Dell teases new ultrathin Adamo XPS
We've seen some thin laptops in our day, but 9.99mm is pretty dang thin (thinner than an iPhone, in fact). There's no other info on this new Adamo, and Dell is calling it the "9.99mm Design Concept," which doesn't really help us know how far along it is. Let's just hope Dell didn't have to succumb to Atom to get the size down this far.

Looks a like a spear to me
Its gotta be a tablet. No way you can make a folding laptop with keyboard that thin.
Something like a 6" Win7 tablet would be sweet, especially if it could handle HD video. Could be Dells attempt to pre-empt the supposed Apple tablet
Watch me poke a hole through the screen like it was a piece of paper.
techboner on the way
At 9.99mm? Hardly!
and they're announcing it on this day (9/9/09)? Is there a 9 theme going on today?
that was a good observation, you should recieve a prize for that
I call bullshit, I'm convinced that Dell is only currently capable of producing computers that don't look circa 1999
I remember when the first pics of adamo got "released" we all hoped and dreamed about a really sexy notebook we wouldn't have to be ashamed to use in public coffee shops (lets be realistic!!) or actually so we could actually say I'm a proud Dell Notebook user... but what we've got was like a nice sportscar with a volkswagen beetle engine and a price tag of a fancy sportscar... so in this case I've become realistic and I'll wait until that little dell is out...but it'll cost for sure 2000+bucks thats a pretty safe bet
looks cool
However to me (strength and ruggedness with a slim size/weight) is much more impressive.
Now if this was a thinkpad x200 X2 that was 9.9mm with Carbon fiber and high grade materials, then it would be different.
however if you sit on this, its gona be toast.
I wouldn't sit on any laptop (although I understand some make a living out of it).
OMG ITS 9.99mm and they released the info on 9.9.09 WHAT ARE WE TO DO !!!
It wouldn't be that thin unless it was using the Atom Z500, which has a 800 MHz clock speed and a 0.65 W TDP.
it looks EXACTLY like the air or a long, flat tampon.
A perfect computer for a ninja.
Only if it also comes in matt black.
I came in Matt Black....
And?
Trying to convince yourself that it's crap before you even know anything concrete about it?
If the teaser read Apple instead of dell and iSuck instead of Adamo then the world would rejoice. Stop talking shit about a product you dont know. For Dell, Adamo is luxury and XPS power, so prepare to be surprised.
WOW! That is amazingly thin. I hope Dell goes through with this and we get to see it in the near future. Hopefully Dell can bring a decent MacBook Air competitor to the table (not that there aren't any now).
Wow, imagine the clean cuts you can make in a cake with that thing!
If it is a clamshell device, I would honestly be scared to death of accidentally destroying it. That would mean each side would be about 5mm. I can easily see accidentally snapping or at least severely bending the chassis from even normal use (eg; say opening it from even slightly off-center grip on each side). From that standpoint alone I would bet it's tablet based.
Multitouch anyone?
Happy 9/9/09 everyone!
You know how they were saying OLED screens are coming soon to laptops?
I'd say this is gonna be the first.
Who needs such a thin laptop?
sex me.
I guess Adamo is not a laptop line anymore. It's a jewelry line. Not for use as a computer, just for showing off.
Without any real specs, the ad looks like they're selling platinum jewelry with a price to match!
When they say "wafer-thin", they mean it's just an actual wafer. The heatsink and fan is optional and adds another 25mm to the thickness.
But pound anything hard enough, and it will flatten to 9.99mm... it'll end up 3x4 feet in dimensions, though, like a party-size pizza.
How thin can somebody possibly make a computer? You still need the LCD, keyboard, battery and some way to cool the CPU. Then there's the issue with strength... I'm very interested how this will turn out.
I've been a fan of Dell's new design direction since they starting focusing on aesthetics a bit more and this new Adamo XPS is likely to keep up the good design streak that they're on right now. They now need to really step it up in the marketing department and try to get themselves to a point where people enthusiastically anticipate new products from them they like MS and Apple. Big ask, I know but that's where they should be.
9.99 mm? Really?
A MacBook Pro is nearly 2.5X that thickness. A Macbook Air at its thickest is over 2X that thick. Why does that matter? Because like it or not, they're pretty much the gold standard for thin/light aluminum laptop designs. If this thing really is a full laptop with a hinged screen, it's either absolutely huge in surface area to make up for the lack of height (meaning 19+ inch screen), or woefully underpowered with some sort of super-ultra-low-voltage processor, or Dell has found a way to miraculously cool this thing without having it set your pants on fire. If it's a full-out no compromises 9.9mm thin laptop with a screen size that isn't absolutely ridiculously huge to spread out the internal components and keep them cool, then I'll be the first in line to apologize for ever having made fun of Dell and their designers/engineers.
Seems more likely that it's some sort of tablet, but even then it's an impressive design achievement. Consider this: an iPod Nano is 6.2mm thin.
Whatever it is, it's probably going to be pretty damn cool.
hahaha 9.99mm on 09/09/09 how classic~
