Nokia Booklet 3G gets its very own promo video
You know what would be nice? If Nokia's Booklet 3G actually made us feel as uplifted and inspired as the music in this fancy new promo video does. And why is it shown running Windows 7 Media Center, which will likely tax the 1.6GHz Atom Z530 and presumably integrated graphics beyond usability, but there aren't any shots of the Ovi apps in action? Aren't they the reason we're supposed to get all excited about paying a huge markup for this thing? And -- will using it make our hands look like that? We found only questions in the video beyond the break, but we're sure some of you have answers.

No ion, no deal.
It would also help if it had something other than a low-end Atom processor (that sounds redundant). What is that HDMI port for?
I really don't think that Nokia is trying to fulfill your HD playback needs. That is not what this laptop is about.
It's about catering to the audience that enjoys mobility and a wide array of features, packed in an all-aluminum sturdy casing.
Especially the 12h-battery+3G+GPS functionality is something nobody else can offer at this pricepoint. $570. (Since as we now, Euro always translates at a 1:1 USD ratio when launched in the US)
whats up with the mouse pad? the guy slided like 6 times and moved the mouse one inch on the screen
blue laptop. blue nails. blue hair?
*cough* netbook *cough* *cough*
Netbook = Cheapbook = Cheapparts = Cheapexperience = Cheapreturn. ;) ;) ;)
It is good to know that a netbook is offered in the same colors as the old GBA's were.
dem hands
I bet it's a tranny!
I have but one question:
WHY?
To upstage Apple releasing a similarly spec'd notebook with the same build quality but fewer features and costing more probably.
Well probably not but I'm guessing such a device would get a considerably more favourable reception here.
somehow you can look up all the posts about nokia on engadget, and you'll find not a single one without some sort of sarcasm. not a fanboy, but really, you'd think for a company that is the biggest mobile phone maker in the world, they must be doing SOMETHING right
"you'd think for a company that is the biggest mobile phone maker in the world, they must be doing SOMETHING right."
China.
Just because you make the most phones doesn't mean you're doing it right. Look at the top selling phones and you won't find a Nokia in the bunch. Sure, they make some nice phones but most are overpriced, underpowered, and simply not for sale here in the good old US of A.

"Just because you make the most phones doesn't mean you're doing it right. Look at the top selling phones and you won't find a Nokia in the bunch."
Do you mean worldwide, or in the U.S.? Because worldwide you will most definitely find a bunch of Nokias in the ranking.
@cj100570: I guess you have never seen the sale numbers for mobiles in Europe?
Sure, they're doing some things right. But this video ain't one of them.
Not only that, Engadget seems to mask some good news about Nokia, where they can't do any sarcasm.
for example, they didn't post any news about Nokia releasing its Ovi SDK today at Nokia world. They are mentioning
about new feature of Android market, but masked the news about Ovi SDK release for developers.
That doesn't mean that news are not available elsewhere, but that shows the "cruel intentions" of engadget.
Nokia is like the Walmart of retail. They sell cheap stuff but a ton of it.
and the whole "I've got the largest market share in the smartphone market", well that may be true, but I bet half the people who have these smartphones wouldn't even consider it a smartphone because all they use it for is calling, sms and photos.
"Huge markup" ???
EUR = USD in gadgets, so 575EUR = 575USD.
For 575USD you get 16(!!) cell battery, GPS, 3G, accelerometer, 1-piece aluminum casing, great design (subjective), HDMI, 720p display, fanless cooling solution.
Do your frickin math. Engadget blindly hates Nokia. So nothing new here.
You've lost my trust as bloggers. Not to mention as journalists.
@cj100570
Check out the rankings here on GSMArena, it like the IMDB for Mobiles.
http://www.gsmarena.com/stats.php3
Lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of Nokia's there. I know you'd straight away question the rankings but that would mean "The Shawshank Redemption" is not a very good movie for you as reflected on the IMDB Top 250.
Well, Nilay, you have no problem in paying a huge mark up for a Mac so what's the difference here?
@ hary536:
yeah i noticed that too. now as much as i'm inclined to believe there's no evil reason on the writers' minds, it annoys me sometimes how i never hear about anything nokia and good on engadget
God you American are 'tards.
You know you are the second largest economic market in the world, soon to be third which means that as a dwindling world economic power your opinions about anything are really irrelevant as companies will focus their design and development efforts to those regions where the money is.
Down vote me if you must, but consider this your reality check.
Ice is not a color, but I felt it running through my veins. hands=creep central. When will computers start being computers again?
It's NOKIA;) lol
"Aren't they why we're supposed to get all excited about paying..."
Might want to consider revising that, Nilay.
Couldn't they have shown the machine doing SOMETHING?
too much dough for too little spec, no deal.
I tought the reason we should be excited about this is the fact that you can slide your simcard in it. But what's fun about that? Can't I connect with my new N900?
Engadget on the Nokia shame campaign again. I think the specs can handle Windows Media Center.
Oh yeah, sexy fingers. WTF Nokia - show me the laptop not some hands.
That was a noob advertising move. The flashy nails takes away attention from the product.
I guess, Nilay Patel, tamare Nokia conversations join karvu joia. Tamara badha questions na answers tamne tya mali sake chhe.
Btw, this is just a small video, there will be more to come, which i am sure, will show different plus points of the netbook.
They aren't trying to show all the things in one ad, which is good. But again, considering Nokia's weak marketing history, i would not
be surprised, if they mess up the marketing, even though the product might be better than portrayed in their marketing ads.
I love how the video makes it look like it's ground breaking stuff.
easy access to SD cards and SIM cards? really nokia??
I reckon they should have created/used some different OS on that device than windows vista
What other laptop for 570usd (read: Euro translates directly to USD in US market) offers the following:
- 12 hour battery life
- Built-in GPS
- Built-in 3G
- Aluminum chassis
The Atom Z CPU and Poulsbo chipset, which makes the fanless design possible, is a big differentiator too. The only netbook that I know of using the same CPU and chipset is the Dell Mini10. Add GPS, 3G, etc, to the Mini10 and it will cost around 600$* (or 600euros). So the introductory price of the Booklet 3G is far from being unreasonable.
* For that price, the Mini10 would have a slightly better hard drive and screen resolution but has only 6-cell battery, no aluminium case and no accelerometer.
That is a pair of male hands with blue nail color. Creepy~~~
Engadget's Nokia bashing has finally taken its toll on me.
I used to read this site for it's great journalism and (sometimes) funny articles.
I think I'll be removing it from my favourites bar now.
I'm pretty sure the music in the background is used by either the BBC or Al Jazeera English for their news stations
Yep, BBC
Engadget, why the hate?
Engadget seriously needs some fresh unbiased, non fanboysih talent write blog posts.
Dear Engadget,
I hate your comment system.
Yours Sincerely,
The internet
hey now, lets not put words in my mouth.
I find it very interesting how the common theme in the comments section of this websites articles is "engadget bashing"...all I see is the same names all the time complaining about how "engadget journalist are biased" and "I used to like this site but I'm never coming back". Well... if you mean what you post, the jump off the engadget bashing bandwagon and move on to another tech blog and moan and groan there...
Now to the topic at hand, I personally believe this Noikia netbook is just more of the same. Same ol' cookie cutter specs as all the rest. The only real thing that can make one brand's netbook stand out next to another is design pretty much...
Check the 3G and GPS -- it's not exclusive, but it differentiates this from 90% or more of the netbooks.
