In a welcome reversal of trends, Samsung just stuffed a 3G cellphone into a 12 megapixel camera making this M8920 / SCH-W880 more of a camera than most
12 megapixel cameraphones can claim. While this presumed follow-up to Samsung's
Pixon 12 (M8910) isn't official, the announcement looks imminent based on the leaked collateral above and the spyshots that emerged over the weekend. What's impressive here is that extending 3x optical zoom -- something carried over from the
SCH-B600 -- and dedicated camera controls like a mode dial, shutter and zoom, and big 3.3-inch WVGA AMOLED display. Rounding out the specs are HD (720p presumably) video, HSDPA data, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, microSD slot, and DMB mobile television; that latter spec making this Korea-only whenever it does launch. See her in the wild after the break.

Korea-only? Gah...
"Samsung just stuffed a 3G cellphone into a 12 megapixel camera" - and about time too. Would be nice to replace my go everywhere digital camera and my everpresent mobile with a single device, especially if geotagging is in the offing.
I, for one, would love to see more phameras (camones?) with a format like this.
I agree, I would love to have a real camera in my smartphone (or a real smartphone in my camera), but the sad truth is that while this thing may be an awesome camera (maybe) it will not be a smartphone substitute , obliging one to carry 2 devices anyway.
Now if Samsung would stick this optics on the Omnia pro and make it run , let's say, Android, I would probably book a fight to Korea just to buy one.
Yep. Still awaiting the ULTIMATE DEVICE.
So now we have a good camera in a boring phone.
And Garmin doing a good GPS in a boring phone.
Someone, somewhere has to collect all the bits together and make the single device that does everything. Camera, phone, GPS, media player, Internet portal, pocket computer. With a good large touch screen + real keyboard.
Do it all.
The Real God Phone.
This looks awesome. Really awesome.
How about they just make a 3.2-8 MP camera phone that takes "good" pictures!
12MP is great but imagine sending those pictures through 3G!
I know reading comprehension is bad for you but see this part:
"Samsung just stuffed a 3G cellphone into a 12 megapixel camera making this M8920 / SCH-W880 more of a camera than most 12 megapixel cameraphones can claim".
This means that instead of making a sensor that can fit in a phone, the put a phone in one of their cameras, meaning this is a camera with a 3g antennae in it.
Stop sounding off points based on the crap that everyone else says and learn to form your own opinions ok?
Your point?
Sorry, but you forgot to express your opinion.
Here's a crazy idea: how about you resize the pictures before you send?
And here is another crazy idea :to take a 2megapixel photo.
Here's a crazier idea. Most smartphones automatically resize pictures for you
Very cool and you get to see your photos on an amoled screen too.
Love the optical zoom, wonder why more manufacturers don't have it, especially the type that doesn't have a telescopic zoom like most Sony Cybershots?
Bring it out in Europe please Samsung...
Optical zoom necessarily operates by changing the distance between optical elements in the camera, so it requires a lot of mechanical parts and some space. Those Cybershots slim down by moving the extending/retracting elements inside the camera, but they're still in there. People don't like carrying large phones.
Well those Sony cameras are very small, so a phone with the same camera lens would be small too.
Those Sony Cybershots are small because they really pack the electronics. You can't just take a Sony Cybershot with it's mechanical optics and just pack a good phone in there with a big screen not expecting to change it's size. It will be a big phone. Now, I'm sure you can take a dinky microprocessor and EDGE radio, making it a dumbphone with a really great camera. But nobody would use that because that because the phone would be generic.
Those cameras use what is called "folding optics". Basically the only thing you see externally is a prism. This redirects light into the optical assembly which usually runs the height of the camera (with the sensor lying more or less on the bottom). So even though you don't see all that it does take up a fair bit of room.
at last! they should have done this like years ago!
Sounds good to me. The only feature I use on a phone is the camera. My only concern would be the size, which looks a little clunky.
"The only feature I use on a phone is the camera."
Then wouldn't it make more sense for you to just carry a camera??
I wondered if someone would make that comment. :-P
Anyway, I like my phone as a phone more than anything, so making sacrifices in battery life and size for the ability to surf the net and have push e-mail does not make sense. I have always just wanted a good slim camera phone.
Then buy a camera?
Damn, I know I should have refreshed before replying...
PENTAX, Canon, Olympus still > w880.
Even if you say the more MP you gets the more pixels and less noise, your digital lens is still incomparable to that of a real camera.
So for all the Pixon nerds saying "it's too much of a hassle to carry around a camera and a phone", please get over yourself. We've been doing it for 30+ years...
I have been asking for this type of phone for a long time, I would love to combine a good compact camera with a phone. Yes it is hassle carrying 2 devices, I have 2 pockets, one for my phone and the other pocket for stuff that will scratch my phone... It is also hassle potentially requiring 2 different chargers, monitoring the battery on 2 different devices and possibly having 2 different formats of memory card and 2 different usb cables.
This is why I have an i8910 which is the best camera phone until the satio and pixon12 (current sony cybershots are too slow...) are released... Will probably get that Samsung w880 as soon as I can.
What kind of phone did we lug around 30 years ago?
a very big one!

we were around 30 years ago?
Well, that's one beautiful image of Old San Juan. Love how manufacturers at least like how Puerto Rico looks… but, dammit, release one of these phones here already!
I like where this going. all I need now is Android. :)
NO
this phone HAS android on it.

I have nothing against android but pls stop saying "put android in it" in every article about a phone.Android wont make a crappy phone better and its definitely not a universal solution to everything.
I thought a free and open source OS would make phones cheaper and more accessible but i did not see that happen so wots the the big deal about android??.Its just like any other OS around with its own pros and cons.
Well, if you want it to be a smartphone you only really have three options: 1) Android, 2) Windows Mobile, 3) Build your own OS from scratch. Considering all of the hate heaped on WM, that's out, and building your own OS is costly, time-consuming and requires developer commitment (considering apps have become such and integral part of smartphones). Android just makes sense.
wow now a camera with a built in phone ;)
Man, I just bought the i8910 HD and now this. I was pretty sure I am set for at least a year. Is there any speculation what OS this would run? S60 or WinMo?
What's the point of 12MP if the end result is posting the pics on facebook/twitpic resized to less than 0.3MP?
Finally! I've been waiting for a good phone with a good camera. Hope this starts a new trend in this direction.
Samsung proprietary crap os would be my first guess.
I bought a palm pre, bought my next phone might be android....
To bad web-os and android aren't the same thing... I think google should buy palm, and mix web-os and android... Won't make sense business wise, but it i'll make me happy.... lol...
If web-os didn't exists, im pretty sure i would of gone with an adroid device... Open source is strait-up amazing... While the pre isn't open source, it took hackers about 20 minutes to hack it, and palm is actually sporting the community... So close enough...
I can't believe they are wasting all that potential screen area with the "Any Call" logo. I imagine it could have added another 2-3 inches to the screen.
where does the film go? in the back?
Mke... Your I8910 HD has a bigger display and is so much prettier than this LUG, probably more energy efficient too. I live in Winnipeg, where there is no chance of getting either confidently compatible, and if imported... not cheaper than $1,000 ! !
It will NOT be 3G, Korea does not use GSM, they use CDMA, which is why it will be almost impossible to use the phone elsewhere.
