Ready for some fireworks? Good. Intel's
just-announced Clarksfield processor -- which was
accurately rumored for a September launch way back in July -- is landing in Dell's lineup in a big way. The refreshed
Studio 15 and
Studio 17 will both be sold with an available Core i7 720QM or Core i7 820QM, as will the gamer-centric
Studio XPS 16. As a reminder, the former checks in at 1.6GHz with a 1,333MHz FSB and 6MB of L3 cache, while the latter hums along at 1.73GHz. The Studio 17 is also seeing a few non-CPU related updates, with a JBL-sourced 2.1 audio system, optional 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 and support for dual HDDs. Outside of that, most everything else on these rigs is just as it was yesterday, though consumers interested in snagging one with a shiny new chip should take note of the price points. The Core i7'd Studio 15 gets going at $999, while the 17.3-inch sibling starts at $1,099 and the Studio XPS 16 (available today, or so says Dell) at $1,249.

still core 2 duo...engadget...
can you check it first :(
Yep still says C2D on their page.
Here's the Studio link:
http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/core_i7_systems/fs.aspx?refid=core_i7_systems&s=dhs&cs=19
Can't find the one for the XPS though.
Looks like the middle one is the sweet spot... 1100 for some nice tech. Im giddy.
Wow this seems pretty cheap, considering it has been billed as a super high end processor. Any reviews yet of the 720QM performance? And I hate to be that guy, but any idea if this is coming to the Macbook Pros soon?
I wouldn't mind one of these
Still Core 2 Duo...
Boy, they are really throwing around the core i7 "sauce" today.
Falsch!
The coolest part is the FSB on these C2D are coming up dramatically.
My Lenovo LT is still really respectable w/ a 'Centrino' (C2D) 2.0 but only 866 FSB =(
maybe they're not officially selling it yet?
but if anyone's not sure about what the xps 16 is, here's a link

Still C2D - WTF Engadget I was going to order one!
I wouldn't classify the XPS Studio 1640. Since the Alienware acquisition Dell repositioned the XPS like to be simply a premium series; the portable XPS Studio 13 is also an XPS. The fact that the 1640 has a mid-range Radeon 4670 (and that's the max) and a high resolution RGB LED screen point more towards a general entertainment and media machine, unlike the Alienwares, which are really gaming focused.
liesssssssssssssssssss, got my credit card ready too!
this is what i feel like engadget http://pix99.net/1_82-pix.html
Thanks alot!!
@mike yea me too man, i was going to order a xps 16, but now with i7 hell yea!
This site even got screenshot of it.
http://www.itechnews.net/2009/08/31/dell-studio-xps-16-to-get-core-i7-820qm/
I hope they bump up the graphics chip too. I would get the m15x, but at 2 inches thick, I'm not sure. A Studio XPS 16 with a 240/260M and a Core i7 would be perfect!
Looks like they're up, but amazingly, no way to select or view what GPU is in it? WTF?
Should I be upset if I bought one in July? Because I'm not.
JBL audio is kinda cool. So is the ATI card, but honestly I doubt I would have got the ATI card anyways.
Apple, your turn.
Hopefully Apple will shoehorn these into an iMac refresh next month...
::glares at Arrandale::
Hmmm interesting... I knew these clock speeds were going to be lower, but I wasn't expecting them to be that much lower.
Here you go Engadget:

come on Dell UK!!! I can't wait for you to update and charge double what US prices are!!!
I'm waiting on the 2Ghz i7. If I'm going to blow a ton o cash it may as well be on the top of the line CPU. Hopefully this CPU will be an option in the coming months....if nothing else I would LOVE to see this make its way into the next Precision M6xxx mobile workstation.
But really Dell, I don't mind... just update the UK site...
1.6 CPU? Think I'd pass for now, better to just get a cheaper 2.5/2.8 C2D for the same price.
Clock speed doesn't mean shit. Plus the i7's are quad, not dual.
I know the difference between two and four cores. The point is unless you have multi-threaded apps ready to use all four cores at the same time it's still better to have two faster cores.
Jebus. Its like people can't use their damn brain before posting. The CPU shuts off 1-3 cores and scales the CPU up to 2.8Ghz depending on what you are doing. The only time it will hit 1.6 is if all 4 cores are going full tilt which will only occur if you are ripping something or in the event you have something that can handle more cores which is starting to become more and more common. Win 7 alone uses parrallel processing on boot to drastically decrease boot time.
Is it so much to ask that people read and understand the tech before making a comment?
Wow and then I looked like a tool... +1 to you. (sulks and hides in shame)
Here's a Stats Chart for all the products launched today:

Also, all of the http://bit.ly/Clarksfield processors & http://bit.ly/PM55chipset listed seperately...
Hope it helps!
i still dont see the i7 on xps studio 16
I wish they would offer NVidia as an option on the Studio line. A Studio 17 with an NVidia 2*0 card and 1080p resolution screen (screw 900p) and this CPU would have been perfect.
I doubt its going to happen anytime soon. Dell is pretty gun shy when it comes to Nvidia after that cluster fuck last year with the bad GPU's Nvidia put out. They are still having huge issues with these GPU's in the 1330 series.
Its less of an issue since ATI's latest GPU's are kicking ass and taking names.
I've updated Anne Camden's Direct2Dell blog post that covers these new i7 Dell laptops with the link to the i7 page: http://bit.ly/DE4Je
Thanks,
@LionelatDell
I hope they fixed the Audio on the Studio. The sound on the previous model was "Abismal!!" I had to send mine back. You'd expect more if you're touting it a Mobile Media Powerhouse. Means nothing if the Audio doesn't sound great! It was low, snap, crackle & pop. I even went with another driver and I still wasn't impressed. I can't wait for the review. I'll do the full review if engadget sends me the laptop :). Then I can compare the older model to this newer one.
So when are they going to refresh the Studio XPS 13 line? The Studio XPS 16 was updated twice within the past month but the Studio XPS 13 has been untouched since January.
Ok, what about those intel 32 nm processors, I have heard recently some will be in Notebooks by the the end of the year but mass production starts 2010 is this true? I have also read they won't be in notebooks at all until 2010. which is it?
some this year? most next year?
None this year? All next year
Wait I have a DELL Studio 17 with RGB LED, So wheres the new Studio 17 with RGB LED Display, Why has DELL abandoned its best selling option, and now only offers it on the 17" Workstations and the XPS 16???? What gives
Not even on the Alienware 17 or the new Studio 17? Was there some problem?
Everyone wants RGB LED. There are only so many to go around in the industry. When you see a component disappear from a product line its usually due to parts shortage.
Why is the i7 paired with a low-end gpu in the studio 15 and 17???? They could have put at least a hd 4670 or 4850 in there...
Blame Alienware. My running theory is that dell doesn't want to cannibalize Alienware sales. Which is a shame because I think Alienware's products look like shit compared to the XPS's. IMHO Dell should have dropped the alienware mobile line when they purchased them and continued the XPS line as is. But that's just me. *shrugs*
Here's the link for the xps 16....you can get it barebones for $1010....
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=clf16test&cs=19&dgvcode=ss&c=US&l=EN&m_3=6GB2D&m_8=320GB&dgc=SS&cid=27399&lid=627062
OK I have to ask. How are people getting to this page? Is it some super top secret link? Because when you go through Dell's homepage and select XPS 16 it doesn't have the i7 option.
Yeah whats up with a 400$ to get 2 gb more of memory!
Hmm...anyone notice you can't select a Blu-ray player with these chips? Asking for a 1.83Ghz or higher clock speed?? Hopefully that's a site error....
Note that is says Celeron Processor....Pretty sure that is a bug.
SSD anyone? C'mon Dell --- SSD should be an option in every model.
I absolutely love the Studio series for development. I've owned a ton of laptops over the years and this has been by far the best experience. I'm was actually thinking of getting the even lighter-weight 14z, but now I'm thinking more power would be better.
