Apple tablet rumors redux: 10.7-inch display, iPhone OS underneath
At this point, it's difficult to say exactly what we believe. Just a fortnight ago, we heard that the so-called Apple tablet would ship with a 9.6-inch display and a P.A. Semi processor, and now iLounge is hearing from "trusted sources" that something other than that is true. The latest round of maybe-sorta-probably-not-true whispers is that the current prototype of the device boasts a 10.7-inch display and a resolution near 720p. Of course, we've no idea where Apple would source a capacitive touchscreen of that size, but we wouldn't put anything past El Jobso. Moving on, we're told that iPhone OS will be used, signifying that this will be more of an advanced media player / light communication device than a full-on netbook competitor. Finally, we're told that a 3G and non-3G version will be offered, and if Mr. Boss signs off on it, it could be announced as early as January with a June / July ship date. Oh, and it'll come pre-loaded with Unicorn-approved applications and a vial of fairy dust -- huzzah!

Good God, man, let it go!
O hai DR House, you feeling ok?
Not like you to comment on an Apple story.
That was one of the fastest Low Rankings I've seen. One page refresh later and Dr House is practically invisible!
@ House
I bet you comment on the quality of porn as well.
Maybe if your comments were constructive you wouldn’t be low ranked.
@Fais:
For him, this IS porn. :D
So true.
BTW, this is not innovative at all, but hey if it was apple that came out with it first, Dr house would be saying that all other companies are playing catch up, no? Lets see what this brings.
Good?
Having the iPhone OS powering this thing would be the worst thing Apple could do. It effectively makes it closed platform, and in a large form factor, which bodes horribly for the future of computing.
If this does indeed exist, it's going to be a huge money pit for Apple. Jobs is reaching with this one. No one is going to buy and oversized iPod touch.
OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG!
When Steve descends from the mountain top and onto the stage carrying two Apple tablets in his hands with the Ten Commandments of Apple displayed, the crowd is going to go wild. And the word shall spread throughout the land and the wicked worshippers of Microsoft shall be struck down to forever live in netbook hell with blue screens on every boot.
Steve, the righteous, deliver us from evil (Microsoft). Amen.
Google the term Windows 7 and you'll get nearly a billion results. Higher than iPhone, Jesus and God combined and almost nobody uses Windows 7. Go figure.
Riiight... cause NOBODY buys Apple products.
Nobody will buy the iPhone
Nobody will buy the Air
Nobody will buy an iMac
Nobody will buy an iPod
Please. Spare us.
Puting the iPhone OS on a tablet is akin to slapping a joystick on a Ferrari. The interface makes no sense for the machine and ultimately ruins it. That being said, I am sure that thousands of people will line up outside every Apple store on launch day to buy the first ever table computer...that you cannot multitask on.
if this thing is seriously just a giant iphone ... what a joke.
Oh engadget, "Trusted sources" does not mean newsworthy.
Yet, like every other Apple story on here it will generate 100+ comments.
I'm not sure you two entirely understand the meaning of the word "newsworthy".
Lol you apple haters are so jealous....
@Metkis, trust me I get it, just saying this will have 100 comments by days end.
Or by Mid-day (EST)
huzzah! your 100+ comments have arrived.
El Jobso? Best thing I've heard this morning!
...and no multitasking.
I'd hate to jump on the multitasking wagon...
But yes. A tablet...with no real multitasking abilities. That would be a huge mess. I'm sorry.
I just don't see this being anything but an iPhone/iPod Touch for the vision impaired (that was a joke for those who can't follow, not serious).
*sigh*
The iPhone mulitasks just fine, it's just castrated for performance and and battery issues. This wouldn't be an issue on a tablet device, which can be put in hibernation mode and can have a bigger battery.
I’m sure there will be multitasking once Apple figures out how to implement it into their user experience (Read: Dumb it down enough for the layman Iphone user) Maybe some sort of cough to open new app, sneeze to switch and lick screen for exposé.
@Fais
Thank you for that.
That gave me the laugh of my morning.
DUH!!! Of course it will multitask. If it indeed runs iPhone OS, it will NOT be scaling up applications to a new resolution. That would just be crap. The applications will run right next to eachother. Apple isnt stupid, and they'll have plenty of room in the case for a better chip and more memory.
That's the iTablet.
Solving life's dilemmas...
one app at a time!
...and no file system
...and being forced to ONLY use apps that Apple approves and lets us use in the App Store
iPhone OS = expensive toy, nothing more.
i wonder how long it will take to get the first tablet hacked and running Snow Leopard.
That hack won't take long I believe.
And when it does...I might actually look at it.
An 'expensive toy' that has completely changed the mobile phone market in just a couple of years, has sold millions of units, has spurred much competition & innovation from other companies (which we all benefit from), earned Apple billions more in revenue, created an avenue for thousands of developers to create software for & make a lot of money from.
But just a toy...
The Apple hate here is wildly entertaining to witness, it really is.
Well seeing as a toy can be anything someone plays with...
He's technically not wrong.
Too much anger around here over a name and product.
If this is PA semi based and runs iPhone OS then Snow leopard won't run on it full stop. Remember they optimized it for intel and a PA semi deisgned ARM is closer to PPC.
That is true
and iPhone OS on a tablet = absolute fail instantly, aside from the ravid applebots of course.
@Skeezle
Microsoft made the XBox...
"iPhone OS = expensive toy, nothing more."
Pardon? I'm sorry but if this is your opinion then you are an idiot (sorry, I can't sugarcoat this any more). That the tablet would run the iPhone OS is very good news for the very simple reason that the whole OS and all the applications already available for it are designed for a touch interface. What you do not want is a desktop OS that does not depend on touch, which is precisely what you would get with Windows and Mac OS X. When applications cannot depend on the interface that you will use to interact with them then you have a problem.
Still, if you can outline why the iPhone OS is an expensive toy, preferably with substantial reliance on facts rather than fanboy nonsense, that'd be great.
@Shmunt
I don't get your point?
Massive difference between a phone, and a 10" tablet, though. A tablet won't fit in your pocket, and if it's not that portable anyway, why hamstring its capabilities by putting a rinky-dink OS on it ?
@Skeezle
You don't get much of anything.
@Kelmon
Only Mac OSX does not support touch as of now.Windows 7 supports multitouch very well as it has been reviewed already.
iPhone apps will not work directly with this tablet its resolution is totally different and they have to be ported to it.
Having no access to file system and other customizations will kill a tablet of this size.
Typing on a flat tablet's touchscreen keyboard or even watching a movie will surely strain your neck as you have look down constantly.A removable stand is not a option as this is certainly not a desktop replacement and is meant to be used on the go.
Some FACTS for you to show how this version of the apple tablet will fail.I do hope apple will come up with something better.
Apple will show up to the show way late offering more of the same in a pretty shell for twice the price... and some will still line up for it. Its like a cult! xD
Typically, Apple will show up the game late but have done things properly. I don't agree that Apple is an innovative company - they just tend to polish concepts into something that people want to buy.
Initially I was excited to see what Apple might offer, but the Microsoft Courier concept has stolen my heart.
This whole 'will they won't they' nonsense is such a yawn.
If anything Microsoft does "steals your heart" you are a freaking LOSER.
macjonny.
You're a freaking loser anyway. You pathetic subhuman.
Wow...someone is upset today.
Macjonny...is the reality of Apple actually being behind Microsoft in terms of anxiousness hurting you so? LOL.
Many tech sites are more excited about the Courier concept than they are the Apple tablet.
My best guess being as I said, this is NOTHING new. It's an iPhone/Touch with an oversized screen. And that's exactly ho they're going to sell it.
You can get the iPhone Plus (with 3G) or the iPod Touch Plus (without 3G)
I love Apple's products, but I am excited about the Microsoft Courier. The only problem is that currently its vaporware and the cost of the courier will be more than what most people will be willing to shell out. Just purely based on the fact that it is supposed to have two 7" capacitive touchscreens.
@iDavey
"Many tech sites are more excited about the Courier concept than they are the Apple tablet."
Really? Can we have some examples? (unbiased sites only please)
Google Results 1 - 10 of about 601,000 for "Microsoft Courier"
Google Results 1 - 10 of about 1,350,000 for "apple tablet"
You really seem to put a lot of stock in this Courier, according to your posts. You mention it in almost every one. Were you one of the ones saying how the Zune was going to kill the iPod a few years ago too? Stop pointing your finger at others for being blind fanboys please, thanks.
Wow. So number of articles...is what we're basing it on.
Let me dash your dreams a little.
How long ago was the courier even brought to light?
How long ago was the tablet rumor brought to light?
Now look at that. Within just a few weeks...there's almost half as many articles as there is tablet ones. Yikes.
While the tablet rumors have been out for months on end.
SO you just kind of proved yourself wrong and made yourself look silly. Anything else you'd like to do for me?
Gizmodo (the one who broke the story of the Courier) states they're more excited. Even Engadget, the Holy Grail of all that is Apple loving stated that they hold a tiny bit more interest in the Courier.
So what are you trying to say sir? What indeed?
