If you're looking for some ultra-light laptop love in your life, Dell today debuted its 14-inch and 15.6-inch
Insprion Z series portables. Both models have more or less the same specs, meaning up to a 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SU9400 with GMA X4500HD graphics, 1366 x 768 resolution, 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 802.11a/b/g/draft-N, Bluetooth, a 7-in-1 card reader, 1.3 megapixel camera, and a 6-cell battery. Starting prices for the pair go as low as $599, but if you're looking to load up on as much as possible from the get-go, expect to pay somewhere in the vicinity of $1,034.

Ew @ the Intel graphics. Those new ASUS ones look better.
Intel graphics. Count this potential buyer out.
on these you can get this 512MB2 ATI Mobility RadeonTM HD4330 Graphics on it too, you pay more
@Grammar Delinquent: I can see that in the tech specs but when you actually go to customization there doesn't seem to be an option anywhere.
Yeah, that is not an option.
This is awesome!!! But I need to know, is GMA getting better for gaming? And how is the X4500HD when it comes to games like Half-Life 2 (or higher up, Call of Duty Waw, if you will)?
well most modern laptops can run 5 year old games pretty well.
I think one of the first commenters summed it up nicely 'eww@Intel GMA'
That hols a lot of truth when it comes to cames, but if your not looking to game (but it sounds like you are) you should be ok with it for normal stuff.
Otherwise look out for a laptop with ATI or Nvidia DEDICATED chips.
On a side note, for gaming i'd always recomend a desktop (as its far cheaper and easier to pick parts, not to mention upgradable)
Hope i've helped
Well what about newer games: How do they fare with the X4500HD?
I'd assume the X4500HD is better than the older X3100, which my dad has in his laptop. It plays source engine games (Left 4 Dead, Half Life 2, etc). It doesn't play much else, and defiantly not COD: WaW. Just get something with a dedicated video chip. You'll be much happier, more games will play and it won't steal your video memory. The only thing Intel GMA has going for it is that it has longer battery life than dedicated chips, but not by much now a days.
You do know this laptop meant to be more of ultra portable not a desktop replacement it meant for longer bat life and basic computer needs and so on
in other word not for gaming
and i really hate how every laptop all of sudden need to be able to run high end games
in my opinion if your a gamer u shouldn't be using a laptop any how as laptop aren't design for gaming in first place intel x45hd chips r really good for every thing other then gaming
i have dell Inspiron 15 with onbord intel x45hd graphic and haven't had an issuie 1 and still can run some games all though it not what i got it for
Laptops can totally be used for gaming! This however is not such a model. I have a Dell Vostro 1500. It's an older model, but it runs every game I've thrown at it. I got mine configured with a 2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 667 MHz RAM, 320 GB 7200 RPM HDD, and nVidia 8600M GT 256 MB. Dell doesn't really have anything comparable to this besides the Studio 15 at the moment, but HP has several models that can be configured better than mine.
BTW, If you want to upgrade your HDD or RAM, do NOT get it from the manufacture. They'll overcharge an ridiculous amount. Just get it from somewhere else (Newegg, Amazon, etc.) and install it your self. You'll save a ton of money, and it's very easy.
Oh, and the Dell Studio XPS 16 as well, but I don't like the look of those with the leather. They're expensive as well. Very powerful though.
The very similar Dell Studio 14z laptop uses NVidia graphics.
and a better intel cpu, for 650-700 usd like base and can be optioned up with a higher res screen.
yeah the dell studio 14z is a lot better option at almost the same price...
These don't even look much thinner/lighter than the studio 14z....im not seeing the benefit
The advantage about these is the battery life, that and only that.
Dell: Giving you three thousand configuration choices (from mice to headphones to software to carrying bags to a frigging Nintendo Wii) you don't want instead of the one you do (Ubuntu). Never before has buying a computer been so obfuscated!
Do you suppose there's someone at Dell that's actually confused about why Apple owns 90% of the $1000+ computer market in the US?
I can guarantee you that it's not because they don't offer Ubuntu.
It's the only reason I bought a Dell, and the only way I'll buy another one. If they don't pander to my minority I'll be less than happy, but entirely willing to fork out twice as much for a comparably specced Apple computer.
ok that comment from apple fanboys kinda starting annoying me
yes apple has that much market shares in the 1000 dollar range mainly cuz apple doesn't sell anything under a thousand so every one who is an apple fan boy has spend over a grand not giving as choice
but hey great apple has 90% of a price range that only make 10% of people who buy laptops 90% of people shopping for computer don't wanna spend a thousand dollars
most regular people don't want or need a computer that expensive
so dell making a decent laptop at 500 range where 90% of the people looking for computer are at
is probable going to give them a better return on there investment then trying to market only to people in the 10% range of 1000 or more
I despise Apple, don't call me a fanboy.
Please get the entire statistic correct: Apple has 90% of the $1,000+ laptops in *US retail sales.*
Considering most OEM's don't sell $1,000+ laptops in retail locations, it is pretty obvious why Apple touts that statistic. I guarantee you Dell has never sold one of their Precision laptops in a retail outlet. It's impossible to find a optioned out XPS laptop at a Best Buy. All of their high-end sales are online/enterprise sales. Dell's Precision line laptop alone likely outsells the Apple MBP by a wide margin - but Apple's very narrow laptop statistic gets misconstrued/quoted over and over again, so people believe otherwise.
The fact that I didn't know those machines /existed/ until just now would lead me to think otherwise..
Google trends indicates 15x more interest in the MacBook Pro than the dell Precision.
The Dell Precision is a BUSINESS class series. Besides those, there are many other manufactures of business class laptops. The MacBook Pro is the only option if you want dedicated graphics. Obviously there would be more people searching for info on it in Google Trends.
Can someone explain why one would get these instead of the ASUS U81A-RX05 (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9366562&type=product&id=1218092151327) from Best Buy that has around the same price with a Core 2 Duo processor?
From what I've heard so far, the intel CULV processors are a big letdown.
BTW, I have the ASUS and it is very nice.
I have one and I don't see it as being a let down. BTW you can get a Dell Studio 14z for a little more and have a better Core 2 Duo and nvidia ion gpu and looks the same as this. Plus as previously stated you can get a higher res screen.
come's with glare or glossy screen??!
Ok, the pink is really cute, but I'd pass even if they had a rainbow/purple telly tubby edition. RIP Jerry Falwell.
What the hell is with the shift back to tray loading optical drives? Yick. All the Dell Studios had them at one point, even some of the Vostros. It's classy stuff, then they shitcanned them.
Is it able to pump out 5.1 sound thru that HDMI out? Or stereo sound even? Now that they are giving a digital video output on these laptops, i might want to use it to play dvds or encoded MKVs on a tv. It would be nice if i could have the 5.1 sound come thru the HDMI too. But for some reason i doubt that the hardware makes it possible.
Ugh, who the fuck wants a lowly Core 2 Solo in a laptop as big as this? Even a Pentium Dual-Core will perform better.
Here's a link to a video to a guy from Notebooks.com who reviews these new ULV processor notebooks, if any of you guys are interested.
http://www.tvlesson.com/video/38323_dell-studio-14z-review.html
I remember when you used to be able to get a real processor in small notebooks. What's with the move to ultra-slow cpus lately? Wouldn't it be better to take a mainstream Core 2 and just speedstep it down when you don't need the power, rather than castrate it altogether? I guess this is just a new market niche called "back-to-school-recession" :D
ULV vs. CULV? Anything similar?
What i don't understand is that they can fit a DVD drive in this but not the Studio 14z...
That's a LOT of RAM. Is anyone else noticing the 8GB?
yeah, and i was REALLLLLY hoping it was true =/ then i could actually revert back to a usable Vista. Nah, just kidding, Vista runs fine so don't flame me =] But i have moved on to bigger and better things....thanks Windows 7!!!
Just what I'm looking for (minus the optical drive). Now only if they offer high res. screens like they do for the Studio 14z, and an 8-cell battery. What's the battery life on these things?
One of these or the Acer? (The Acer is nice but what the hell is with the hinge that doesn't allow the screen to tilt back very far?!)
!!??!!?
Does no one care about the terribly low resolution anymore? This race to low-res displays troubles me.
Man these things need to start shipping!
