Ben Heck realigns Xbox 360 pad for improved awesomeness
If you've spent any time on Engadget before, you'll be aware that we're big fans of Ben Heck and his tireless modding, tweaking and hacking (or is it Hecking?) of console hardware. The latest feather to his cap comes in the form of a customized Xbox 360 controller, which sees its D-pad and action buttons swapping places in an effort to help a handicapped gamer get his proverbial groove on. The trigger buttons are also flipped, but the pièce de résistance is the inclusion of four extra action buttons along the bottom of the controller that make one-handed gaming totally feasible. Check 'em out after the break.

The sound of one hand clapping.
tree falling in the woods tree falling in the woods... whooooooooooooooa
More like the sound of one hand fapping.
One handed gaming...for DOA Beach Volleyball...anyone anyone?
Just looking at this thing is going to screw up my COD game tonight.
One handed gamers can't strafe in shooters, then?
Maybe he can work up some kind of foot control to account for that.

One handed gamers can't strafe in shooters, then?
- I guess they'd have to practice really damn hard. The inclusion of some sort of foot trigger/duck mechanic could help I'm sure...
Wait a second, people play shooters with these silly controllers?
@spiza ..the article states that it was made for a handicapped gamer. Some people can't use both of their hands or even have both of their hands. This controller is not made for you, clearly.
that is so sick.
I got his book. Lots of great tips if you're into this kind of thing.
@FNG
best reply ever =D

lamest post ever...
Either that, or let Ben Heck mod the handicapped gamer into an awesomebot!
that's his next project!
Now if he would just align the analog sticks, I could play Katamari on the 360 without going sideways all the time.
na naaaa na na na na na na na na na na na na naaaaa
We are moved to tears by the size of this thing. - King of all Cosmos
You sure he isn't talking about the original Xbox controller?
@grammar
my thoughts exactly.
Now if could only help MS mod the 360 to last more then a week ;)
(you know, if anyone could...)
Beck Heck is a real american hero. Unlike the ones in that crappy movie last month.
Those Bastards!
What the heck? Another Ben Heck mod? Get the heck outta here. Who the heck doesn't love Ben Heck? ... Heck.
Was gonna vote you down as I started to read your post. But I made it to the end and completely reversed my decision. Heck, I'd vote twice if I could.
With the buttons along the left underside - what if you have only control of your right hand?
then when you placed your order with Ben, you would not have told him to design a controller for your left hand.
You go all christie brown on it and work that left foot!
You send Ben Heck an email and politely inquire about a mirrored version of this.
all he had to do was but an SNES d-pad in place of that awful mess that's usually in the lower left section of an xbox controller and i would buy one.
put*
I know what you mean, I used my friends xbox controller ad it was physically impossible to navigate the dashboard with that pathetic excuse for a dpad.
Being a one-handed gamer (I have only a thumb left on my right hand after an accident) I think stuff like this is pretty cool. And good thing we amputees have a good sense of humor or I might of had to hurt some of you. ;)
You should just play a lot of N64. You almost never use anything besides your thumb when it comes to your right hand on that baby. You don't even need the "aim" button in Goldeneye. And screw the "Mario cam" in Mario 64.
egh, that thing is horrid looking and huge. I think it's even bigger than the stock Microsoft controller which is already huge.
I never got about the XBOX controller is the offset analog controllers, it just doesn't feel natural in my hand.
There is no way that isn't the body of a stock controller. Why on earth would he have a bigger controller fabricated?
Also note the raised corners of the d-pad area, those are the remains of the raised ring around the letter buttons, and there would be no need to put them on a controller if he DID have one fabricated.
You seriously think that isn't a stock control shell? Really, you don't read any of the articles on his work do you? Its a normal shell modified.
This be good for games like Idol Master.
hey dude
if you don't want an xbox, dont buy one. we don't need your "breaking news" on xbox fail rates.
Not to hate on the mighty Ben, but those extra buttons are just nasty little studs. Seems kind of amateurish and potentially painful..I know BH can do far better.
Dear Mr. Heck,
Could you realign my face for improved awesomeness? Thanks in advance!
im disabled emailed ben many times only to be ignored wish he would reply
Next, Ben mods new arms to one-armed people!
Is that a Sony D-pad I see?
That's definitely a Dualshock D-Pad
Definitely an upgrade there!
Nice mod Ben, congrats. Buttons on the back look rough, but I'm sure they are fine. Ben is one helluva guy, someday we'll read about him being the CEO of some big enterprise, and look back on his accomplishments.
Get back under your bridge, troll.
