Haier steps out of character, builds ultra-desirable Jian i7 ultra-thin laptop
The last time Haier really wowed us was back in 2007 when the company was peddling its "screen-on-a-stick" laptop tech. Two years later we've got this little beauty to drool on: the Jian i7. The 13.4-inch Core 2 Duo ULV laptop is pretty dang thin, weighs 3 pounds, and retails for a mere 6,000 Yuan (about $879 US). Where do we sign up?

I Thought It Was Core i7 :(
Ya...talk about bad marketing.
Lol....core i7 in that form factor?.Dream on!!.....its one sexy laptop btw.
i will dream on. i was really hoping for one.
hell, they can make a giant gundam, but they cant even shove an i7 into a laptop?
Sure they can shove the i7, esp the mobile version, into a laptop. It just won't be THAT thin.
Talk about good marketing, they are associating the i7 cpu and the intel brand with their laptop.
thought the same thing, then almost pantsed my crap when I quickly found the ~$800 price tag. Oh well, C2D is still good for a laptop, especially that size
FEED MY INBOX :)
Future CULVs will be sold under the i7 brand.
Confusing, I know.
Here is a giant picture with a roadmap: http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/img/pcw/docs/302/074/html/kaigai3.jpg.html
+1 for disappointment
Only to people who don't read/understand specs. Which, sadly, is a lot of computer buyers.
Still, it's a dual core, ultra low voltage CPU.
3.2cm(average 1.88cm) ULTRA THIN??
I can agree no more.
The last time Haier wowed me was when the AC unit I just paid $300 for died after a few months!!
So Haier - you can just keep this and every other piece of sh@t product you make!
In fact - someone tell me where the corporate office is so I can chuck it through their front window!!!!!!!
B@stards!
:)
How do you mistake Jian i7 for Core i7?
fan-of-itech, you are not alone.
first hater
Looks like this is the new 'hot category'... Nice
Name is incredibly misleading.
I was like "OMG i7 just got slimmer!"...
Can an i7 be inserted into a lap top?
That's like asking:
"Can an XXX be inserted into a XXX?"
Yup the Core i7m chips are out....HP envy series of laptop already has them as an option buts its very expensive and lil thicker(close to macbook pro thickness i guess)
Not Shown: Foot-thick cooling dock.
haha wtf.. on the READ link the article says that 6000 yuan is $682.
engadget got it right though, the correct conversion is about $879
READ link also says: "ULV SU7300 processor, 1.34 inch backlit LED, integrated Graphics,"
^1.34" screen.^ XD
that decimal sure makes a big difference 13.4 vs 1.34? Yeah I'll take 1.34" er no make that 13.4
Buy a monocle ;)
I dunno, I find the 1.34" display listed in the article to be a big turn-off.
Don't be such a close-minded fool. That's what magnifying glasses are for.
I had classes with a magnifying glass in high school and I can tell you, he really was a close-minded fool.
thats a barbie doll's hand, what did you expect?
Looks good...
Haier Jian i7 features a 1.3GHz Intel core 2 Duo ULV SU7300 processor, 1.34 inch backlit LED, integrated Graphics, 2G DDR3 RAM, 320GB ROM, 3 USB2.0 ports, VGA port, HDMI port and a 4 cell 2900mAh Li-ion battery.
--------
320GB ROM?
1.34 inch LED? :p
No mention of graphics chip specifics or battery life, either.
Silver colour is off-putting to me, despite this - if it doesn't overheat or something - it still looks like they crammed a lot of good stuff considering its size.
The price is very reasonable too, considering these thin things are normally priced in the stratosphere.

From what I can tell:
18.8 mm thick / 1.168 kg
13.4 inch screen (ultra bright?)
Intel Core 2 Duo mobile SU7300 (uses less than 10w?)
2GB DDR3 RAM
2.5" 5400RPM SATA Drive
VGA, HDMI, USB, e-SATA ports
Lithium Polymer - 6 hr battery life
without a cd burner it cant be called a laptop, dont even bring air into the arguement
It's not much of an argument if neither of you can breath.
This thing is 1cm thicker than the macbook air, so it's no all that thin, but it atleast it's more afforable.
macbook air = 19.3mm
this = 18.8mm
where did you get that 1cm from?
Article says it is 3.2cm thick.
@youngstunna FYI, the giant Gundam was built by the Japanese. Haier is a Chinese company. :)
Since when is 1.25" considered ultra-thin? You can stack two macbook airs and still be thinner than this. The regular macbooks are 0.95" thick; even the Dell Studio XPS is 0.85" to 1.34" thick and comes better equipped for $130 more.
18.8mm = 0.74"
The problem isn't unit conversion; it's that the linked-to article says 3.2 cm.
Thanks TomTom2007 (who posted 10 minutes after me) for finding a better article.
The article suggests that the hardware costs 6,000 yuan, not that the laptop will retail for 6,000 yuan.
Right you are. I'm expecting a few hundred more for a profit. Then again, it is China and if they sell for a few dollars profit and able to nab just 1% of their population, that's a nice chunk of change, without including exports.
Why is slim and thin always sexy? Won't anyone find a 6in. thick laptop desirable?
Even Steve Jobs is as slim as his macbooks nowadays, does anyone find him sexy?
Sincerely hope he recovers soon.
Indeed.
"Recover soon" as in not like Patrick Swayze.
it was never about thickness. it was more about weight.
they did make a 6inches laptop in 1980, it weighted 20lbs.
a 1 inch laptop now is about 5lbs. you choose.
battery life is probably a turn off
No, it's a common misconception that battery life and turn off are the same thing, while in fact, turn off comes AFTER battery life ends.
@10minutehobo
dont be ridiculous. you know what he meant to say.
