HP's 11.6-inch Mini 311 pairs Atom with NVIDIA ION graphics, Windows XP

A dual-core atom and it would be perfect.
Yes please.
They tried it: http://www.liliputing.com/2009/09/dospara-prime-note-cresion-na-packs-blu-ray-ion-graphics-dual-core-atom-cpu.html
Has less battery life than most laptops, just get an ultraportable.
OMG!!!! You guys just don't stop, you get ION!! and you ask for more. LOL. :)
I think this might be the netbook 4 me :) Finally Full HD support and HDMI. Perfect mediacenter device.
per microsoft restrictions, netbooks with Win7 Starter MUST only have a single core processor. So don't look for dual core Atoms in the future on netbooks. As such, once these micro-notebooks DO come with more powerful processors, they cease to be netbooks but rather low end micro-notebooks.
@musback: It *would* be a perfect media center device if it could play back HD Flash videos full screen, which it can't. When Adobe finally gets around to supporting GPU offload for flash, maybe it'll be able to, but for now it can't. Meaning it can't handle Hulu HD full screen, which means it really isn't a great media center device actually.
And yes, it *can* handle Blu-Ray and *can't* handle HD Flash. No I don't know why.
Okay, here's the deal. It's time for Windows XP to go. It's had a good run and it's pathetic that they are putting an 8-year old OS on these netbooks. If they can't handle Vista or 7, perhaps the hardware needs to catch up?
All those netbooks that have XP on them get a free upgrade to 7 when it comes out in October. Since 7 isn't officially out the netbooks don't come stock with it.
@deifinityx: The Windows 7 upgrade is only for new computers (shipped after 6/26/09) that had Vista Home/Business Premium or Ultimate pre-installed.
Yeah mistaken on that, i guess they didn't want the xp editions to upgrade to 7. I thought someone was offering free upgrades to 7 on a netbook though.
Wow this laptop looks good.
Both Gizmodo and jkontherun report that there will be an Windows 7 option if you wait till the end of October (when W7 becomes available). But since the Mini 311 starts shipping pretty much right now, it's XP only for a month or so.
Kinda obvious, isn't it, Mr Miller?

I like how the pictures show windows 7 though.
LOL! WTF??
Nice catch!
Good point, my thoughts exactly.
Also: Flash 10 has GPU support? Correct me if I'm wrong.
Nope, Adobe still hasn't figured out to how use the GPU for something as simple as video playback.
MS' Silverlight does, though, and it would probably play streaming HD videos just fine. The problem is just that no page uses it...
exactly what i was going to say
Nah... I would rather it come with windows 7. I have 7 installed on my netbook, and as far as I'm concerned XP is dead (at least for me).
Yep. The weekend after October 22nd I will have all of my computers on 7 and say "Good night, thanks for the memories!' to XP.
Already running legit win7... thank you MSDN =D

sorry, saw typo after i clicked add comment
Funny thing is that the corrected version somehow got in before the incorrect version.
that's what i thought too. :-)
Centered trackpad FTW
Couldn't agree more! This thing is awesome
Yes, the trackpad is centered, but the keyboard isn't aligned with it. Look where the gap between the G and the H lines up with the trackpad. Doesn't look comfortable to me.
Good old archaic crappy Windows XP. Sad that this is the best existing Microsoft OS for Netbooks.
Most of the blame goes to intel. Between their shitty graphics and atom processor (which hasn't been updated for god knows how long) there is very little choice for an mainstream OS that people have no problems with. Vista is a good OS, the netbook hardware just can't handle it (thanks intel).
@daytripper,
Agreed. Intel was pretty much behind the whole "Vista Capable" bullshit and yes, this Atom crap is getting old. "Sorry, can't process streaming HD or Flash!"
Please...
HP make cool wallpapers.
I'll wait for the Business line version, will most likely have 802.11n and 10/100/1000 cable. Also will most likely come out with Win7 or the choices of Linux + 2-3gigs of ram, then I can upgrade to win7 myself.
Yeah, a 5101 successor with 11" screen would be sweet!
So, help me out here. This new Nvidia Ion graphics chip; can it run last generation games, older games like doom 3 and need for speed most wanted / carbon or is that even too much for it. Just trying to get an idea of what this chip is capable on a gaming level.
Simple. It's a netbook, you don't play games on it.
I can play Halo on low settings with a GMA950 at about 20 FPS, so this should be able to play stuff way higher. I'd draw the line at Portal, just a guess.
*945, not 950.
Not that anyone cares.
This will be my next Netbook purchase. Should easily be better then the Dell Mini 9 I returned long ago (part hardware issue, part just didn't like it).
I can complain about the $400 starting price tag. As soon as you customize it - even if you don't change *anything* - it jumps a couple hundred dollars. I've liked many of HP's products, but I'm not paying a couple hundred just for the privilege of customization.
Sad, as otherwise an Ion-based netbook is exactly what I've been waiting for, and HP has had some of the best industrial design of any of them.
great stuff from HP for those who, like myself, wish to stick with the lighter XP on their small laptop!!
-does the "not currently supported" mean that it may do so in future??
- any chance of offering a version (of the many listed) with a small SSD instead of a large HDD? (perhaps even upping the price a little)
Anyone know where we can find some performance graphs of Ion LE?
Can't... see... windows... rating...
I am confused by the headline saying that it comes with Xp but the screenshoot clearly show it running WIn7. Not that I would blame anyone for ditching good ole xp for the new boy.
Give me a CULV processor with ION please! Combine the Acer 1410/1810's processor with this!
when is flash getting GPU hardware acceleration???
@maveric101 - Apparently sometime early next year...
Remember though, using Linux and it'll be able to use VDPAU to play HD flash smoothly... just not on Windows :(
Awesome little machine! Perfect price point considering the other market offers with weaker hardware.
The keyboard size and layout seems very comfortable, the 11.6' also seem to include 1336x768 resolution or similar.
If i had to point out something not so good it would be the CPU, a N280\SU3500 would be a little better\quite better.
What chipset does the ION use? 9400m? 9300?
I believe it is the 9400m
