Sky TV arriving on Xbox 360 in mid-October according to SkyMag; Twitter, Facebook & Zune to follow?
Live Sky TV viewing via Xbox 360 didn't make it into the most recent dashboard update, readers report page 17 of the network's most recent SkyMag indicates it will arrive around mid-October. Additional details flesh out what's available, while all Xbox Live Gold members (in the appropriate areas) will get access to the Sky Player similar to the PC implementation, you will need a Sky subscription with the appropriate channels to view sports and movie content. Look out for more updates at the skyplayer.com/xbox360 site, while those of us beyond the network's reach wonder whether we can expect other features like Twitter (you're following us, right?) Facebook and 1080p instant-on movie streaming to arrive at roughly the same time.

Damn. I was hoping to access sports on a pay-per-view basis. On the PC SkyPlayer it's £35 per month to get the sports content, and I'm just not going to watch it that much to justify that amount.

The only thing that is an epic failure around here is you're comment. Try reading the article before you make yourself look stupid.
How much do I have to pay for PORNO round the clock?
Then Microsoft can overcharge for the official Xbox360 lotion dispenser.
Do this for PS3 too please, BSkyB. My HDTV upstairs can't find Sky, but my old analogue could.
Won't happen. Sky and Microsoft have a deal. Only way you'll get sky is if that deal ends or breaks.
@Kris120890
Of course it could happen, Sony and Sky have had a business relationship before Sky + MS. Its called GO View, Sky TV shows on your PSP.
The real question is will Sony add support for Silverlight on the PS3 thats the only thing stopping it happening, theres no exclusivity here only lack of functionality and seeing as MS make Silverlight its pretty obvious why the Sky player is on the Xbox first.
Why does MS charge a monthly fee (gold) for yes another thing which is free on PC? First online play, then Netflix, now this.
If the model in GB is the same as the US, the TV stations get money through advertising and money paid to the broadcasters by the cable company (when you pay your cable bill, a portion goes to the broadcaster). If you watch on a PC, I assume they also have ads in the HTML.
For the 360 there are bandwith costs, and they are a business so they need to make a profit or they will be forced to shut down the service.
There are bandwidth costs either way.
If it's like Netflix, then there are no ads when you watch it on PC or any other streaming device and there are no ads when you watch it on Xbox 360. When you watch it on PC or another streamer, it's free, covered by your Netflix subscription costs. When you watch it on Xbox 360 you have to pay MS in addition to paying Netflix.
Why is online play free on PC and not on 360?
Why is Netflix streaming free on PC (or other streaming devices) and not on 360?
Why is facebook free on PC and not on 360?
But Microsoft is supplying the bandwith, not the broadcaster - the broadcaster has additional ads online, and we know how much people would complain if MS had an ad on LIVE. Same with Netflix, if Netflix were to subsidize MS's bandwith costs, their costs to build the code into the 360, etc. then maybe you would not need to pay for it.
As for the costs of online gaming, think of it this way: EA has, in the past, shut down servers of online games that are no longer the current version. SONY can get away with it because they do not operate the game servers, the game publishers do (obviously they operate the games they produce). Since games are operated on MS servers, and the online is simply a protocol to allow you to access other users, as long as LIVE is still in production you will never lose online access. You are accessing their servers, their bandwith, etc. and that all costs money.Yes, a game on PSN costs money to run, but they can keep the servers online for only a few years, using the money paid for the game to subsidize the server, and then taken offline when it no longer makes sense financially. SONY is hosting data on their servers, but they are paid for the data (game publishers pay SONY to host their game demos, and if you download a movie you are paying for that movie), so they are getting paid, it is they are taking the money from the publisher rather than the user. The only real argument should be why the publishers are not charging less for a game being they are not paying for the extras, the user is.
More or less, it comes down to Facebook, Netflix, and online PC gaming is paid for by Facebook by developing the web app and bandwith, Netflix by developing the WMC plug-ins and providing the bandwith, and the PC game manufacturer for running the servers and supplying bandwith. For the 360, MS is writing the Facebook app, they are writing the Netflix app, they are running the online servers, they are paying for the bandwith, etc.
1. Sony does operate game servers. Games like Killzone 2 have dedicated servers that run the games. While on Live, the games run on one of your own consoles. They absolutely do not run on Live servers. The Live servers only coordinate game setup, like gamespy or PSN, both of which are free.
2. If MS is providing the bandwidth, they should stop. Because AGAIN, if I use a PC or a separate streamer box for these services, I still don't pay and there's zero question who is providing the bandwidth there.
3. EA has shut down servers for Live games too.
http://www.ausgamers.com/news/read/2456814
4. What do you mean how people would complain IF Live had ads on it? 60% of the stuff on the dashboard is ads. Even if you pay for Gold.
You are greatly confused about the current situation. Microsoft takes advantage of this.
Just explain one thing.
If I can stream a movie from Netflix to my PC or dedicated streaming box (one-time cost of about $60) without paying additional charges, why can it not be done to my Xbox 360 without paying additional charges? Neither shows more ads than the other. Both are HD and identical quality.
How is this MS not just taking advantage of a captive audience (captive because they ban all internet connectivity on Xbox and 360 that isn't through Live)?
Just a small point, I would much rather pay per month for XBL then get matched up with 109018239809809 modders.
If Xbox Live was free during the darker days of Halo 2 modding, you wouldn't be able to get in a game without getting matched up with modders who just create new accounts every 2 minutes.
1) THat is why I said protocols. There is game matchmaking, etc. Yes, individual games run on 360s, but the coordination is done by LIVE. And that is whey a game can never be taken offline - as long as LIVE is running, the protocols will always be there. Being KZ is a SONY game, I would expect SONY to run the server.
2) If they should stop paying for bandwith, then how do you expect the data to be delivered? I don't think it is unreasonable for Netflix to offer a cheaper plan for the 360.
3) LIVE is built so that they handle the servers, but game companies can, if they wish, operate their own servers. If they keep their serving on the LIVE servers, then they will not go down as long as LIVE is a product. Also note that this kind of ruins the argument that everything is handled on individual 360s, not MS servers - if all live provided is match making, taking a server offline like EA did would not be an issue. Also note that all those XBOX listings are just that - XBOX, not XBOX 360. They changed how servers are managed on LIVE for the 360.
4) I just fired up my 360, the only ads I can find are ads for "Hey, we are giving away free stuff", "Hey, tonight is a ODST all nighter", etc. I do not see any "Buy a GE refrigerator" ads anywhere.
I already answered your question, so agan: Because when you watch on your PC, Netflix is paying to serve up the data. When you are watching on a 360, MS is paying to serve up the data, but they also have the costs of electricity to run the servers, the cost of the servers, the cost of people to run those servers, the cost of writing the viewing application, etc. As I wrote, I think that Netflix should have a lower 360 subscription fee (blocking you from watching on a PC if you buy that tier), or put it on Silver and MS should get paid to host the data, but that is Netflix's decision, not Microsoft's, and Microsoft should not be giving it away for free (or I, as a stock holder, would be upset).
No, you didn't answer my question. If MS is serving the movie to me, then Netflix isn't. Then where is that money going that Netflix would otherwise be putting out to stream to me (at no additional charge) if I used my PC or a decicated streaming device? Like I said, if MS is providing the bandwidth they should stop, because Netflix provides it and doesn't feel they must charge me for it.
1. Halo is an MS game, they don't run any servers. Same with Gears. Those games run on your Xbox. Live only provides matchmaking, which other systems (like gamespy or PSN) do for free. Why does MS have to charge me to set up games when others don't?
2. Netflix doesn't offer a cheaper plan for 360. The cost of streaming to 360 is the cost of streaming to anything else, plus the Gold costs. Put on Silver? That's a great idea. That's what I'm saying. It shouldn't cost any more to stream to a 360 than anything else.
3. Live for Xbox cost money, just like Live for Xbox 360 costs money. So how is taking down Xbox games different from taking down 360 games? You aren't paying for the servers with Live, you're just lining MS' pockets.
'Also note that this kind of ruins the argument that everything is handled on individual 360s, not MS servers' - I said the GAME runs on individual 360s, not "everything".

Friends:

Events: kinda all ads, kinda not ads.
Welcome:
no ads
Ooh, next time around, now the spotlight shows a Wendys ad. And a Red Faction ad.
So, let's count it.
12 ads out of 14 in Spotlight.
10 out of 11 ads in Video marketplace (I'm ignoring the first item, it's kinda an ad, kinda not)
7 of 8 ads in Games marketplace. (again, ignoring first item, even though it's a link to buy stuff and 5 ads)
0 of 9 in my xbox
0 of 4 in welcome
Ignoring events, since they're all ads, especially if you don't have gold.
So that's 29 ads out of 48 panels. At the top level. That's a lot of ads.
LS, you are just ignoring my answer. For a third time: MS supplies the bandwith, Netflix should be giving a discount on the service. It is not up to you to decide who provides the bandwith, that is the deal MS and Netflix decided upon. If you don't like it, then complain to Netflix for not having a lower cost because they are not serving the bandwith. MS provides the service, Netflix is using that service.
1) You yourself said that they need servers for matchmaking, now you are saying that they don't need servers. Which is it?
2) I know they should. I was the one who suggested Netflix should provide a discount.
3) Microsoft tells game companies that they should use their servers. If a company decides that they know better, how is that MS' fault? Games that do things the way they should will not have this issue. But again, is this not in conflict with your belief that all the LIVE service does is matchmaking? If all LIVE does is matchmaking and everything else is done on a P2P basis, then removing a server should have no effect - in fact, 3rd party servers would not be needed.
4) You are trying hard to try to prove me wrong, aren't you? But let's look at some of what you said are ads:
Natal - what are they selling? Natal has not shipped yet, so it cannot be an ad.
Forza 3 - so offering you free content like a demo is an ad?
ODST Survival and combat - So a free video to help those who have the game is an ad?
I am going to stop there because looking through your list, you are redifing what an advertisement is. If it is something you want, it is an ad, but something you don't want is an ad? Using the ODST example, people who do have the game and want tips on how to play, or those who don't have the game but want to check it out should not be able to see that option because LS has decided it is an ad and he paid for gold, so it should be hidden? I am looking at the South Park collection now. If it was just an image that said "Watch South Park on Comedy Central" and nothing else, I would not like it. If I was forced to watch it before I could play a new game, I would not like it. But when they are showing off new arrivals, telling me about free stuff on the service, that is part of what a device like this is about. Hell, my iPhone, which I pay $70 a month for is littered with ads if we are using your definition.
Something I just tried: I started up my PS3 (first time in months). I have never played a game on my PS3, let alone an online game. I never installed Home. The only thing I have done is download updates so I can watch BRD movies. Since I got my standalone player, I don't use the PS3. And yet, there are ads scattered all over their market place. Why should I be forced to watch these ads? I paid good money for my PS3 (a 60GB bought a week after release, so it was $600) and I am forced to see these ads. I demand they stop forcing me to watch them. I also demand that they put functionality in their player to allow me to skip over all the ads (trailers, that anti-piracy clip, all the games they start when I put in a movie such as POTC, etc.) that start when I play a movie. This is unacceptable and they need to stop it! Downloading all that stuff of the network is chewing up my bandwith, making me pay for it!
And when I go to a friend's place who does use his PS3 for games, whenever he starts up his PS3 and navigates through the XMB, if he moves over a gam it changes the background to a picture for the game, I am offended because that is an advertisement directed towards me, trying to buy that game. They need to stop it. I don't want any of their ads!
I am not ignoring you. I said if MS is providing the bandwidth, THEY SHOULD STOP. Because to any other device, it comes from Netflix and it works fine. If MS takes on an additional cost to them for no reason and passes it on to us, they're just crummy businessmen. How about this?
http://blog.netflix.com/2008/12/streaming-performance.html
Why did MS and Roku streaming boxes at the same time if they use different servers? There's a much more straightforward explanation, which is that Netflix is providing the bandwidth, just like when you stream to PC or to dedicated streamers like Roku. MS is just charging you an extra fee because they can, just like with gaming with your friends, just like with Sky TV (it appears). Just like with Facebook.
1. I said that the MS servers are only used to get you into games (you can call that matchmaking if you would like, as I did, even though it really isn't, it's more lobby service). This is the same service PSN provides for free. It's the same service that was pioneered FOR FREE by gamespy on the PC. Why does MS have to charge for it? The games themselves run on your 360 on the PS3 they might run on your PS3, they might run on dedicated servers.
2. There's no credit given for things that haven't happened. It's just a dream right now.
3. As I said above, the game servers get you into the game, you can call that matchmaking if you would like. If there is no server to provide lobby services and connect you to other people, then you can't start a game unless the game has an option to enter IP addresses of people to play with directly, and MS forbids that, so the game is unusable online after the servers are down. As to what if companies choose to run their own servers? Well, if they are, why am I paying MS? So I pay MS monthly so I can play any game I want, and then I can't because the games went down at the same time as on other platforms.
4. You can't have an ad for what isn't out yet? That's funny, I saw ads this summer for fall TV shows. They weren't ads then? How about the ad I saw for Modern Warfare 2 in a theater a month before it came out? That's not an ad because it isn't out yet?
Forza 3: Yes. It's an ad. It is there to entice me to buy the game. That's what ads do. Also, I can't get the free content, as I don't have Gold. If you click on that, it goes to an offer of the demo (and then asks me to pay for Gold to get it), an offer of a video, which is itself an ad, trying to entice me to buy the game. The other two items are offers to buy stuff a premium theme and items for my avatar. How do you have difficulty understanding that this is an ad?
ODST: that's there to entice me to buy the game. Again, that's what ads do.
I love how you stop at an item saying 'shop for an avatar' and say I'm trying to redefine what an ad is. How is something there for VISA not an ad? For T-Mobile? The South Park Collection is trying to sell me the South Park collection! How can you say "free stuff" right after mentioning the South Park Collection? If you click it, it says "Buy standard definition for 640 pts or high definition for 960 pts". That's NOT free stuff. I left out the entire upcoming events thing since some might thing it's free stuff. But a VISA ad? That's an ad. You click on it and it shows a full screen ad! NBA Draft combine? Click it and it says "buy for 400 pts". How is that not an ad? Trials HD item? Click on it and it says "buy for 1200 pts". That's an ad. "Three new arcade hits"? You click on it and every item after it is an item you click on and it says "Buy for 400pts (or whatever price)". That's an ad.
No, the problem here is you are in denial about what an ad is. If it enticing you to give them something of value (typically money) for a product or service, it is an ad. Yes, sometimes it is free stuff, but it's still an ad.
The iPhone as shipped doesn't have any ads on the main page, but yes, the entire app store is an enticement to buy stuff, and so yes, that makes it ads. If Apple updated the phone OS so that they could push ads directly to the main page on my phone, would I rejoice? Hell no.
Right now, on the Xbox 360, click on every pane you see, and see how many go straight to a "buy" item or go to another list of buy items. Then come back and tell me those panes are useful for anything buy selling you stuff. Then add in the items that go to promotional movies. The NXE is mostly ads, even if you pay for Live. But let's forget the idea of "mostly" you said that MS would be in big trouble if any ads appeared on Live. So, defend your position that there are no ads on Live. How is an item from VISA, Wendy's, T-Mobile or Sprint not an ad?
@NohOne....Dude...you can advertise something before it comes out...
Movies and Cars are just 2 things that are Advertised before they come out...
YES a Free Demo is an advertisement....as is a Free Theme...they are all forms of Marketing..
LS, I can understand how you can say that some of those are ads, I don't agree being they are saying "here is some free stuff, sponsored by ...", but I can understand how you can say it is an ad. Free videos showing how somebody can play a game better is not an ad - and we will just need to disagree. As for Netflix, that is for them to handle the reducing any cost because MS is handling the bandwith. There could be many reasons why it is done this way; I seriously doubt Netflix has the infrastructure in place to handle as much data as MS can. When movies (not Netflix, just movies) on the 360 was first announced the service was overrun and was slow, MS has some of the largest datacenters in the world, and if they had problems I don't believe Netflix would have been able to keep up, so it could be a making sure MS controlls the experience.
Chris: If they had a big image saying "Natal, only $X avalible on Y/Z/2010", then yes, it would be an ad. Saying "Here are some new stuff we are working on we think you may like" is not an ad, it is just being open with their customers.
I think it's funny when people think they will better prove their point with longer posts.

Yeah so. We knew about the deal ages ago back at E3 (I Think)
Settle down, just pointing it out for those that didn't know. Personally I don't care about it as I don't care for Sky and I dont own a 360
if someone didn't know, they would by have reading the article that you posted this comment on. -.-"
I was referring to the fact that it was on the official site :)
What a surprise. Sky want shitloads of money. I wish they could have done a better deal with virgin media instead. £30-£40 for sports is just stupid. Will normal programming be free or will they be wanting subscriptions for that as well.
I would HOPE they would try to get the Zune on a GLOBAL SCALE some way....I mean how else are they going to plan on taking it to Apple in the MP3/PMP field??
I still dont get why they are making you have GOLD so you can use things that are FREE on PC...pretty rip-offish to me...
Are we talking about multiplayer/online or sky in general.
I havent gotten over the whole "Charging for the online experience with Live" thing even if I think that should go free just like they did for PC....(but that was cause Steam was better and free)
I'm talking about the Netflix, Twitter, Facebook, Last.FM etc that they are allowing access to ONLY if you are gold...all of that stuff I can access for FREE on my PC easily....along with sites like Raptr and gamerDNA that automatically update my Twitter and facebook already....so why not let me do it for FREE on my 360 as well
Is Netflix free? I'm in the UK so I wouldn't know. As for the others ( Facebook and twitter) I think they're just in there to try to justify the gold Membership fee. I wish they would add more justification for that fee or at least Lower the price. If we could get free sports and movie for free then the gold price would be understandable.
thats all they are trying to do is further justify the price...but when they do that it makes it look even SHITTIER in places that DONT have Nextflix, and soon to be those that don't have Zune Marketplace...
Netflix isn't free...its at least $9/month and then you can watch it on your 360 if you have a gold account that you also have to pay for. Meanwhile you can watch it on your PC at NO EXTRA COST...sure some may argue that not everyone wants to watch a movie on their PC...well most of us on here are nerds and know enough about computer to know how to hook one up to a TV, I have a PC in my Bedroom connected to a 24" LCD Monitor as well as a 32" LCDTV....and I watch Netflix via Media Center on it all the time, and I'm working on an HTPC for the living room...that will allow me to do the same thing. Getting past all that PC Stuff its only a matter of time before Netflix is on the Wii and PS3, Netflix CEO came out and that that earlier this week. When that happens thats going to make that "perk of being gold" look even shittier.....even if it cost a 1 time fee of $10....its still a lot less that the money you would be paying to be gold for the next 'X' amount of years
Why should they offer Facebook, Twitter, and Last.fm for free? They code the apps so they work on the xbox in the comfort of your living room while setting on your couch, they should get some money for that. Add last I checked there are adds in facebook, twitter, and all over last.fm. Why do you think they are free to you? Its not because they are doing you a huge favor. They saw a business and the business was..Allow people to connect to friends but display adds on every page they go to. Thats how the business model works. When they have an app that runs on things like xbox they don't have adds but facebooks still wants their money, so they charge xbox for it, who turns around and charges you for it. You people are getting a service provided to you so stop complaining. Even if you get it for free on your computer, they are charging someone. Don't think its coming to you as a free gift that somebody isn't eating the cost for.
ummmm Twitter Doesnt Have Ads on it dude....it has yet to make a SINGLE PENNY....
as for them needing to make money off of it casuse they made it?? ummm thats a moot point, as they CHOSE to make those apps, instead of letting Facebook, twitter, or last.fm make them...the facebook and last.fm apps on my iPhone were not MADE by apple....and guess what, they are FREE....NO ADS....and if you think Facebook or Last.FM is CHARGING MS to use their sites you are mistaken....sure they are most likely getting a little something....but they arent raping them....why would they?? I mean the 360 is FULL of ads already...even WITH me being silver or gold the ads are still there.....
my point is this....Facebook may have ads on the website yes....thats not a problem at all...they arent ALL over the place like Myspace....but if I sign in to facebook via a mobile app(which is essentially what MS is putting on the 360) I see NO ADS and it cost me NOTHING...so ummm yea...go back to the drawing board dude....
oh yea...DSi has Facebook support and it cost NOTHING...and if the PS3 adds it then it will cost NOTHING as well...and once again Gold will still look like shit
I have never heard of Sky TV. I just wish they'd bring back 1 vs 100!
Because they're British.
its in the UK dude
aren't they just just doing a second season launch sometime soon?
Will this be available on XBOX Live Canada? Or will it be U.S. exclusive like netflix?
Neither. Its UK exclusive seeing how there British.
*They're
Unless you meant facebook and twitter then that's World Wide I think.
I'm just hoping I'll be able to watch sky from my flat in university, because back at home we have the full sky package.
Sky is the best premier viewing in the UK if Americans didn't know (not that you should, its not like I know how the satellite tv system works in the US either)
Do you think you can get SkyHD from this or will you still need the dedicated SkyHD box? I'm just wondering because I'd obviously enjoy having a single system for entertainment rather than 2 less complete systems.
It seems that X-Box wants to be all things to all people.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlRQYFsMg6s
I'd prefer if they didn't use the Zune brand, I don't want my Xbox Live service associated with crap.
Zune isn't Crap...and its actually a smart move to get the brand out there more...its free advertisement...

Can anyone tell me what is offered with this? There seems to be a free version and a subscription, what's the differance?
Try NOT to picture Ali G saying this.
Crap, I pressed the wrong reply button.
That's my boy Andrei Arshavin after scoring his fourth goal against Liverpool last season!
That is all.
Arsh4vin ftw
SKY is a joke, ridiculous subscription prices AND you get bombarded with adverts on top of that... shit service, that I won't pollute my 360 with!
Hello Fellow Gamers. Wow.. you guys calm down. Geez.. you'd think people have more to argue over than a mere $4 monthly fee. Everyone that has or will post here have spent more than $4 a day. So why even bother? Are some of you that damn cheap? I'll bet most of you that complain about paying for Xblive WASTE more money daily on things that aren't even needed. For instance, Like; Cigarettes, Alcohol (Beer, Liquor, Wine), Drugs (Crack, Weed, excasty, etc), Sodas (you don't need soda to live). Now add up all of that for a month. I'll bet you can buy a console or two, just on WASTED non needed items. So please STOP THE B!TCHING about Xblive $4.monthly fee. either you're going to pay or not.
Now back to the Sub @ hand. Ok.. Sky just want a piece of the M$ pie. Wouldn't you want a piece also?
Funny, the guy on the picture is Arshavin, Russian national soccer player. :)
