Video: crooks clean out New Jersey Apple store in 31 impressive seconds
And you thought making off with 39 iPods in 15 seconds was something to behold. After studying said crooks in Utah, a trained team of larcenists headed over to Apple's Sagemore location in Marlton, New Jersey in order to one-up the duo by snagging even more goods in under a minute. As the surveillance shows, a single blunt object decimated the iconic glass doorway and enabled five hyped-up thieves to enter, snag 23 MacBook Pros, 14 iPhones and 9 iPod touches, and head for the hills -- all in just 31 seconds. Look, we aren't trying to glamorize crime or anything, but this is the stuff GTA heists are made of. Head on past the break for a look at the video, and please, don't try to replicate this at your nearest Apple store (without wearing a head-mounted camcorder and hooking us up with the footage, of course).

Lolz.
Apple is just going to wirelessly locate all the iphone's and then shut them down. They will all be worthless on the street. These guys are dumb. "Let's steal something with a GPS0tracking system and a new advertised feature that will help them catch us" . When will they ever learn.....
@sacapuntas I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Apple probably can't track those iPhones because MobileMe isn't activated on the in store demo phones. And even if it is, it's trivially easy to insure that the phone can't be tracked; http://news.cnet.com/8301-17939_109-10270273-2.html
They're not planing on using the phones, they're planning on selling them.
and all that security only works on activated devices, which these probably weren't
Yes...white people... *goes off to finish watching leverage season 2*
i dont think they stole these to make money off it.
this whole thing looks like it was entirely for thrill and kudos
or maybe they just hate apple
I just wanna know are all American news stories so dramatized and dumbed down for the masses?
"scooped up merchandise like a holiday shopping spree"
"the spectacular smash and grab. The scene, Apple computer store."
"like pros they bring it shattering down with one strike"
"precision timing"
"skilled practice"
Jesus christ they threw something through a window and ran around picking up computers.
Why the hell didn't they have them secured by Kensington locks?
^ That's what I was wondering. How did they cut through the lock cables so quickly?
Giroro.. as I learned tonight because I had to call AMEX to get approval.. all of the iPhones in the store are activated. I asked they guy if they care if people make calls on them and he said not at all!
@Adderz... unfortunately yes. Every news story is overly dramatic no matter how trivial the topic. It's ridiculous.
Well that's good ole' "Action News" 6. Haven't seen that since like the early '90s and it's exactly the same. Growing up on that made Anchorman actually funny for me.
/South Jersey FTL!!
MobileMe activation doesnt matter. If they have the phones IMEI numbers they can disable the phones. Not sure if iPhones have a IMEI crack yet, but if not, it's easy to brick them.
You stay classy San Diego
Guys! Are you Stupid????
All this stuff soon will be on sale on eBay - and for foreign countries.
So they sell all to other countries - where Mobileme or other stupid stuff doesn't work!
Pablot... They are not secured with lock because they would ruin the Feng Sui of the store.
The real shocker isn't the burglary, it's how American news is dramatized and created as entertainment.
That was one fast raid, But I don't think it will be the last.
Apple doesn't use the Kensington locks in the stores. They instead have each computer connected to an ethernet-esque cable that when unplugged sounds a (very loud) alarm. It certainly works while people are in the store since they have to come over, plug it in, and use a key to disarm it (I've set them off a few times, it can be really touchy if you pick up the computer). The iPods are just secured to the tables with a cable that is attached to the back of the iPods/iPhones with what is pretty much extra sticky 3M double sided tape.
Where was Paul A. Chapel?
@Newone
"If they have the phones IMEI numbers they can disable the phones"
Um, no! There needs to be an EIR in place for that to happen and as far as I know there are NONE in North America... The Operators on this side of the pond need to get of there asses and make it happen or this type of crime will increase...
So this is how Engadget gets stuff for the giveaways...
Do I predict the next back to school giveaway include a macbook pro, ipod, and iphone?
Bet Apple wish they'd never invented MagSafe...
Wow... Imagine that. Robbing a store and getting away with nothing of value.
But the goods have monetary worth anyway, though you might think that apple is crap.
LAWL LAWL LAWL LOL HAHAHA
OMFG THATS FUNNY. DO YOU GUYS GET IT? HE IS SAYING THAT APPLE COMPUTERS DONT WORTH ANYTHING SO TEH THEIVES ARE STUPID!
imagine their surprise when they find out no one on ebay would want to buy those apple pieces of crap for anything more than a few dollars. i mean its not like apple holds 90% of the market share for computers over a 1000 dollars or anything. oh wait.
@mills
I would have to agree, I'm sure they could sell those thing fast behind a starbucks or some college campus in mins.
Not like this will be one block in apple's janga tower that will make it fall over.
@Mills
jeez man. it's just joke. kinda like your's but better
The mac pros probably all have snow leopard installed on them, anyone buying them will probably want to throw it in the trash after messing with that bugfest. Apple say hello your version of Vista.
Yeah, imagine their surprise to find out Apple doesn't have really anything close to 90% of market share.
Research, my friend. Try it.
@zen
... are you... you did see mills said that after his caps long spew?
@ zen
Research my friend, try it.
http://www.betanews.com/joewilcox/article/Apple-has-91-of-market-for-1000-PCs-says-NPD/1248313624
It could mean they're better, it could me they're just over-priced and have good marketing...whatever.
@Tony
Excluding on-line sales and corporate purchases. It's not 91% overall although the percentage will be high given the ASP of Macs compared to Windows OEMs.
@PG
I'm extraordinarily elated to see a PC with zero experience using Snow Leopard is willing to come forward and tell us all about the completely true 'bugs' in 10.6.
/Sarcasm
You have no idea what you're talking about, so please crawl into a hole (may I suggest the YouTube comment section?) and perish.
They should have waited for the new camera iPod touches coming next week at the very least.
sure it is of value. You can sell even stolen macs. Yes Apple know the serial numbers of the machines but guess what? You can't really track a machine through a serial number. If one day a lucky buyer brings a computer in an apple store they might be lucky enough to catch a thief or two. Although I highly doubt that. Anyway, Apple Stores are insured and Apple lost nothing.
@Zen, do these theives look like they give a fuck about Market Share or Fanboyism?
@Argot
Macs have the best resell value among all computer brands in the market.
Maybe they should have stolen Dells? Yeah, that's how you make the big bucks
/sarcasm
I love this comment! You rock man, nothing of value so sad but so true!
They probally robbed them since theoretically they are worth about 2-600 dollars for the laptops and they were so outraged that they cost 2000! Theres my motivation! :) So by stealing them they reduce them to street value.
As always you stay classy san diego, I'm Ron Burgundy?
Who put a question mark on the teleprompter?
HAHAHAHAHAHA, Its fun right ?
awesome totally awesome
...until your house gets broken into tonight by the same robbers.
Or they knock off a store where the security guard isn't busy tacking a crap and they end up hurting or killing someone. The longer criminals are at it, the higher the chance of escalation.
I dont want to imagine someone tacking a shit... that would be so messy.
Seriously, maybe one of those stuffed animal slings for it but a tack?
Those criminals sure are savvy.
*nods head* Indeed.
LOL "criminal Pros"........... one was wearing a red sweater the other 2 a black and they call them pros...
It's called bum rush, more people you have the greater chances of pulling it off, like gone in 31 second style. Lol.
nah.. it's just a journalist who is dumb..
that is a whole lot of overpriced merchandise.. you can see why they prefer to rob the apple store as opposed to the Microsoft stores. lol
23 macbook pros at appoximately 1600 each.. is over 36,000 dollars :o
microsoft stores are not even open yet
Microsoft stores are everywhere. Go look for a laptop or desktop computer. Found a store? Any store. That's a Microsoft store. Unless it's Apple. Then it's an Apple store.
Of course, you can buy Apple products at non-apple stores too - though I don't remember it always being like that, whereas with Microsoft you can buy it with any retailer.
Jeez... how did they NOT damage the laptops in the process of ripping them off of the tables- oh... don't the macbook pro's have the magnetic charging jack?
I believe the plugs are straight, not angled like alot of laptops (my plug is angled) which would enable, if oriented right, for it to be just taken off the table and running off, the connector would just pop out as if it was a piece of paper held by an old fasion clothes line clip.
they're all magnetic connectors now. it would be very easy to run off with them and not cause any damage.
See now, if it was the normal design, they would have taken longer to prevent damaging the laptops...
Selling: MacBook Pro. Brand new. Slight scratches. No power adapter.
Hmmm... somehow, I don't think these are really worth very much. Then again, they're not going to get caught either.
I feel sorry for the security guard... total loss of face right there...
Aren't things in Apple Stores usually wired down some how?
my exact thoughts
Yeah... don't they have those security cables attached to them that if they are removed an alarm goes off?
Oh yeah... the REAL security alarm started blasting when the glass door was smashed!
That you ruin the lines of the laptop and defeat the purpose of having an apple
Hahahahahahahaahhaha Jersey.
lol i love how the security guard looks completely out of breath running back into the store.
Have you ever seen a security guard that was in good shape?
He wouldn't have that problem if he were on a Segway...
actually i was a a security guard for a casino and im in great shape, however their are others who arent and yes, they did ride segways lol
Am I the only one that foresee's a very bad streak of copycat crimes coming after this?
lets just hope they stick to apple stores.
It would be just awful if they broke into those fancy Microsoft stores and stole all those copies of Windows 7. Whatever would piratebay do to recoup from such a feat?
Let me repeat something similar to what I heard earlier, but not really sure where:
LAWL LAWL LAWL LOL HAHAHA
OMFG THATS FUNNY. DO YOU GUYS GET IT? HE IS SAYING THAT MICROSOFT SOFTWARE DONT WORTH ANYTHING SO TEH THEIVES ARE STUPID!
No kidding! The video showed criminal wannabes, just how to do it.
dont they all phone home?
Apple put a store in New Jersey? FTW? LOL - since no one was hurt.
holy crap.
that's impressive.
That's what happens when Microsoft fanboys take things a little too far.
nah..microsoft fanboys would have just set the place on fire and laughed while they watched it burn
As long as no one was hurt. All that matters to me. unlike that one were the lady got shot.
The announcer needs to chill a bit, its a snatch and brag not oceans 11.
Sensationalist crime reporting ftw!
The socialist in me likes it when big companies get robbed up.
Microsoft gets robbed every day through pirate software, but that's nowhere on ACTION NEWS.
lol i get the same feeling
That is actually fucking genius.
I don't want any Apple gear, but I am _impressed_
Are you American? Did you go to public high school? Your standards shouldn't be so low.
Both, yes... and that is actually true, about low standards.
On the other hand, I'm a little curious about how the Apple store there was set up.
Nearly everything in ours is really locked on. There are no wood surfaces, only (what appears to be) polished metal and black stands.
These punks just made Steve Jobs' Shit List.....Yes, Steve Jobs has a shit list...News tomorrow at 11...apple bandits found iCastrated and iParalyzed.......
lmao!
Or he can just hit his red button to make those iPhones just explode right into them thugz.
I dunno if the guard may have been on the heist though. Lulz
He doesnt need a button, just leave it to the battery...
I thought the explosives were only active in France.
Those laptops aren't locked down at all? I haven't been to an apple store in a while. Apple was pretty much asking for it if they didn't have their computers locked up and had nothing but glass to protect their store.
Apple computers have Kensington lock ports? I thought they were too cool for that.
hey now...
their product don't thousands of virus they know how to keep people out.
sorry that was bad.
but bars would harsh their style.
Now, watch the crooks try to fetch damaged Macbooks and Pros on Ebay or worse, Craigslist. Who knows, they may get "smart" and come back to the Genius Bar to repair the damaged side ports. After all, they're still under warranty.
what damaged ports?
mac notebooks use magsafe charging port if you trip on them they unplug so it does if you janked them like in the robbery. so apple made easy to steal computers :P
"Lifting net book pros that can run up to three grand" - That made me lol
The Reporter might as well be awarding these guys a medal for their heroic robbery.
Thanks for reminding me why I don't watch TV anymore
Hmmm... Should I maybe worried that I just picked up this Macbook Pro from 5 unsavory gentlemen in a back alley earlier for only $500?
Nahhh!
at least you have that fancy apple store menu right on your desktop so you can schedule an appointment at the genius bar anytime you like.
Next time, save the thieves a trip and put the Apple store in downtown Camden....
Stupid.
If I were the thieves, I would steal the software boxes, not the hardware displays. Those display units can be easily tracked, and probably have a restricted installation of OS X anyway. The moment it goes online to get software updates, Apple will know. Same thing with the iPods. The moment they are connected to iTunes, iTunes will check with the mothership for firmware updates.
It's easier to sell those MS Office/Snow Leopard boxes.
Or a $1200 copy of Final Cut Studio.
It's like the game show Supermarket Sweep... they always ran to those expensive turkeys and hams... $40 a pop.
