA FAILS
But seriously 800$ for a PoS netbook with a Nokia sticker?
You can get a acer 1410T which has an Intel solo processor, 2gb ram, and 250gb hdd for half that lol. which is way better than this junk hardware. FAIL I SAY FAIL
I mean seriously for 800$ u can get a real laptop lol.
price is FAIL
unnamed source also claims that world will end two days before the day after tomorrow.
going to bunker now
Gotta love how everyone immediately jumps to the price and then complains. If this was a mini 9, then yes that price would suck monkey balls.
I don't know of a single other netbook that actually has come out with a Hi-res screen or can ever touch a 12 hour battery life. THIS IS MEANT FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT AN ULTRA-PORTABLE EVEN BY NETBOOK STANDARDS, and yes that 799 was European priced converted, which is likely a good bit too high. $599 sounds like a more likely number, and is a damn good price for what you get.
that' 12 hours with minimum brightness, wifi off, etc. Aftermarket 8-cell Dell Mini batteries ($65) have been tested to give 8 hours of runtime with max brightness, wifi on and downloading torrents.
I don't understand the price hate. Do you really expect aluminum and glass at $500? I think Nokia is going about this exactly the right way - ultrapremium. 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, A-GPS, HD and HDMI out, Z530 (Which is what... 33% more powerful than a 230?) and more in a pretty slick aluminum body running Win7 with a supposed 12hrs of battery life? There isn't a netbook on the planet that I have seen with specs anywhere near. This looks like a capable all-day laptop replacement.
I'd prefer the supposed 400 Euro price, but I don't think $800 isn't out of line.
Unfortunately, the review also says it stutters playing Flash video and only gets about 6 hours of battery life. Not worth $800 when there are full blown laptops capable of much more that cost less.
Mark, what Review? I don't think there is one out there yet for this netbook.
mark failed his Reading Assessment tests in elementary school.
the article he is referring to was talking about a supposedly "similar," already-on-the-market netbook. the author *assumes* this will have similar performance (under certain hypothetical circumstances), which all amounts to nothing.
Disappointed they are only using a single core Atom proc.
Nokia is trying to pull another vaio p type thing. Not going to happen.
Vaio P 1.4lbs, this thing 2.7lbs, There's no comparison.
Way too overpriced but maybe it´ll get other other companies to integrate those features into products below 500 bucks.
deff a good way to look at it
If it had TEGRA! you know more battery life, better graphics, and maybe worth the price?!
Um... doesn't Tegra use the ARM chipset? Di you mean Ion?
Aluminium body is nice, but not worth it for that price.
This is one of the best designed netbooks I've seen yet next to the hp 5101. Sorry, but most netbooks look and feel like a child's toy. Is this worth eight Benjis? No. I'm a huge Nokia fan, but when your company is sliding, don't try and sell over-priced hardware.
$799?? They're kidding, right?
I would consider it at $399, cause it's so slick.
Probably they will offer it through some phone company at a discount. At that point, I would shuck out $199 for it. Maybe.
Nokia is the next Polaroid
This is the internet, people love the word fuck.
People should get some perspective. A freakin Win7 OS by itself already costs around 50 bucks.
A very rough breakdown of the cost:
OS: $50
HDD: $20
Memory: $20
a-gps chip: $10
Atom CPU: $50
3G: $40
screen: $40
chassis: $100 (including motherboard, chipset)
battery: $30
manufacturer margin: $50
reseller margin: $50
warranty uplift
logistics etc
at least $450+ taxes...
You must be new here! Welcome to the internet EI8HT!
I have the right to voice my frustration with Nokia over their overpriced underperforming electronics.
The screen costs quite a bit more then that. Standard netbook screens as mass produced on such a large scale they cost next to nothing. Hi-res screens... even HP failed at getting one out. 3G and GPS chipsets also have licensing costs as well as extra R&D costs due to more strict regulation. You can't just slap these things together and expect them to work let alone being able to sell them. Us 1st world consumers honestly pay way too much for materials and not enough for R&D.
Well that's not really a HD screen yet (basic is around 1024x576 / 1280x768). You can have 15.4" 1920x1200 res screen on laptops for aprox $150 (manufacturer cost). The $40 may be a bit on the low side but not by a huge margin, less than a factor of two off.
No...... Just no...... Thats no real way to make a netbook and price it like that......
Why do you have to talk about things you don't know poopoo about?
I have an N97 (beside an HTC Hero I got in exchange of the disappointing iPhone 3GS, and an HTC touchHD) and while I admit that when it came out of its box it was plagued by some annoyng troubles, now after the constant stream of over the air updates (more than one a day in the last 3 weeks, the last one just today), fixes and two new ROMs in three weeks, provided by Nokia ; and some new 3G themes, wallpapers. apps and programs, chosen from one of the 100s of free ones available from the dozens of S60 dedicated web pages or the OVI store; the N97 has become a real killer machine as fast as smartphones with better cpus andmore Ram because Symbian requires less power to run than win mob or Android, just like Linux needs less than Vista or OSX.
So much so in fact that now I prefer it to both my HTCs , which are very good smartphones in their own right.
As for the N97 mini , I am not intersted on it either, but before judging it try at least to see it in 3D reality if you pretend to be taken seriously.
$799? Really? Nokia, this is not a phone. Everybody knows how cheap standard netbook components are. At most this probably only cost Nokia less than $200 to make. A $500 price point would be more reasonable. Maybe they see Sony's P series and think "Oh, let's match their pricing."
Well you clearly don't know what the components cost. Just the 3G card cost depending on the manufacturer $50-80. VistaHomeBasic costs around $40, Premium more. Honestly, get a clue. 2GB DDR2/3 is around $20. And as I previously stated, the HDD adds another $20++ (a bigger disk is not much more), a cheap Atheros WLAN chip costs around $10, Intel 5300 over $20, the Atom CPU and the chipset costs around $50+20 and I guess the 6cell? battery has to be more than $30. A one year warranty is not much, I'd say $10 including support. As the years go the warranty cost goes up considerably, I'd say aprox $70 for a collect and return. These are the prices the manufacturer has to pay for the OEM partner. On top of that you have to factor development cost, manufacturers margin and still leave something for the reseller and get a reasonable MRP where you can discounts to promote sales. The margins are really slim in the PC business.
I guess you don't work for a PC manufacturer do you?
well if you want to keep something really cheap then you have to cut some specs..so in the end you'll get a crappy plastic case instead of a highquality plastic/metall based case which will start make noises when you use it or the battery will be awful bad so that you have to plug it in after every 2.5h instead of the claimed 12h..of course you can argue that you can get a replacement battery for 100-200$ but it aint the same...quality has always a price and of course R&D as well..
now compared with Nokia Acer/Lenovo/HP/... are quite cheap with their netbooks because they want to sell as many units they can, they care less about the margin they get from each unit. it's more likely a game about publicity to claim we've got the netbook market in our hands, it can be assumed that a happy acer-netbook user will become a happy-acer-notebook-/desktop user sooner or later since they had this good experience with their netbook brand.
Don't get too aroused by the anonymous source. Nokia is a giant in cell phone manufacturing, and triggers much love and hate. So anytime they try to enter a different market, you'll expect to have some pretty harsh hating, in this case probably as a fake rumor taking the hype of their product away.
Just some wishful thinking.
Since everyone else is complaining so will I......LOUD NOISES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
An unnamed source just told me it will cost $49, no wait another unnamed source just told me it will cost $999, which is right ? you could probably judge if they were named...................................
Who cares about the states ? In the UK we can get most netbooks and some cheap laptops for free on an 18 month contract, this Nokia will be subsidized by carriers and sold with contracts not sold through best buy.
I find it amusing that people are getting so worked up and critical over a rumored price. Don't you think that a company that sells OVER 1 MILLION DEVICES EACH DAY knows how to determine the optimal price point for its products?
i'll take two.
Not worth a penny over $599.
Design and build quality look really awesome.
Best design for a netbook yet, best specs... Definitely make me want one...
I think it's stange for Nokia to announce/leak a price in $. They are usually leaked in €. And if that's a converted price, it would never have been 799$... Just my thoughts.
If real, this price is terrible though. Let's wait for september the 2nd.
here you can see more detail .
