Dell leaks revamped Alienware m15x, Core i7 confirmed
We're expecting an announcement later today but the Alienware m15x has already been leaked in a trio of Dell service documents. Updates include a Core i7 processor, 15.6-inch 1920x1080 LED backlit display, a full 8GB of 1333MHz DDR3 memory, options for a traditional hard disk or SSD drive of unspecified capacity, a 2 megapixel webcam, Blu-ray disc option, Firewire, 3x USB, 1x eSATA, ExpressCard and 8-in-1 card reader slots, an optional 9-cell 86Wh battery, and DisplayPort and VGA outputs among other notables. It also features the same aggressive styling of its bigger dual-GPU M17x sib. What we don't see is any mention of its graphics. Will it be dual-GPU, too? Doubtful, but check in later to find out.

Eeek! That looks horrid....
yes, disgusting. i was hoping to a decent core i7 from dell. I guess the HP Envy 15 is still the top of my list.
Nice! I hope it's single GPU...
I hope it doesn't look 'too' like the m17x, as I'm not a fan of the overly aggresive styling.
Dual GPU isn't essential. With a 15-inch you're after portability in some form, so you should be willing to compromise in some respects over the less portable 17-inchers.
On page 67 of the manual you can see instructions on how to remove the graphics card - so it obviously has discreet graphics.
Were you questioning its discreet graphics capabilities before you read the manual? I think you forget who makes this machine...
But the question Engadget is asking is "is it Dual-GPU?". Probably not, the images and wordage in the manual suggest a lack of dual-GPU capabilities.
Unlike Apple who has their rservice manuals on a secure site , Dell makes their service manuals publically available-strange!
This openness would make me buy a Dell over an Apple on this point alone.
Dell needs a single-GPU gaming solution - even the hot single GPUs are somewhat portable, but dual GPUs require so much battery and cooling they become barely transportable. Hopefully this will have the M17X and Precision line's good build quality. too bad they didn't plop in the 1640's RGB LED screen - it's not that useful for gaming, but computers are rarely single purpose anyways.
Couldn't agree with you more, this machine needs to be high quality.
I have a Dell 1520, and as if the plastics weren't cheap enough already, I have had all the plastics replaced due to cracks and expanding. Now my display bezel has developed a crack, which i discovered hours ago.
Not to mention all of the software problems, my lappy has been a horrid experience for me. Let's hope this isn't the same way, I am in the market for a new laptop, and if this is inexpensive enough, I may just buy it. I play tons of games on my 1520 (CS:S, HL2, TF2, WoW hell, it'll even run Crysis), so this should be a nice pick.
Yeah, a single GPU gaming rig would be a nice one.And considering that the quality of the M17x is way better than the iriginal M15x, I'm really hoping it's gonna be a solid machine.
Look at that bezel! YUCK!
So who will win? Dell or HP?
I think HP hit the spot with their Envy 15 here http://hpfansite.com/hp-envy/hp-envy-13-hp-envy-15-official because the Alienware here looks terribly bulky (though without doubt, sexier)
Personally, I'd go with the HP simply because the Alienware case designs are just so unbelievably hideous. "Aggressive styling" just seems to be another way of saying "designed by a 5-year old". "The Fast & The Furious" continues to have a lot to answer for...
I don't see the new Envy 13/15 as a competitor to the Alienware M15X/17X series at all. In price, size and function the new HPs are much closer to the XPS Studio 13/16 series. The new M15X after all, is a 9-pound monster and the Envy 15 is a 5.2ib upscale.
Just because they both took brand names from boutique gaming brands doesn't make them competitors at all - in fact, I think HP watered down the Envy name way too much for something that could easily be handled by a HP line.
As for design, I like the Envys but I don't think sleek is the only way to go; it's getting rather boring, in fact. I don't think Alienware is hideous for being different.
Dell is horrible at keeping secrets.
Is it a bus?
It's a train!
No! It's the M15x!
Some German showed this one:

M15x?
If this - and it should - is as good as the M17x i have in my bag, it will be a great computer !!
Alienware design is strong, you love it or you hate it. That only make this computer apart. Of course the specifications are great, including build quality which are far from what Asus/Acer/HP/Lenovo/etc. produce today. This has a price, but as i own the big brother of this M15X, all i can tell after 3 months of use is that i would do the same choice again with no hesitation.
Can't wait to se their new desktop line too...
