Zoom Q3 ears-on: it's like 'Stop Making Sense' saw your YouTube lip sync video and liked it
What's this blue monstrosity? A YouTube-happy concert bootlegger's new best friend. The Zoom Q3 (which is distributed by Samson in the States) pairs a decent stereo mic and some in-depth audio controls with a regular crappy pocket video camera sensor -- along with an oversized screen to make room for audio level meters. There are obviously limited situations where this is really necessary (there are plenty of much better dedicated mics for when you don't need the VGA video to go along with it), and all your cutesy Flip mino-toting friends are going to laugh at you, but at least you'll be able to crank up your recording to lossless and capture their cackles with eardrum shattering clarity. Check out a video of the Zoom Q3 shot with another Zoom Q3 after the break and decide for yourself if it's worth the slightly premium $249 pricetag.

Uh... so I'm going to waste 250 dollars for something I can get for less than 40 dollars at my local electronics store just because it's a bit smaller?
wait, what? show me the less-than-40 dollar product that can do all this thing can
Could have been smaller. I always just take the Sony audio recorder with me to concerts, 40 bucks, and I got a perfect bootleg :)
nothing less than a "PERFECT" bootleg uh?
Maybe what you need is not a digital recorder but a good Ortophon hearing aid.
haha, good one :)
Not that great
Your icon is so douchy
lolz
your comment is so smart bastard. you can only envy
Just get yourself a Zi8 and a nice mic to boot. This seems kinda pointless, unless you HAVE to edit your audio on the go.
This not only looks like an awesome gadget... it's pretty badass
I don't think the Zi8 is able to adjust audio levels.
This is basically a stereo mic FIRST and (happens) to capture video.
If you look it at that way it's not bad.
Still kinda expensive in my humble opinion....
Well, sure, I'd tool love to see a better price point, but the MAIN feature of this unit is that it's in one.. no need for a separate audio recorder (H4N, Edirol, what have you).. it does fill the need for the gigging musician (like me) who wants to get some decent audio without a bunch of separate items that I'll mostly likely forget (from drinking.)
Really lacks HD video recording. I think because of that it is in a really awkward place.
I don't see myself ever wanting to use that thing.
Why not just buy a Panasonic ZS3 (TZ7 in UK) with 720P video + Dolby Stereo recording - and a damned fine 10MP still camera to boot, for around the same price as this thing?
I had the same thought, but it is theoretically possible this has very good mics and opamps and such.
I\d need some expert analysis to believe it though.
I have a Zoom H2 and the recording quality is excellent!
me too. been using it to record rock concerts for a year and a half now, and i love my H2.
and for the record, the Q3 has the same audio capabilities of the H2.

this device makes me want to run run run run run run awaaaaaaaaaaay
Pick up that can. *bzzzt*
Oh...it's not a stun baton, some sort of recorder. Nevermind, pass.
Just ignore the video. This has a much better display than the Zoom H2 or H4. For that reason alone its pretty interesting.
expensive, but for the audio, seems worth it for those who care.
Too much "Talking Heads"?
Hmmm, perfect for bootlegging?
Not with the limiter they employ, just listen @ ±30 seconds.
It takes forever to get back to a decent level.
You can turn off the limiter (at least you can on the H3), you just have to be sure you set the levels right in the first place, or be willing to deal with the resulting distortion.
