HP and Dell working on 3D gaming laptops?

After the IFA show in Berlin a few weeks ago, it's clear that 3D is getting a big push by some powerful players in consumer electronics. Unfortunately, you won't find many editors around here chompin' at the bit to replace their new Full HD flat screens for a 3D-capable one... and we've seen the demos! Now a Commercial Times report has HP and Dell signed on with Wistron to produce 3D laptops -- Lenovo and Sony are still negotiating. Of course, we've already seen desktop systems powered by NVIDIA's GeForce 3D Vision solution. And rumors have swirled in the past regarding a possible HP laptop using 18.4-inch 3D panels developed by Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) and a Wistron-developed 3D laptop solution based around NVIDIA's Vision technology. Thing is, if 3D isn't that compelling on screens 40-inches and above, how's it going to woo consumers at this size?

That pic is awesome. The only thing that would've made it more appropriate is if it were an IBM press conference, but Sony works too.
I'm afraid I can't let you do that, Dave
Ok I'll be the first one to say it. 3D porn.
You got that right, if the porn industry starts using 3D we can be sure it won't take long for it to become standard.
^^^^Very NSFW^^^^
I clicked it thinking it was just a joke. I'm now emotionally scarred and will never have a lasting relationship or something.
Seek comfort in gadgets.
Anyone that has been to a 3D Movie lately will have to admit that they finally got it right. It's whole new experience. Just when I was starting to feel comfortable with my Plasma TV and Projector. Now I will have to save money to get a 3D display. I personally hate the fact that I can no longer say "I can get the same experience at home".
No it's not. The sooner this 3D fad buggers off the better. 3D adds nothing to the movie experience, the cinemas charge you more for the privilege of watching a 3D version and you get to sit around wearing stupid glasses. The only group that really wants this is the likes of the MPAA who can use this to reduce piracy (which I am in favour of but just not this way).
Kelmon I have to disagree. Even if I had to pay extra for a 3D presentation I would do it, however I currently own a Movie theater membership that grants me access to any show even at VIP theaters so I don't really have to pay anything else to watch a 3D movie. And if i had to choose between an 3D show and it's flat version and had to pay extra I'd definitely go with 3D.
Now about piracy, this won't have too much effect on that, It might slow it down at first (as in the CAM versions will be less attractive) but once the equipment to view 3D shows hits the consumers pirated content will be available just like everything else
Sorry, but what does 3D bring to the movie experience? It doesn't help tell the story better, make the actors act better (usually because the movie in question is a CGI one), improve the lighting or produce a better musical score. 3D effects do not look like reality so it doesn't help me feel more immersed in the film.
I should note that I am not impressed by a lot of things in cinemas. Surround sound really didn't do anything much for me and I have a special hatred for movies that are full of CGI (yes, I'm looking at the likes of "Transformers" and "GI Joe"). However, I will say that I am impressed with IMAX since it fills your view and "removes" you from the cinema. That said, IMAX is hardly appropriate for the home unless your first initials are HRH...
Why do we need HD? SD was FINE! Why do we need color TVs? Black and white was FINE! Why do we need computers? Typewriters were FINE! Why do we need MP3 players? The radio was FINE! Why do we need CDs? Cassettes were FINE!
Go tie a CRT to your ankles and throw yourself in a river, you goddamned luddite. You are so ignorant, so lacking in logic that a two way argument would be impossible. 3D is a big leap forward in all forms of visual media and it's finally ready for primetime. If you have two eyes, you have no reason to resist!
Kelmon must be forgetting to say he's being sarcastic... either that or he has never used his own two eyes to view the world around him. Anyone that sees the world in "3D" will benefit from ALL visual media switching to 3D! Its incredibly ignorant and stupid to say otherwise.
He said "3D effects do not look like reality so it doesn't help me feel more immersed in the film."
So if he feels it's just gimmicky and doesn't do it for him then it's a bit hysterical and 'burn the witch' psychology to not accept that
And come on, it's not similar to how the CD improved sound, or MP3 made audio more portable and easily transmitted, and computers are not comparable with typewriters at all of course, but I assume you meant word-processors, but those too added stuff like edibility and later electronic storage and portability.
And they made 7 channel mp3's possible and I bet you aren't using those, even though it's newer than stereo.
Oh, for pities sake.
No, I'm not being in the slightest bit sarcastic. Let me put this in terms that may be understood: 3D SUCKS. It looks absolutely fake and adds nothing to the cinematic experience. I do not understand why anyone defends this nonsense. Not all advances in technology are good and this is one of them. What is worse is that you are being hoodwinked and that's very sorry to see.
I just don't see the infatuation with 3D right now. Until it is perfected and affordable they might as well not even bring it out. Even then, I'll be satisfied with good 2D graphics. Someone please help me see the light.
"Until it is perfected and affordable they might as well not even bring it out."
So you're completely new to the tech industry, right?
Ha ha, good point. What was I thinking? Well, at least a little bit better before they bring it out.
Although, a 3D FPS would be awesome. Wish I could delete that last comment.
well, maybe you can try a 3rd person shooter instead...
Try going back to 1997 with quake and the 3dFX glasses. This is almost the same tech they had 12 years ago. Barely anything has changed except maybe running at a little higher refresh rates to help with the headaches. I think this is such a stupid gimmick.
This is NOT the same old crap that was around with 3DFX. Hundreds of games support this round of 3D gear.
I've played hours upon hours of 3D games, such as Aion, Assassin's Creed, Prototype, Bioshock, Burnout Paradise, Fear 2, Far Cry 2, Mass Effect, HL2EP2, Mirror's Edge, Dead Space, and many more. 3D is here, it's not headache inducing and it brings a new level of immersion to your games. Half Life 2: Episode 2, when the ant lion is rushing, gave me an adrenaline rush. Bioshock is actually scary in 3D, too. Trying to describe 3D gaming to someone who hasn't experienced it before is like explaining color TV to someone with a black and white TV. You just don't understand how necessary it is until you've seen it with your own eyes.
One more thing: Forget about the iz3d crap. THAT is headache inducing. Geforce 3D Vision with the Samsung 2233rz is the only way to go, at the moment.
If that is true, that you played all these games, you'd be bitching that the GUI elements and the crosshairs are 2D and that that is confusing and disturbing
But you are saying geforce is so great and flawless, but hey, wasn't nividia the one who hired people to write of forums and comment sections? Coincidence probably.
While 3D on a laptop screen is probably less compelling, it still has a better chance of taking off because I replace my laptop a hell of a lot more often than I replace my TV.
I've been thinking for months that they really ought to make 3D-capable laptops... it should not be that hard to do. Heck, at 1280x800 or 1366x768 you don't even need DVI-dual-link speeds. All you need is a fast panel and a Nvidia chipset, plus a little IR emitter next to the webcam to signal the glasses. Plus, with a laptop, it's not like you have to choose between great colors and viewing angles (IPS) and 3D (TN)... no laptop currently in production has an IPS panel, so you might as well get one that does 3D.
If I understand right that the company produces a 14" 120Hz display, I would strongly favor a laptop incorporating that technology for my next purchase, assuming that it isn't stupid expensive. And if that 18.4" panel is full HD, hurry up and slap it into a desktop monitor, for chrissake. The 1680x1050 standard used by Viewsonic and Samsung is just a little low for my tastes... let's get a Full HD 3D monitor already.
You're right, and actually it's not difficult at all. TBH, 3D isn't as stunning as the features it requires: High refresh rate. Unbeknownst to many, a good portion of laptops already do support high refresh rate. I'm a huge proponent of this, and argue that yes, refresh rate exists for lcds, ALONG with response times... And the benefits that it yields is just simply amazing. I have myself a t61p 4:3 14.1" sxga+. It can do 1400x1050@150hz, and needless to say it simply is gorgeous and brings a whole new perspective to 10 year old games such as counter-strike 1.6. Just to throw some more info in, it can drive a IPS 1600x1200 15" display at 100hz, and IPS 2048x1536 display at 89hz, I love LVDS! bandwidth is massive..
Just a note, pixel response time doesn't necessarily need to be low enough for the refresh rate, in fact high refresh rate mitigates slow response times..
google eatbuckshot and refresh rate for any more info..
I'll buy!
I think it might actually work better on a laptop - all the glasses-less 3d tech is really sensitive to a sweet spot, right? People using laptops are usually dead on in front of them, and have a lot of leeway to adust the screen angle up/down. That said, without pretty much transparent support for every 3d-accel game out there, and some serious HP under the hood, it will suck.
I have absolutely zero interest in 3D, be it in the cinema, home TV or computer displays. However, if its introduction means that prices for current displays fall in price because they are not "the new hotness" then this is fine by me.
Look at your post up there. All I have to say is PWNED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh no - I've been Low Ranked by children. I can't tell you how traumatised I feel. And now someone has used the term "PWNED"....
Seriously, I don't care what you think. If you are OK being ripped off for 3D then that's fine by me. If I can get the same thing in 2D for less money then I'm happy since I'll have exactly the same experience. My only concern is if directors pander to 3D effects and put shots in that are there for no reason other than to show a 3D effect.
3D gaming laptops for the blind?
i dont get the negativity of 3d among tech heads and cinephiles, so what you have to wear a pair of glasses in a cinema surrounded by other people wearing the same shit or in the privacy of your own home when you stick on a movie to watch... all the 3D stuff ive seen is pretty cool, i love the added dimension it gives to films, i love the depth in scenes and yes at the minute flicks are full of gimmicks but it also adds fantastic perspectives to scenes and makes it more immersive, id rather watch the 3D version of a flick than a 2D version any time of the day and cant wait to buy into home 3D
I think the reason is that we don't "get" 3D. It doesn't look like reality so it just looks fake and cheesy and, for me, it doesn't make it in the slightest bit more immersive. That you have to wear a stupid pair of glasses and pay extra for the "honour" (at least in all the cinemas that I have been to) just rubs salt into the wound. Still, if you are easily impressed then I'm sure this is all whizzy and it looks like you'll have lots of 3D films to watch in the future so on that respect you have nothing to complain about.
Of course it doesn't look like reality, and in some films the 3D may be distracting but you gotta admit for CG toon flicks and the likes of sci-fi/horror 3D is a perfect medium to showcase effects and entertain, not sure how something like the godfather would go over mind..
As for easily impressed, whats not to be impressed about new and better technology in which to view movies, i suppose HD was met with a large MEH! from you as well...
The picture looks like it was taken at a Helen Keller lecture.
Gamers dont need to be woo'd, 3d WOW will sell
welcome to 1984.
Wow looks a lot like 1984. f.cuk YOU!
WoW 3D gaming..I wonder if they will be in the Alienware ( http://www.juggle.com/dell-dell-alienware-m17x-gaming-laptop-computer-250gb-4gb-dkdoqd1-1 ) lineup of Laptops in Dell. I was always a fan of those..
