Video: Nokia N900 used to control British art installation
The new Nokia N900 is only a week old, but it's already being put to some interesting uses -- like this nifty little video wall commissioned by Nokia at the onedotzero adventures in motion festival in London. A custom Maemo 5 app sends messages to the display, and then the phone's accelerometer can be used to control the animation. Sure, it's not the most super-original phone+art installation we've ever seen, but it's certainly quite pretty -- check the video after the break.

but man i cannot wait to preorder this phone
What are you waiting for? Pre orders are open now!
And its so cheap in the US. $600 i.e. £365 ? what ?. Here in UK its £499 ! - but I am still buying
My N810 will do for now.
so brits get ripped off?
HUGE surprise!
I am just don't have the money yet,
as far as brits getting ripped off your get all the best phones anyway why you complaining?
Agreed.
GUYS...since my contract is ending and I'm shopping in a world of "imperfect" phones for me, I think I finally found the perfect replacement for my crappy tilt. I'm ecstatic.
No Nokia insults Engadget? Huh......
Guess Nokia have responded in the best way they could. Action not words.
iPhone could do it in 2007...
Puerile is as puerile does.
but it didn't, ya see? that's the difference.
Gee, how can you not see the irony. I simply wanted to beat some genius to the punch...
Ok Bruno, you win.
But your comment is atypical of iPhone fanboys - they're everywhere :) . Why do they feel so threatened by other smartphones ? If anything N900 will make for a better cheaper iPhone and everybody is a winner. This fanboyism thing borders on the cultism and is so played out.
WTF are you talking about nub?
iPHONE COULD DO THIS IN 2005 when it was still in pre-design stage!!!
AHAHAHA
Nokia is shit like HONDA..
@Bruno
Nokia N95 could do it way before iPhone.
And N95 in 2006, but it didnt either.
Jesus look at how smooth that OS is. DO WANT.
Yes for a change it seems really speedy
It IS Linux, but can it run SuperTux?
What about TuxRacer?
can your SuperTux running computer fit in your pocket?
Yes it can :-)

is the nokia n900 the one with the capacitave screen? if not, which is?
That's the x6
thanks
S60 5th Edition Symbian OS version 9.4 on the X6 and, get this, RealPlayer... You can capacitive touch it all you like, but it wont go away. Id rather have this, (running linux), so I can do right where nokia does wrong.
WHY so serious?
i am either buying this or an itablet if they ever actually come out with one. but i am leaning Way more towards this.
So the OS is linux? Does it use normal linux apps? what about S60 apps? Is it a phone?
Have you been living under a rock? Are you illiterate? Are you incapable of doing a google search?
it runs the maemo desktop on linux which is now QT based since version 5 previous versions were GTK/Hildeon
you can get an idea of what apps it will have from maemo.org
The n900 can also run debian app if I understand correctly since maemo is built on top of the debian distribution
That might not be all 100% right since I don't own a nokia but that is roughly it
Maemo can run Linux apps for the most part, yes. Some have been ported over and some work natively. I know people have installed OpenOffice.org on Maemo before. It's pretty badass.
Who controls it now????
The N900 runs Maemo 5 which is GTK base not QT (which is planned for Maemo 6). It is using a resistive screen but seems pretty responsive for running not final software. People using Maemo 4 was able to get OpenOffice(but slow) to run on slower hardware. From the video that is out currently there already seems to be some bitorrent client. The N900 using Nokia's BL-5J battery at 1320 mAh but the BL-5J can be found cheaply (around $10 ebay, etc.) and is user swappable. Maemo 5, like the Maemo before it also supports software keyboard on the screen along with it hardware keyboard. The N900 does not have a digital compass. The browser is not WebKit base but Mozilla base with full Flash 9.4. Will have native support for a bunch of codec so no need to do video conversions. Uses standard mini-usb for charging and data transfers. So far this phone is looking pretty good for me and I would pre-order it but I was burnt so badly by my HTC Tilt that I think I'll wait till a little while after release.
yo I may be so drunk right now but Nokia finally rocked it. Yes yes yes man
finally a phone that can super multitask. Unlike this girl that I SO had tonight. Had her before, not tonight. sucks. Yes it does. Yes yes no no yes no yes no ytts. Why Tee Tee Es!!! What does that even mean? You got me. Yes you do
Literally, all this phone is missing is a capacitive touch screen. Otherwise I would love it and marry it. Oh my lord yes. So many features. And OVI work in US as well as it does in Europe/UK?
Otherwise Maemo and WebOS are both multi task but Maemo is way more in depth. If that screen is responsive than hell yeah. The n97 sucked. But this thing looks amazing. T-mobile? Or At&T?
I haven't looked up which band it will run on. I think T-mobile for some reason, though. Even if their 3G sucks I'm on a campus with wifi so ok.
I apologize in advance for this post. It was a long night. And YES I visited engadget. you'll see me some day. AP
thanks for posting Nilay Patel :)
its Linux so yes the customise ablities of this phone are going to lots better then osx, symbian, brew etc,i am very looking forward to this phone ,it looks like the first real pc phone that is not s gimic and not as expensive as a uber pc
thank god... finally a nokia phone i'd consider buying ... you had me worried there for a while with you s60 shenanigans ...
welcome back to the table ..
I'm wondering how long it will take before they make a capacitive version. I really like the phone as it is, but if they make a capacitive version in a few months I would feel pretty left out. Damn, they're so close to the perfect phone, if only they would have done this last thingy too.
Capacitive screens also have their own issues ie in cold weather they dont work, also one cant use capacitive with gloves on and to add fuel to the fire, some dialects need manual input so capacitive is useless. My personal favorite as to why capacitive sux, well when you have a full blown OS you may want to run an image editor, ever tried doing that with you finger, its a bit like painting a picture with your elbow.
Richard, are you stupid? The guy posted that he wants a capacitive screen. I'm sure he's aware of the pseudo-disadvantages of capacitive screens that you've listed. Why're you trying to change his mind?
It seems to me like you're just another user of resistive screens who is in denial.
@iloveapple
Pseudo disadvantages?
No those are real disadvantages, but thanks for playing!
Your bloody half deformed clitoris? That's a pseudo-penis. I find that most Apple trolls are usually people trying to compensate for a lack of something, and they can't afford a sports car so they buy a trendy phone, and make sure at every store, restaurant, and public place, people can see they have an I-phone!
I guess there are enough of these idiots out there (i-diots if you will) that feed into each other's illusion, that iloveapple feels the people in this thread will buy into his assertion that the capacitive screen (and by extension the i-phone, who are you trying to kid?) has no disadvantages.
One is an entry level smartphone with formidable media features, fingers are fine, the other is a mobile productivity device, and media capabilities that are currently unmatched if it supports linux codec packs, using an OS that can use desktop Apps, for that you need the precise abilities of a stylus, ect. I couldn't imagine doing remote desktop with my fingers...
Don't even get a mention for tipping you guys on news anymore
greatest invention since ifone
This phone is perfect, and since it has user swappable batteries (which you can find cheap) it definitely has all day computing power. I don't need to type out an accounting statement, but it still rocks the box that you can view office files and manipulate them. Part of me wishes it used a faster processor (Snapdragon or a tegra base, Nvidia rocks), but this current setup has proven capable on the 3GS for just about everything, since I couldn't care less about 1080P on a phone, however, Nokia's TV out = Win for randomly showing a video on a waiting room TV for people to watch. Not having to convert to some BS codec is also a great feature.. who here is sick of reconverting their entire library to some other random ass proprietary codec?
If they get VLC running on this thing I will trade nekkid pix of my girlfriend from her experimenting days in college for one of these for each of us with ATT HSDPA!
Although part of me wants a touch higher resolution, 800x480 doesn't suck, I know since it's 16:9 can't do 800x600, but still, would be nice to have a bit more space.. but everything in steps. This thing blows my Iphone and 5800 out of the water. I'm glad to see someone finally having the nuts to get away from the "super slim at any costs" phone. Some of us want something big enough to actually use the screen, this thing is near perfect size.
You can officially call me an n900 nutswinger, I'm swinging on it's sack like Tarzan through the jungle.
can anyone explain how this thing works.. the onedotzero thing
