You know that
UMD-to-PSP Go conversion program? Ain't gonna happen. The "good will" program that would have provided free (or at least heavily discounted) digital copies of games already purchased on UMD discs has been scrapped. A spokesman for SCEA said, "We were evaluating a UMD conversion program, but due to legal and technical reasons we will not be offering the program at this time." Adding insult to injury, the PSP Go Rewards program offering 3 free games to European UMD owners will not be offered in the US. That's the bad news. The not so bad news is that 16,000 pieces of digital content will be available for the US PSP Go launch on October 1st. These include 225 downloadable games (full PSP titles, PSN exclusives, UMD legacy titles, and Minis), 2,300 films, and 13,300 television episodes. Still, not quite the "at least 300" digital games we were expecting. So US PSP owners, still planning to "upgrade?"

This won't end well...
PSP GO FUCK YOURSELF, SONY
PSP GO AWAY FROM MY POCKETBOOK.
Forget it. I'm keeping my PSP Slim and it's ready for Gran Turismo 5 PSP and that's what I'll be using it for in the next months coming. They ought to make games downloadable for the PSP but I know that's never gonna happen.
I was evaluating the purchase of the PSP Go, but due to this news story and the outlandish price, I will not be purchasing the PSP Go at this time.
exactly. this is sony trying to destroy the second hand market, scum tactics as per usual with this company but what else do you expect from the leading member of the RIAA, MPAA.

Take your conspiracy theories elsewhere, dude
dude...SOFTWARE is WAAAY DIFFERENT than Music and Movies.....
I can't Rip a Game to my game console and play on numerous consoles like I can movies and music....
So to say that its similar to music is not true at all....
Yea, nice move Sony, especially with the Fruit dudes breathing down your portable gaming neck with endless 99c App store games. You think you would have learned a lesson from getting your asses handed to you on the cell phone (and walkman) fronts. The PSP GO will be a "no go" for many who will instead keep their wallet powder dry and wait for the PSP-4k.
The deal should have been a 1 for 1 trade-in on the UMD (trade-in the UMD, get the digital copy FOR FREE or at least heavily discounted)! Just remember, there is a $199 portable touch screen device (with a cell phone attached to boot) thats all in your ass right now and the games (some as low as FREE) ain't going away anytime soon. Its not to late to right this wrong so you don't risk loosing the portable gaming market too...
@ chris d
You may want to look up how easy the old psp was to hack and how easy it was to find unlimited amounts of content (games) for free via torrents.
@chris
actually it IS the same, he's referring to the secondhand market. There are second hand markets for movies, music and games. Digital distribution removes this market, removing any "equity" you have in your purchases.
Its reasonable for people to dislike this since you are removing value from the product, and charging roughly the same for it. With a game on a disc I can lend it to a friend (legally), sell it (legally), give it away (legally), rent it (legally) none of these things can be done with digital distribution as it stands in any situation I know about.
if you were saying "this wont end well..." because you thought people would be flaming you? lol nah, this is a classic dick move on sony's part.
"We were evaluating a UMD conversion program, but due to legal and technical reasons we will not be offering the program at this time."
I know a technically easily and legal way of MAKING those backups of all the games you already bought, and most here probably knows it or at least heard of it (By a guy called Dark Alex), Sadly, it doesn't involve the PSP Go.
Sony just crapped in the face of every single to-be PSP go upgrader (i'm not one). Sony is the asshole douche of electronics and everyone knows it.
"Sony is the asshole douche of electronics and everyone knows it."
Nope. Not really. That's the first time I hear anybody say that.
Just because they made a crappy product it doesn't mean they suck. They said times and times again, that they are not trying to replace the PSP 3000. They are just GIVING you an option. All those games will still be available to the original PSP owners.
@Archon
Upgrading your PSP? Re-buy games!
Sony says "legal and technical" and means "financial".
@soul reaper(shinigami)
clearly from the looks of it . its not supposed to target the current psp users , people who are going to get a psp for the first time may want to choose that option , heck most of my friends downloaded psp games so they're mainly on the computers anyway
no i do not own one, may buy it if the price drops
"So US PSP owners, still planning to "upgrade?""
Not a chance in hell. First of all, I'll say it plain and clear, I am a Sony fanboy. But I will not re-buy games that have 5-7 hours of content to begin with when I already paid $40 for them. Sorry, not happening, no way. As a system, the PSP is incredible, however, typical of Sony, they have found a way to ruin even the best console. Man I miss the PS2 days when Sony was king. Pompous, but still king.
Ummm it IS legal reason...think for a minute....Not ALL Publishers WANT to allow for older works to simply be copied to a digital format.....I seriously doubt money has anything to do with it....Look @ MvC2...it could not have been released on Physical format becuase Marvel wouldnt have signed off on that.....Capcom said that themselves....
"Sony is the asshole douche of electronics and everyone knows it."
Lemme think for about it.... YES.
@Chris
"ALL Publishers do NOT WANT to allow for older works to simply be copied to a digital format."
Here, fixed that for you.
E.g. lawmakers offered not once a deal to RIAA/MPAA on condition that they would split costs of media from licensing costs (broken CD/DVD -> get replacement for the price of media) but they consistently rejected that. Publishers want us pay for the content (depending on media) multiple times.
Sony is no different.
dude...SOFTWARE is WAAAY DIFFERENT than Music and Movies.....
I can't Rip a Game to my game console and play on numerous consoles like I can movies and music....
So to say that its similar to music is not true at all....
"I can't Rip a Game to my game console and play on numerous consoles like I can movies and music...."
But that is precisely what PSP Go is for: instead of UMD you can now download the games.
And Sony wants upgraders pay twice.
And if you ask RIAA/MPAA reps, no, neither you can rip music/movies. You have to buy it twice/more for different devices: CD/SACD/DVD Audio/MC/MP3.
It's all over the same story when publishers introduce new media for content distribution.
Only one way this thing could sell, two words: DARK ALEX.
PSP Go......away!!!
Worst Idea EVER
dosnt everyone just hack and mod the psp anyway?
Pretty much.
I sure did. Lufia 2 bitches.
Did any of you expect anything different from Sony? Really?
How does your comment stand knowing that a Good Will program is still up in Europe? And you don't even have to mail anything in?
About the same, considering that not everybody lives in Europe. And that "not everybody" includes the majority of Sony's customers. Which makes it, as the article aptly states, insult to injury.
Yes, actually. Sony have done a great job with the PS3, and lots of us expected them to market the new PSP as aggressively. Part of that aggressive marketing is not alienating all possible customers.
New device:
- Ugly
- Expensive
- Have to re-buy all your old games
- No ability to buy to used games
- STILL nothing better than 802.11b for downloading entire freaking games, movies and tv shows
- Proprietary connector, incompatible with everything else
Old device:
- Cheap
- Hackable
- No need to re-buy any games
- Can buy used games
- Standard mini USB connector
I can't believe Sony expects this to sell.
@Archon: Probably the only reason they still have it in Europe is because they won't let Sony get away with this bullshit.
Haha... Hahaha...
(all I have to say)
Seriously Sony is screwing up big time with this. At least with the UMD you could share it with friends. This, if you buy the game on your new 'cool' PSP Go you can't do that. If you want to sell your old games on eBay for a quick buck you can't do that.
You can, not buy this product. Power is in your hands, readers!
I really like the idea of digital downloads only on a portable or on a console for that matter but dont understand why Sony is launching this device now, just doesn't make sense.
does this thing have an OLED screen?
I dunno what the incentive is for people to upgrade, those that have it hacked with CFW already had an UMD-less PSP for a while now.
Nope.
What about just not buying a PSP Go?! The customers anyway will decide if Sony can get away with that. If they do not want there new system to be "downward compatible" it is their choice. It's a stupid one of course with those millions of iPods and iPhones around. If they continue their strange marketing policies they might even ruin their whole video game biz.
And you customers - why would you want to trade in your ordinary PSP for a device that actually has nothing new or special to offer.
Please, just make Sony bleed to death. They deserve it for more than a decade now!
Never going to, until there is a 2nd nub and FLASH enabled :j
mmm till then...
My fatty, Custom fw packing M33 ultimate pocket monster that 'Only Does Everything'-mini, will suit me just fine .
A system worse than the UMD, just, wow. Somehow the old physical-copy-we-are-the-bad-guys manage to make their digital offerings more restricted, limited, expencive, cumbersome and prone to error than physical copies. If not all, pick and mix, then send out a press release like this one.
not on my dead wallet! im not looking for upgrades on it , i just want a cheaper price
Talk about your long walks off of short cliffs.
Well I was recently wondering wether or not to buy a PSP-go or 3000 and the 'Good Will' was the only thing keeping me twords the Go.....
Well Sony, just go ahead and fuck yerself. DS's anyone?!
Sony is quickly establishing a reputation for over-promising and under-delivering. If I remember right, the PS3 was originally pitched as having 2 HDMI ports. And it was backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 games. And Playstation Home was going to revolutionize the idea of online communities. And now, the good-will program for existing PSP users is suddenly ditched.
Whenever Sony announces the next game console, one would be wise to simply not believe them until it ships.
I agree. I was really looking forward to "Home" and I was always checking to see when it was available etc, but when I actually downloaded it, it was just like "erm...so now what...." - got bored within 5 mins!
Sony really have shot themselves in the foot here! Sure, a PSP Go may work for newcomers to the console, but anyone who had a normal PSP won't upgrade to it if they can't carry their games over.
I believe Sony did have the right idea, but they should have launched it with the PSP2, NOT another iteration of the current PSP platform.
I really do not understand the prevalent "I'm entitled to it" attitude that surrounds just about every article these days when it comes to consoles, handhelds, cell phones, laptops etc.. This is a new hand-held model, that they themselves said was not a replacement for the current version. So why exactly are they being assholes if they don't exchange all your games out for the new versions if you buy one of these? Have you ever heard of another manufacturer that has reissued all your games when you changed to a new model that didn't support them? They have NOT stopped making the PSP that uses the UMD based games. They have NOT left you with a pile of games that are now useless. I really cannot see why you are even complaining about "upgrading" to the PSP Go, when it is not an upgrade it is a parallel product for people that want a unit that is stripped down in features and size, for the tradeoff of being much more portable.
I don't think it's a problem with people feeling entitled, as much as it's Sony failing (yet again) to do what they said they would do. Sure, they didn't put anything in writing and they may not have made any "promises," but the implication was made that they would provide some type of upgrade path for existing users. Their continued pattern of misleading customers is what is most troubling and has caused me to take a wait-and-see approach with a once highly-respectable company.
People that want to actually play their old psp games in something that actually fits in their pocket are disappointed. Entitlement aside, no one wants to buy the same game twice.
There'd be half as much furor if Sony hadn't shot themselves in the foot by suggesting free conversion at the outset.
As to the other half, there are a ton of manufacturers/content providers trying to double, triple and quadruple dip. It's not crazy to ask someone to pay a fee for the convenience of digitization for what they've already purchased, but requiring them to flat out rebuy the game (music, movie, book, etc) is the kind of ripping off that will always piss people off. It's less about entitlement, and more about companies making it look like they're selling you a product when they're really only renting it to you.
if it were a PSP2, then i don't think it'd cause as much as an uproar as it does now.
imagine if you had the Game Boy (original) and then you had the Game Boy Pocket (which is flash based and doesn't use any cartridges). it would be somewhat similar to what Sony is doing now. the PSPGo seems to be just another iteration of the PSP platform.
so basically sony is offering one portable in two different formats (w/ UMD and w/o UMD) except they did it by releasing one, building a consumer base, and now releasing the other.
its all about licenses... i own 1 license for the game that i bought... if sony ignores this, they are ignoring your ownership of the game... its like you're renting the game from sony...
sony is even worse than apple when it comes to respecting their customers ownership of what they purchased :/ (root kit anyone?)
so my old phat psp is collecting dust, and i play games on my ipod touch... more aimed at portable games (simple pick-me-up games) and the prices are alot lower... low enough that i can look away from stuff like this.
I don't feel entitled. There should be no fee other than bandwidth of the download for a "digital" copy of a digital work, and hosting is usually pennies for a gigabyte. They're eliminating ownership, reducing distribution costs, and charging more for the device.
Unless you're new to the PSP platform, there's no reason to buy this. Even then, buying it removes all ability to purchase from the second-hand market. Sony's Minis better be freakin awesome, cause right now, they're losing on most fronts to the DS and iPod.
Also....why can't they update the PSP browser? That crap renders so slow and so poorly compared to any other comparable device, while they obviously know how to do it right (PS3 works fine). It makes Mobile Internet Explorer look good.
Looks like Sony just gave Apple the boost they've been looking for in the Mobile Gaming department
IF I were debating either a PSP Go or a Touch, the touch would win after this little tidbit, wonder how many more would do the same thing?
Well that depends if they want to play real games or "iPee LITE FREE++!!"
the lameness of of the PSP Go was announced long ago. My iPod touch plays like 30,000 games. No contest.
Sony is a hardware company.
The games on the iPod touch are getting more complex, and with better graphics, than the PSP. Look up iPod touch games like Gangstar, Dungeon Hunter, Elven Chronicles, Let's Golf!, Ace Combat Xi, and Lumines Touch Fusion, to name only a few.
And these games are less than half the price of games on a PSP.
Sony really f*cked up on this one. The PSP Go is going to be popular only with those who hack it.
I'll still buy one.
-as soon as they hack it for emus and homebrew.
You can cram it with Walnuts, Sony.
Fuck nooooooo!
Well I can't wait to get my GO, and finaly ditch my PSP 3000 and UMD format. I hate UMD's
Lol, I was actually considering one at the start of the weekend. Then I realized it was $250. Now hearing this just throws all of that out of the window, they've really done themselves in this time.
PSP GOuge?
You know.....
If Sony had actually worked a little more of their hardware magic, and actually redesigned the PSP Go to have dual analog and all that other stuff that all of us whined about for years, they might actually have some adopters.
I think their design (similiar to the older PSP models) was chosen to offer the transition of using the old games on here from UMD conversions and have a similar control scheme.
Well they just threw all of that out the window.
Blame the content creators that probably won't okay the licensing agreement to include digital downloads instead of physical content. If they are doing it in Europe, it sounds like legal issues got in the way and that's just something you can't put on one side. The content creators have more to gain from you buying the game over again.
Yah because this couldn't be Sony's fault at all....*rolls eyes*
MS, Sony, Apple, Google, etc. When are people going to stop brown nosing a company. They are NOT out to do you any favors. They are out to make a profit and if that means screwing over a consumer who is idiotic enough to shrug and go....whatever. Then they are perfectly happy to continue on with the practice.
People need to grow a pair and say OH HELL NO.
I don't doubt Sony had a hand in this, but he MAY have a point about content creators too. Everyone is so greedy with their double dipping. Some content creators may indeed have demanded people pay another license for the download and Sony happily agreed and never pushed the issue despite having hinted otherwise.
It obviously was a half-hearted gesture anyway. If they can make agreements for European customers, why couldn't they push for US customers? Because they think US customers may be more willing to pay twice for the same game? Something smells on the US front in any case. Exactly what "legal and technical reasons"? Enlighten us Sony.
Digital Copy (like the Dark Knight Blu-Ray), or a variation would be cool. Buy the UMD, get an online download code. But that still doesn't solve the problem for owned games. That can make the stores happy and Sony happy. Unless Sony's gonna be greedy and want every dollar to themselves.
Is there any information that is unique to each UMD (some form of a serial #)? If so, Sony could release some sort of migration tool to make the migration easier. If Sony can invest that, they can still redeem themselves and capture the existing PSP owners market.
But yeah, at the moment, fuck the PSP Go. I'll stick with my Phat 5.00M33 with 5.55.txt.
Why MUST someone who has a perfectly working PSP 1/2/3000 throw away their machine to buy the GO?
Is this some kind of mental obsession to own the latest model?
And please stop calling it an "Upgrade". SONY is selling both the PSP-3000 and GO at the same time.
They are not forcing anyone to buy the GO.
To quote M$: "just offering another choice to the consumer."
@makimak22
You ask why someone would throw out a working PSP 1/2/3000.
For the PSP 1000, the battery has been discontinued. Most of us who purchased a 1000 model (new or used) can no longer get more than a hour and a half on a charge anymore and you cannot buy new batteries (the ones on EBay are a hit-or-miss situation).
The PSP 3000's screen, while brighter, had serious issues with scan-lines. Depending on the game or movie, this problem might never appear, or it could be a major annoyance.
I see no reason for anyone to want to get rid of a 2000 model, and trashing 3000 model is questionable (unless you are turning it in for the $40 you can get from Gamestop), but many 1000 owners are looking to pick up a new model.
You get NOTHING, you lose!
Good day sir!
This problem makes me think of another problem...
Problem:
There are 3 different hardware platforms: A, B, and C.
Each hardware platform has a different instruction set.
Software T has been compiled for hardware platforms A, B, and C
Software T has programing codes T.A, T.B, and T.C for T's respective hardware platform.
T.A, T.B, T.C are different at a lower level of abstraction but at a higher level of abstraction they are software T.
T.A's code can be recompiled to run on B making the recompilation T.B
T.A's code can be recompiled to run on C making the recompilation T.C
T.B's code can be recompiled to run on A making the recompilation T.A
T.B's code can be recompiled to run on C making the recompilation T.C
T.C's code can be recompiled to run on A making the recompilation T.A
T.C's code can be recompiled to run on B making the recompilation T.B
Software Developer X makes T and releases it for the hardware platforms A, B, and C.
Person W owns hardware platforms A and B.
Person W purchases T for hardware platform A.
W owns a license to T but only has a copy of T.A.
Does Software Developer X have to make T.B available to W for W's hardware platform B.
you lost me at "this"
Sony, I think we should part ways. Its not that its me, as much as it is you. You, with your sweet promises that go unfulfilled and your sugar coated lies. I just can't take it anymore. I was so going to spend 250 bucks on the psp go but after this, i'll just stick to my 3000. Sony is full of lies and i hope they rot in hell.
And they killed me from upgrading to the PSP Go, thanks Sony.
The PSP should have been UMD-less from the very beginning. Sony is making an unpopular decision that will be very beneficial in the long run for the whole industry. Undoubtely Nintendo and MS will follow this trend and go disk-less, first with portable consoles and then with full-size ones.
Users will benefit from longer battery life, smaller hardware and lower prices on software, while developers will benefit from higher profit margins through direct distribution and also very efficient protection against piracy, considering that PSP's big brother, the PS3 hasn't been cracked yet.
I use use my PSP daily to watch video podcasts during my train commute and for that type of use, the PSP-Go will definitely be an upgrade with its smaller size and bluetooth support.
What lower prices on software? They're charging MSRP.
Well fuck; I have actually been saving up for a PSP Go! when they come out on Thursday... Guess I need to look for something else that is worth buying -maybe from a company that takes care of its loyal customers.
You all blame Sony, but realistically the number of people they would gain adopting the PSPgo would still be less than the number of people who have f***** them over by pirating their PSP's.
Unless you are in the know, ALOT of people, in the United States especially, don't realize how easy it is to hack your PSP and turn it into a PS1, SNES, GBA, and in some cases DS, while still play PSP games. By hastily providing a method to rip/transfer games to the PSPgo, they are providing a bridge for pirates to exploit....alot of headlines say that they won't release a transfer program but if you read clearly, the language indicates not YET...they want to make sure it's a method they can trust...so stop complaining, shut up and enjoy your games.
Sony is doing so great with the ps3 slim(Hell they got me to give in), how could they screw things up so badly with the psp go?!
Ummm duh. Its Sony. Tell me when they have EVER been consumer friendly. Lets go back in time to pull out an oldy but a goodie. The year is 2000...or maybe it was 2001. The memory stick is in wide use, yet limited to 128MB in size. Sony makes a press release about future support for higher storage capacities and that we will support your device. I drop a grand on a camera that fall. Three months later Sony release a...500MB or something.....no idea what it was. And lo and behold it is not backwards compatible. Sony damn well knew that the pinout on existing hardware could never support anything higher then 128MB and yet they said nothing because they damn well knew what would happen. I had my camera 3 months and it immediately turned into crap because of Sony and their complete lack of using industry standards. E-bay sales of the device tanked as well. This is why it will be a cold day in hell when I purchase anything with a memory stick in it, and also why I'm EXTREMELY hesitant to buy anything Sony anymore.
Check that. I think it may have been summer of '02 that I got my camera since MS Pro came out in '03. Don't know. I do know that it was mere months until I got fooked.
Never owned a Sony camera so I can't speak from experience but you can't deny that Sony has been fairly competitive in the video game arena, and done quite well up until this lil fiasco.
Downloads at full retail price? No thanks.
Dear Sony,
So explain to me how WB can do an HD DVD trade in program...http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/139908
Oh that's right the difference being you are the second biggest douche in the world.
How strange, All my PSP game have been "downloadable" for years now! No "trade in" required!
I'll get one when someone hacks it and I can play my own backups. Hopefully that's possible.
I have over 100 PSP Games, Sony is now telling me that I have to re-buy all the games that I've already bought, just to play them on the new hardware. This is simply asking too much.
I think this is a huge mistake. With this move, Sony is basically marketing the PSP Go to people who are new to the platform or who have few games. The PSP has been around for a long time, what even casual gamer does not already have a PSP and a wallet full of UMDs?
At the current high price point, asking prospective upgraders to re-purchase all of their old games is pretty insulting.
I was planning to pick up a PSP Go, but I refuse to do so if I have to re-purchase games I already own.
@haha
I thought the a copy of the digital game could be loaded on up to 5 devices? I'm I incorrect.
I barely even use my PSP-2000 now. Why would I buy a new PSP GO? It's nice having an internet radio player built in, which is what I use more than anything, but I don't need a handheld gaming device. On the rare occasion I play it (it's been over six months now), I'm at home, inside, by my Wii and PS3. PS3 games are better, and Wii games can be more fun. And both are easier to see on a TV than in my hands.
I don't usually regret gadget purchases but I do with the PSP-2000. But that's mostly on Sony...
To my knowledge, this is the first time an electronics manufacturer release a device and limit themself so much on the target audience for it. I mean, What are Sony's forecast for this device? I sure hope their hopes aren't high because there are so many things with the PSP GO that goes against it.
The First strikes against it is the download only games is one. For technical-gradget freaks like us, this is sure not to be a big deal but the average customer still perfer to buy their games in store, with a box and a disk inside. Although this will change in a few years, I don't think we are there yet for mass population to download games for their consoles yet. The % of people who does it is small compared to people buying their games in stores.
The Second Strike against the PSP GO is this piece of news. No one, who is currently a PSP owner will go and buy a new PSP and kiss their current collection of games goodbye. This means that you can pretty much forget about a large chunk of current PSP owners as potential customers for your PSP GO.
So basically, they are making a new device which by it's nature, eliminate a good chunk of possible buyers. Not the smartest move around.
looks like the PS3 problems, all over again
Literally the only appeal of this device is to a new PSP consumer that has never owned one...
Which is me... and I'm still not going to pay significantly extra for less functionality.
This whole thing is discouraging me from even wanting an older PSP despite the great games available... i'd rather not prop up these jerks.
Not buying it now for sure.
Seriously Sony? I have been a fan of Sony since the PS1 and have stuck by them loyally. I did not get any PSP mostly because I simply wouldnt use it. I take my bros every now and then for certain games but thats it.
Why pay $250 for a handheld system when for $50 more you can get the freaking PS3? anyone would half a brain would see the logic here. PSPgo shoulda been $150.
"would" was supposed to be "with"
Just wait till the PSP go is hacked and you can download all the games for free. The it will be worth it. I can wait :)
Nope!
First the sky high price - $249 - are you kidding, for a handheld. NEVER.
Now, all the money I have spent on UMD games is worthless.
Nope.
Guess I will just have to visit the App Store and get a game for my iPhone.
Bye Sony! Not really gonna miss you.
Its a pretty ballsy (and by ballsy I mean d!ckhole) move to abandon your current customers... your current flag wavers.
Its also shitty that the PSP GO!(fug yourself) trades mini USB and its charger for proprietary connector. Proof positive we still have a long way to go with this whole "universal" connector bit.
Sony really DID just take a huge dump on all of its current PSP fanbase (isn't it small enough already?)
Sony better change their minds about all this real quick, or the GO! is going to be one of the biggest electronics flops ever.
Ah, then for legal and technical reasons I will wait until the firmware is cracked and will just download the games I legally own already. Fuck Sony and their shit format that should have never been created.
