Dell teases new ultrathin Adamo XPS
We've seen some thin laptops in our day, but 9.99mm is pretty dang thin (thinner than an iPhone, in fact). There's no other info on this new Adamo, and Dell is calling it the "9.99mm Design Concept," which doesn't really help us know how far along it is. Let's just hope Dell didn't have to succumb to Atom to get the size down this far.

Oh yes, because the previous Adamo was so good, why not make it skinnier and (most likely) suck more?
It's a Dell-Dell combination!
I bet it has an Atom, and costs $2499.99
That pic sure is sexxxxxxy though.
Couldn't agree more...
hey App4that, doesn't that mean Apple IS the devil?
oh fail me, I thought App4that meant the date, 9-9-09. Well, both work for me I guess.
That's awesome, but it's going to cost so much if they market it like they did with the last one. Hopefully they learned their lesson.
Why does everyone think that only Apple is allowed to charge premium for good design and build quality?
Apples Macbook Air was actually far cheaper with significantly better specs than the original Adamo. If this is anything like the original, it's going to cost a premium on top of the premium.
Exactly... The design/engineering was excellent... But they need to beef up it's processor, GPU, and SSD, and cut the price by 30%, and you'd have a winner.
Or you need to lower your expectations for using a nilla wafer for a computer.
Bring it to class, type papers, browse the web, and look dam good doing it. Maybe some light spreadsheet editing or graphics work.
Don't go playing games on this thing, then complain when it siezes up and leaves burns in your lap.
@Proud Japanese
Because only Apple users are starved of good quality at a good price. They've just come to accept it.
I really don't think these are geared towards regular nerds like us. They are for the people that have more money than brains, who want something that looks great while they check their facebook at starbucks.
"Don't go playing games on this thing, then complain when it siezes up and leaves burns in your lap."
The sad part is, for less money, with the newer Macbook Airs, you actually CAN play games at reasonable settings, unlike the Adamo with its lovely Intel X3100.
whoa! what the hell is that?
is it even possible to make a laptop that thin without making it totally useless?
as the macbook air showed, the answer is no
That's damn good-looking. It may be too good-looking for me to afford.
It's a really long and thin version of something people regularly make self love...I mean fall in love with.
This is the tablet that Apple was supposed to announce today before they decided to host a suckfest.
This might fit that douche's jeans pocket in that Apple presentation today!
@vbtrash: Or up his ass.
It went from:
Two months ago: OMG, iTablet in September!!!
3 weeks ago: Oh well, at least we will get camera iPod Touchs
Today: FAIL
*Squealing with delight!*
They can do that?! OMG, OMG, OMG!!!
sloppy blogging "hope they didn't subcumb to atom" when it has been widely advertised as core2duo for quite some time.
You're a little slow, huh? How has a prototype that was just shown today been widely advertised as having a core2duo?
If they are going to release something like this it's no surprise that they are teasing it today.
I don't see them releasing something Atom based with XPS branding, but I can't see them going that thin with anything else.
Well if the case is entirely aluminum (probably) then some clever heat-piping could allow for a higher-end processor.
From Xavier over at Notebooks.com who claims to have had a no-pictures play with a working prototype:
http://www.notebooks.com/2009/09/09/dell-adamo-xps-a-9-99mm-thick-concept-notebook/
"The Dell Adamo XPS is an ultraportable-sized device and not a netbook" so I'm guessing it's a good chance it's not an Atom.
"The Adamo XPS has a full keyboard that flips away from the display." so I'm guessing it's not a tablet either.
if it doesnt run Atom i'd consider getting it.
I'll get it if it runs an i7
Dude, if this thing rocks an i7, it'll fry your... um.
Let's just say this would be one laptop that might just come with a disclaimer warning users not to run it on their LAPS.
*applause*
wow a centimeter? But I'm guessing it has completely useless internals.
99.9% centimeter...
Common ULV. It has the XPS tag, they wouldn't ruin that name by using Atom right?
*Consumer* ULV
If we rename the VAIO X to VAIO XPS, does that me we get a ULV with it?
@Jacob: No, that meant "Come on", as in I'm hoping for it. Haha, funny that it turned out that way though.
Is it just me or that thing looks like tablet?
Looks like there's a seem running down the middle, and an indentation for a latch. So, I'm thinking notebook.
"Looks like there's a seem running down the middle, and an indentation for a latch. So, I'm thinking notebook." ~Hey Ya
I was thinking the same thing, but I looked a little closer, and that 'indentation' shows up on the bottom as well which makes me think it's actually a reflection. I first thought they were using the old illusionist trick of making things appear smaller by darkening parts and using a dark background, but now it's looking quite sleek. Let's just hope the price is down to Earth.
It's actually a really long stylus.
That made me chuckle:D
does it fit inside a manila envelope?
Fit in a manila envelope!? It'll cut through one!
So I guess this one will cost like $6999 right? Dell makes BITCHIN' student and business notebooks; I love them for that, but the Adamo is horseshit man.
Fitting in with the 9 theme, it'll be $9,999
That's Apple tablet. They rebrand it as Adamo coz they don't wanna release it today.
i owned a new macbook air for 4 days (rev b hhd). every time i played a youtube video (even in sd) the fans would rev up to 6200 rpm's and blast away. what good is a super portable if i can't even watch a youtube video on it? looking forward to the day when thinness will also equal doing popular applications like youtube watching (without costing a fortune). until then, i'll gladly use my 13" macbook pro
Yeah well, the OS X version of the Flash player is a bad joke.
