Polycarbonate MacBook to live on, be redesigned?
It might seem like Apple's been ignoring its non-Pro MacBook line lately -- even doing hardware updates on the sly -- but consumers haven't, and they've been lapping up that solitary SKU with unabated enthusiasm. No surprise then that Cupertino would have bigger plans on the horizon, and AppleInsider claims Apple's engineers are already hard at work on an "industrial design overhaul" for the humble 13-incher, with some configurations expected to come in under the current $999 price point. Great news if you're lusting after a Mac, but still want to be able to buy groceries -- right, Giampaulo?

Maybe because people like being able to easily replace the batteries in their laptops.
They're cheaper. They're also much sturdier (in a structural sense) than any other plastic laptop I've seen on the market. Haven't heard much about the cracking issues but I don't own one.
I've had my whitebook for a year and it still looks just like the day I bought it. It certainly looks a lot better than the dull grey Macbooks.
Yeah, I'm sure it's the battery... sheesh. So how many fully charged batteries do u carry for your laptop and mobile? Maybe 3 or 4, how do u swap n charge them, sit there watching, set an alarm?
maybe the price/performance comparison to the 13" Pro
or that it has 2 ports for audio, not one, and both are digital. The FireWire 400 perhaps...
If they bring in a 12-inch iteration, then they'll have their answer to the Netbook right away. Heck, they've already said thatt the 13-incher is their equivalent, all it needs is a price cut and a bit of a refresh to get it selling.
Redesign and turn this into the Mac Netbook
Anyone who has a MacBook with a cracked palm rest should be eligible for free repair, even those out of warranty.
I prefer the silver instead the plastic design
How about $700 instead, I'm waiting for that price point
Why do my replies never show? Engadget hates me!
'cause your picture is creepy.
I was about to complain about your strange and crude profile picture involving someone looking in horror upon a couple of flies getting it on, but it turns out the flies were in fact on my screen. Still, the strangeness of your picture stands...
Will it have exploding batteries?
Yeah it's made of explodium.
Are you trying to make fun of Apple, because Sony made those batteries...
I know totally. It's like Apple doesn't actually make anything do they? Apple did approve the design and testing though.
Yes, they made their way past design and testing at Apple, as well as at HP, Dell, and Toshiba.
HP and Dell would kill to be proprietary like Apple is, most OEM's would and they are all pretty bad. Part of the reason I build my own computers and don't own a laptop or smartphone or mp3 player or xboxen. It is impossible to escape the halfassedness of the wonderful world of consumer electronics these days. I remember going through the Dell online store once and chuckling about how the warranty price was 1/4th the cost of the laptop.
I love Apple laptops (for running Windows and OS X), but I'll always build my own desktops. Building is fun, even when Dell has a sale and turns out to be less expensive.
...though exploding laptops are still hilarious.
I'm usually annoyed at people ranting about the comment system, but this was supposed to be a reply...
What happen to the unibody design? I thought that was the plan, shifting everything to unibody.
I agree that the unibody macs are pretty nice. That being said, I assume those who have claimed the the plastic macs to be the sturdiest 'plastic' notebook have never used any of the Lenovo T series. There is really no comparison, a Lenovo with the carbon fiber reinforced plastic and magnesium frame is a much more solid computer (with a much better keyboard).
Any hints on what the updates might be?
Coz I'm really looking forward to buying my first mac. I was gonna purchase it in September.
Should I wait for the updates?
IT'S GONNA BE REPLACED BY THE APPLE TABLET!!!
Everyone's predicting the tablet will cost like 600-700 dollars, but that would require it simply being a huge iphone - remember that the 16 GB iPhone 3GS costs like 650 unsubsidized. Also a huge iphone would not be very practical, the tablet needs to be a full-fledged computer, and Apple said so themselves that they can't make a high quality computer for 500 or 600 dollars
Also, apple normally keeps their macbooks and macbook pros really separate, but the plastic MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pros are really similar in specs, price, and screen size....It makes most sense for apple to replace the macbook with a tablety ebooky thing and then the pros and macbooks would actually be different!
Nice to see Apple attempting to stay under the $1K mark. Now, if they'd just get the Mac Mini prices down in to the realm of reason...
Huh...
They could make it a 12" model and say $699 and this would be the "netbook" / return of the 12" Powerbook everybody's been waiting for / wanting.
you need a non pro version. The whole concept of a pro computer doesn't make sense if there is no alternative.
They should just make all the laptops aluminum. It is annoying how to have stayed with the plastic for so long. Oh well I am not interested I have an aluminum unibody macbook pro.
