Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
GERMANY!
You know the Germans make good stuff!
In other news, Link2877 has recently been found guilty for punching a hooker IN the mouth.
you're gonna love my nuts!
so I was roasting nuts in the oven at work today and I excaimed "my nuts!" when I realized they were almost burning. its an open kitchen so there were some lols and what not from the diners.
THIS IS AN OUTRAGE. Somebody has asked if this has a capacitive touchscreen but nobody said Android yet? .. Engadget readers, i am disappoint! what has become of this place.
Who with right mind will pay this kind of money? Not to mention their OS sucks big time!
Does this thing have a capacitive screen?
no... read some of the other artices under the "Related Articles" section.
I wish this thing had the frequencies for AT&T 3g. :\ Hopefully we get a maemo device that will run on AT&T.
According to Forum Nokia and the specs page, it DOES support 850/1900 MHz
To those of you who downrank someone for asking a tech-related question in a tech forum: go fuck yourselves. You think the Engadget comments section is only for semi-witty remarks and hating on Paul A Chapel? While I agree those are definitely excellent uses of server space, someone shouldn't be downranked just for asking a simple question. So again, at the risk of probably (and regrettably) violating Engadget's posting rules, fuck each and every one of you who needlessly go out of their way to downrank another poster for asking a question, and cheers to the rest of you.
You're being downranked because every previous article refers to it having a resistive screen.
Plus you're a dick.
Well, OK, you're not.
But what's life without random insults?
I'll just wait till it comes subsudised by one of the telecoms here in Italy and then I'll buy it.
No, it doesn't. Nokia hasn't learned anything...
Like the fact that modern resistive touchscreen technology has lots of different advantages compared to capacitive like accuracy and price?
Well apparently they didn't pass on the savings in this case! And the aren't any more accurate. The only advantage other than price is that they can be controlled using anything, whereas capacitative touchscreens need something... capacitative.
Capacitative touchscreens are also more transparent and require only touch rather than pressure.
Resistive screens are more accurate. Back to tech school.
And btw. Americans who pay $30/month data plan (instead of $15/month plan from the same carrier) for 2 years aren't allowed to bitch about phone prices.
Resistive touchscreens are more accurate. Unless of course you have freakishly thin fingers that can double as a stylus.
Having used both I would say that capacitive screens are easier to use, smoother and better at moving things around. Resistive screens are more accurate and less hassle if you want to do something quickly - like open a link on a web page. They also mean you can have smaller sized devices.
"Resistive touchscreens are more accurate."
Yeah. That's why capacitive screens are more touch-friendly...
Seriously - they are more accurate, but you HAVE to be very precise when using them, e.g. by using a stylus or your fingernails. Just use a 5800 or any other device with a resistive screen to experience it yourself...
Eh... I do have a 5800. I never use the stylus with the exception of the browser for small links and when I want to use the mini-QWERTY keyboard - which is usually in the browser. It's finger friendly apart from that.
I appreciate choice. Some do not.

Nokia needs to try harder
If you're first then pigs can fly.
fail
YOU need to try harder
"Both sites are actually listing it for €599 (US $860), or €99 more than what we heard yesterday. A pretty huge discrepancy, to be sure, but it's not unlike Nokia to have a flagship phone fluctuate in price. "
A strange thing that Engadget has never heard about taxes. Maybe they don't exist in the States. But VAT in Germany is 20%, 19% in Italy. The price before taxes was 500€. 500€ x 1.2 = 600€. What's so hard about that?
As far as I know, taxes in the States are the same as taxes in Canada; that is to say they aren't VAT, so our "price" is not the same as the price you'd pay in a lot of European countries.
Good catch, though.
The nokia preorder page says "inkl. MwSt. zzgl" in germany, or "Prezzo IVA inclusa" in italy which in english means including VAT.
If the german VAT is 19% and the italy one is 20%, the huuuuge discrepancy is +4€ in germany and -1€ in italy, as both countries has it listed as 599€.
For future reference, in europe all prices are VAT included, unless you are bying a industrial scale cement mixer ad only then it might, and only just might be without VAT.
No point in pointing that out to Engadget. They allready know it. Posting totally braindead stuff is just a way to generate more traffic.
You really think that they don't know about VAT? This stuff is mentioned everytime prices in Europe are mentioned and they 100% of time ignore it, because it gets people to read their stories and post comments. Only other explanation would be that they are toal idots, and on the basis of tehir success, it seem unlikely
lol, who fucked this one up.
500euros + local taxes.
Don't worry, Engadget will correct the article.
Oh, wait, no.
Point!
@ Rauha:
read this: "...handset heads to select markets in October for €500 (pre tax and pre carrier subsidy)."
http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/27/nokia-n900-running-maemo-5-officially-500-in-october/
It makes sense to quote Euro prices without VAT because VAT differs between 15% and 25% over the European Union. In most countries however the tax is around 20% so it makes sense to add the tax to calculate an estimated retail rice. To make matters worse, European law requires to quote prices with the VAT included as long as you are selling to end users.
US customers however are used to see the prices quoted without their local sales tax, so for the sake of comparability it would make sense to quote European prices without VAT as well. Some Europeans will be confused by this because they are used to the higher prices including VAT.
Isn't it a bit silly to mention prices without VAT? Because you can't actually buy stuff without paying it.
Engadget does not mention that taxes are included and that this is the UNSUBSIDIZED price. Geez engadget.
Phones aren't really subsidized. The price is just moved into the contract.
yes tim but the industry term for it is still subsidy
Looks Great !
Yeah, somehow the 20% tax never gets mentioned. And for a little perspective. Price of unlocked iPhone 3GS 32GB in Italy? 719 EUR...
@staska
You should consider yourself lucky. Price of unlocked iPhone 3GS 32GB in Croatia? 7599KN (about €1033)...
Price of an unlocked iPhone 3GS on ebay that will ship internationally: probably much less =)
The only thing I think this bad boy is missing is a compass... Other than that October can't get here soon enough.
+1!
I read somewhere that it does has a digital compass
Nokia always gives their prices without VAT's in their announcements.
Then in some markets like Finland they add extra 100-200€ just for fun.
Expect when you buy it from normal store like Verkkokauppa.com. Nokia's flagship store and online store is really overpriced.
I like that the phone being sold there is supporting the TMo US 1700 band.... :)
and..
Unterstützte Protokolle: Unterstützung für Mail for Exchange (MS Exchange), IMAP4, POP3, SMTP
Too expensive, but it's tempting. I'm sure shipping it to the US would be it's own wad of cash as well.
iPhone 3GS 32GB in Italy is €799
I thought iphone was for 99$, steve said so. :)
Here in India,iPhone 3G sells for $800......Dats why there are over 100 million nokia handsets in circulation in my country alone mostly smartphones for around 200-200$.god only knows how many were sold since the last ten years (500million maybe) and im talking about only one so called 3rd world country here.Apple brags about 30 million iPhones as if it is the world leader...I call BS and hope apple gets some sense and gets some good subsidies/contracts from Indian mobile providers ASAP.
-Angry iPhone user!
EVERY household in India has atleast one nokia handset... :)
-Happy motoming user :P
In Italy (i'm italian) the 3gs 32gb is 719€ in carriers stores, 699€ at the online Apple Store (excuse me for the dirty english.. :) )
