Leica to announce new cameras on September 9th, absolute best day to stand out in the headlines
We know Leica's target demographic is decidedly less consumer and more devoted professional photography, but even still, September 9th isn't exactly the most apt timing to maximize press coverage on a next generation camera lineup when your competition of the day will be Apple's annual iPod event and the release of Beatles Rock Band. Still, the urge to make announcements on 9-9-2009 at 9:00AM ET has gotta be too hard to pass up, and possibly not topped until 10:00AM on October 10th of next year. Video teaser after the break; no idea what we're expecting to see from Leica (M8 successor, perhaps?), but we can all but guarantee it won't be priced for mass consumption.

Expect the Leica M9
Yes, because the rumored camera's on the new iPods are in direct competition of Leica camera's.
Haha, yeah, just had the same thought.
Maybe Engadget should inform Obama, Medvedev, the UNO, the
(keyboard shortcut fail)
...Taliban, Al-Quaida, Iran, the economy in general and all other usually news-hogging things to keep it quiet next week, because nobody should be allowed to take away limelight from the holy words of Apple around the 9th....
just shows the nature of engadget. bunch of apple fanboys getting crazy when apple releases ipod touchy for the 3rd time and itunes for the 9th. nothing else gets into their little world.
And more than likely, they will be demonstrating its picture taking capabilities with pictures taken with canon, nikon, leica... all but not ipod. :)
Geez. You think they just might announce the M9?!?
give em a finger... huh josh..
Reminds me of the Dreamcast launch date - 9/9/99
The infamous day that doomed Sega
if there is a full frame m i know what my next purchase is going to be, excuse the french but fuck a d3 if i can get a fullframe digital m to compliment my beautiful m3 :D
Are Leica cameras any good? Do you get the quality you pay for? Not familiar with this brand.
leica cameras are the best
Their top of the line SLRs are to die for, but unfortunately VERY expensive. Add in a decent lens and you can easily blow $10k. Their point-and-shoot cameras are actually pretty good - they're built on the same guts as the panasonics, and panny usually releases the same model for less. I have a D-Lux-3 which is great, but I hear the D-Lux-4 is even better. The ability to shoot in RAW image mode and widescreen format (16:9) is a real bonus. It also does well in low light, has manual focus, and has a full dial selection (aperture priority, shutter priority etc. as found on SLRs). It's tough to find such features on regular P&S camera (i.e. canon elphs). The only real competitors are the Canon G9 and the Sigma DP range.
There's also a Slipknot 10th anniversary box set thing coming out on 9/9/9, as well as the Pixar movie "9." Lots of people jumping on that bandwagon.
Erm, "9" isn't Pixar. It's produced by Starz Animation and distributed by Focus.
My bad.
Given that it is a 3D feature film not about talking animals that 'do stuff' , I could see how one would think it is a Pixar film
Not all pro still photographers are excited about new iPods. But I guess if there is going to be a theme to such a date, it might as well be called "camera day".
You will see the new Leica S2 this much is clear ;-P
And yes yo ll get what u payed for ;-) They are (one of ) the Best!
But what is an iPod is that such an Fruite label owned trandy nice too have soundplaying device .... Who mid be intressted in such an TOY if Leica calls .....lol
Ooh, that means Panasonic should have something nice to follow. An LX4 and/or TZ8/ZS4? (For $xxx less per camera, for same hardware.)
Yum.
It's like the upside down day of evil 6/6/6 - 9/9/9
D-Lux 5 perhaps ?
Me thinks this is going to be the Leica version of the GF1.
http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/06/rumored-micro-four-thirds-panasonic-gf1-gets-pictured/
Methinks so, too... I'm guessing that the Leica version will cost 123456x more than the Lumix, but I'm sure the body will look 123456x cooler. ;-P I soooo cannot wait for the GF1. I wonder if it'll be rebranded as the D-Lux 5 or maybe Digilux 4?
He mentioned that the new products to be unveiled are for novices and professionals alike. Perhaps we will finally witness an affordable Leica rangefinder?
Nah, not going to happen.
perhaps they'll be launching the Leica-camera phone with app store.
they're all doing it, you know!
I'll wait until the limited edition Cartier-Bresson branded, diamond encrusted and PRODUCT-RED endorsed version is released. And even then I'll only bid at the charity auction for the unit with serial no. 9.
I'll take 9 shots so that the shutter counter reaches 9. Then, I'll get a custom-built argon gas, hermatically sealed cabinet built. I'll leave it in there and never open the cabinet ever again.
Can't wait. Some people say I have too much money.
If they release a micro 4/3rds, it will be epic.
