Dell curiously announces ST2210 and ST2310 LCD monitors
Oh, Dell. Oftentimes we wonder if you guys even want consumers to know that you've got new kit for them to ogle. Shortly after we discovered that the ST2410 LCD monitor was both a) real and b) on sale, we're now having to turn to YouTube in order to catch wind that two smaller models have also been announced to accompany it. The ST2210 is a 21.5-inch panel with a 1080p resolution, 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio (we know, we know...), 250 nits of brightness, a five millisecond response time and HDMI / VGA / DVI inputs. The 23-inch ST2310 is essentially a larger version of the 2210, with screen size being the only real differentiating factor. We should note, however, that unlike many Dell LCDs of the past, these two go Apple-style and ditch the ability to adjust height up or down; you can angle the LCD forward and back, but that's it. Both are available now for $259 and $229 in order of mention, and yes, that does mean that you can get more for less.
[Thanks, John]

"Both are available now for $259 and $229 in order of mention," does that mean that the 21.5 inch is more expensive then the 23 inch?
"and yes, that does mean that you can get more for less."
Sigh.
i got my 24" dell a year ago for around 230...
I got my Dell 30-incher two years ago for $1500. I feel robbed...
Don't. Their current 30" model goes for $1,699.00.
You're comparing budget TN panels and high end stuff (SuperIPS, I think?). You're comparing 1920x1080 with 2560x1600. Dual link DVI with single link. Barebones connectivity with kitchen-sink connectivity.
Adam, we get the point!
Engadget: Dell's jilted lover.
Why should Dell spend a bundle of money advertising their products when they have the bloggers at Engadget do it for them?
That price for a TN?
No thanks.
I'll take TENNESSEE price.
Where is my comment?
\/ there and there ^
Why can no other company make hardware as visually appealing as Apple? why not hire some top notch designers and finally come up with something that doesn't look industrial, something that inspires beauty like apple products do.
Why can Apple fanboys not realize that not everyone shares their sense of taste? Why not realize that people are different and like different things, and that some people may find beauty in the things they find ugly?
Personally I'm indifferent between this and an Apple monitor. If I had to choose I would probably go with the Dell, because black would fit the rest of my stuff better than brushed aluminum.
someone should do an HSBC style advert on this theme.
I've got a dell 2209WA that looks quite sharp, power button is easy to find and it moves nicely up/down,side to side and tilts just fine.
This one hear looks like Dell is taking to many cues from Apple. People shouldn't have to put books under their monitor to get it to a comfortable height. Looking down at a monitor can be a real pain.
(I use an Apple cinema display at work btw)
The first link is to Dell Australia, thus the figure $259 is in AUD.
The ST2210 is $199 USD. http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&sku=320-0921&redirect=1
Dorks.
you didnt...
It has a $ sign, so therefore it means American.

@ Matt
... We're not the only ones who use the $ as a sign for currency.
@chris Your sarcasm detector seems to be broken.
So I guess I shouldn't have passed on that 23" 1080p dell monitor for $155 new (free shipping) last week, right? Even if it was just DVI, I can't imagine HDMI would be worth that much.
sigh.
Who cares about HDMI on a computer LCD? You're hooking it up to your PC, which outputs DVI, and is better than HDMI from what I've heard and seen.
What's the highest resolution an HDMI port can handle? I know I've seen DVI do some crazy-big numbers.
HDMI is useful for hooking up a games console or TV tuner to it for a little entertainment outside of the PC world. Also HDMI does have some value if it is HDCP compatible.
Dell should improve design..

Don't let someone who does ergonomics hear that one. Being a software developer we have to have an ergonomics evaluation every year and the first thing they do to my setup is push both my monitors way down and say my eyes should be in the top 3/4 of the screen and looking down on everything else. "Its better for the neck".... only seems to put me to sleep easier.
The SP2309W is a much better deal. Has webcam (if you are into that sort of thing) built in, better resolution 2000xsomething, was onnsale for $239 this week, and better viewing angles.
"50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio (we know, we know...)"
I have been reading a few of these on recent Engadget articles. I'm not sure I understand what this means... Can someone explain what the "we know, we know..." is all about?
Thanks!
all you need to know is the word dynamic.
It's basically a bullshit statistic. When you turn dynamic contrast on it lowers the brightness to get better black levels (which results in black crush or loss of details). The only thing you should care about is the static contrast ratio.
How about we do away with the whole concept of mentioning contrast ratios on LCD and start mentioning a number for the blacklevels reachable, because that's what's important often in games and watching videos, can it go black?, and contrast levels might just say it can go very bright white for instance while never getting a decent black.
Who decided that anyway? The items that are always listed I mean, seems very random per device often.
I ordered the ST2310 on the 2nd/September, and got it last week, I thought it was a great deal.
(And then wondered where it went on their website. Heh.)
Good priced...
The reason Dell doesn't announce their stuff, is they don't care if people know about their products. They make their money based on ignorance, not knowledge.
Sorry, I just don't like Dell. Their business is shady...
Their 2309 model is better. 80,000:1 at 2048x1152. Why would they replace a fantastic monitor with these lame ones?
ST2210 sounds like my ASUS VH226 1080p 21.5' LCD. Exact specs. Seen a Viewsonic with the same stuff too. All same components rebranded methinks. I paid around £166 ($273USD) for my screen earlier in the year when they were quite new on the market. They need tuning colourwise but apart from that they're great monitors. Use the PS3 on it too for gaming and Blu-rays with the included HDMI input. A strange thing though is that if you connect the screen to a PC via a DVI-HDMI dongle it won't detect as HDCP however over DVI it does and on my 8800GS the HDMI out is colour limited, which I'm guessing its due to NVIDIA drivers. Plain 'ol DVI is ok though and HDCP works properly.
