Nokia puts Booklet 3G netbook up for pre-order... in Italy
So, we've got some good news and bad news. The good news is that Nokia's already offering up its Booklet 3G netbook for pre-order over in Italy, which is becoming an all-too-familiar scene for Nokia wares. The bad news is that the posted price is, um, absurd. During a keynote at Nokia World 09, listeners were told that the Windows 7-powered machine would ring up at "just" €570, yet Nokia's own Italian e-store has it listed for €699. That's just over a grand in Greenbacks, though we get the feeling it'll be selling for substantially less once the feel-good emotions fade and cold, hard economics take their toll.
Update: As pointed out in the comments, the announced €570 price was likely pre-tax and pre-carrier subsidy as is typical for Nokia's European announcements. The €699 price is thus VAT inclusive.

Or you buy it as part of a comms package from your local phone shop.
Or you buy a Samsung N310 (possibly orange or mint blue) , be much happier geek and with the money you did'nt waste financing Nokia experiments you get yourself a nice HTC Leo or Hero.
Depends on the deals being offered, old son.
Lovely jubbly.
it would have to be a pretty impressive deal. like 50% off.
Win! First!
damn or second. But what are the spec on it?!
Failst!
Oh, and AGAIN the not-so-insightful editors at Engadget forgot how Euros usually translate to Dollars when a product is launched in the US market. The ratio is _always_ 1:1, not the actual rate of 1:45 (circa).
That just baffles me every time. Dear Engadget, it really isn't that hard. Please, even try it for once.
Erm, where did they do that in this article? And BTW: purchasing power parity doesn't normally lead to 1:1 the PPP exchange rate is somewhere close to 1:1.2
@Quapo
The things they have to resort to to generate traffic.
There's a thing called VAT or as the italians call it: imposta sul valore aggiunto (IVA). 570€ + 20% = ...
In Europe and in Italy too, prices are always tax included. So 570€ is the final price, tax included!
I know this because I live in Italy.
@alfa so you've never seen the phrase 'ex. VAT'? Prices are not always VAT-inclusive. I know this because I am British.
@ Marmite turkey
You are right, they are not always VAT included but at least 95% of the times they are.
So do Nokia make a 400% mark-up on the actual build cost of all their products?
You fail at making a snark remark. Or was it humor you were after? Fail anyway.
There are a lot of things justifying the price:
- 16-cell battery which is user replaceable
- single-piece aluminum casing
- GPS
- 3G
- accelerometer
- HDMI
- beautiful design, which naturally is subjective
- fanless cooling solution
I also hope the integrated graphics will be a pleasant surprise. Not holding my breath though..
"- fanless cooling solution"
they are skimping out on a fan to cool down your netbook to save money after a few other "solutions" they hit there goal of a 400% markup
There are other fanless netbooks, the Dell Mini 9 for example.
Completely useless booklet, 700€ for Atom booklet that has 1GB of memory that can't be increased. Opening apps is lasting over 40secs according to first tests. Fail.
Price, 1GB RAM and your preview experiences make it COMPLETELY useless... Hmm.. maybe you are completely useless :)
the world does not revolve around the us
They think it does
European consumer prices (listed in stores etc.) almost always include the Value Added Tax, which in most EU countries hover around 20%.
When is Engadget going to start using the "...in USA" suffix on all of its posts about products which are only available to order there?
They are a US based blog, so it's implied.
What do you expect from a cell phone maker? All they know how to do is mark up prices to laughable levels.
its up for pre order in the UK on handtec...
http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php/2326/nokia-booklet-3g
*sigh*
Engadget, are you trying to be dumb on purpose? I get the impression that you're just trolling now.
As pointed out in the comments of LAST post you wrote containing this mistake and again in THIS one, you're forgetting that EU prices are inclusive of tax. Do the math, it works out perfectly to Nokia's recommended price.
For Engadget:
in Europe and in Italy too, prices are always tax included not like in the US where you have to add local taxes. So 570€ IS THE FINAL PRICE, TAX INCLUDED!
I know this because I live in Italy.
Tax is included in customer prices yes. Nokia on the other hand usually announces the prices without taxes because the taxes aren't the same throughout Europe...
So I'd still guess that 570€ is price without taxes (in Italy +20%, in Finland +22%, in X +18%, etc.)
Could be worse but I'm picking this up via T-Mobile or Vodafone depending on which one has the best plans (or something else) in Holland, so the price doesn't matter that much. Does this one do HD video due to the HDMI port?
@ Eric
No, in Europe prices are always announced tax included because there is not a single announce for all Europe but several announces for every single country even if they have the same currency like euro. So it will be 570 € tax included for Italy. Maybe in Germany it will be 10 euro cheaper but still around 570 € ant still tax included. And so on.
Look here: http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php/2326/nokia-booklet-3g price in UK is 517.49 £ (pounds) tax included or 449.99 £ plus tax! And 517 £ is equal to 570 €.
So there is no doubt that 570 € is the final price.
Quante cazzate stai sparando Alfa? i prezzi non sono sempre IVA inclusa, ma dove vivi?
Alfa,
you are wrong. And I have lived in Italy as well. Prices can be without IVA (VAT) as well.
HP online displays prices without VAT in Spain and the rest of Europe.
You are right, they are not always tax included but at least 95% of the times they are.
In this case the price is tax included because if you read here http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php/2326/nokia-booklet-3g
and make pound/euro conversion you fill find that the final price is 570 €.
@geimsss
va a lavorare cafone, tipico italiano che deve sempre farsi riconoscere come tale...
Carrier ? what carrier it's netbook not a phone?
Oh I'm out of the loop I guess.
Well didn't apple state that the iphone was 299, when it actually was 1400 -2400 depending on how you bought it,
But engadget lick balls on steve Bjobs
hmm i'm assuming by your post that you pay 0 for your phone and get your contract for free or do you live in a special place?? everywhere it's the same..you think that the nokia n97 was for free when it came out not really so in the end you also paid 1400-2400 for that brick (no offence n97 users) ... even if u buy a phone for free you'll pay in the end more then you would pay if you buy it without contract...
and we thought that Sony's little P was a luxory toy but this one does not stand apart of it... the sony has at least an unique design..
Another well-thought Nokia marketing move. Remember ngage? :)
If Apple made a conventional-ish netbook, I reckon it would be almost exactly like this.
Except it would be a little bit lighter and thinner, have less features and be a bit more expensive.
Fact is, Apple would never do a netbook.
failure failure failure... running Win7 with only 1G RAM, and worst soldered onboard, non-upgradeable. maybe running Symbian would be better off.
you are big failure than Nokia ,
that processor does not support more than 1GB of ram !
Of course it is vat inclusive. Only a crazy country would list all their prices without vat, so costumers have to pull up a calculator to figure out the real price.
this machine is a good start. there are a few nice items in there including screen, GPS and the 3G card, but really they must work on including more powerful CPU and more memory as well as maybe making use of MAEMO linux...
The price is irrelevant because with only 1 GB of RAM, this machine is going nowhere.
Shame really 'cos if it had 2 GB of RAM then I would buy one at UKP 517.
Still waiting for other companies to sell those features at a more reasonable price.
If I remember well, retail prices in the Beautiful Country are always "IVA inclusa" - could well be € 570 with some pimping from TIM or Vodafone, although subsidy is virtually non existent there, apart from the iP***e
