HP Envy 15 FCC filing reveals magnesium casing, Linux options
Okay, so here's a big way the HP's new Envy 15 isn't like the MacBook Pro: its case is made of magnesium, not aluminum. Take that, haters. Of course, there's still the note-perfect reproduction of the MBP's unibody looks, that buttonless glass multitouch trackpad, and the overall sense that HP's designers did their homework in an Apple store to deal with, but hey, at least you're getting a Core i7 processor when this thing launches on October 18th, right? Oh, and in case you're not into Windows 7, you're in luck -- there are quite a few references to Linux scattered about, so we'd expect a penguin-friendly configuration to be announced at some point. Its not a unibody (meaning carved out of a single piece of something which is what it usually means).

Don't you mean "Aloo-min-ium"?
So apple has exclusive patent on chiclet style keys and magnesium casing? I don't see the problem here.
As long as the keys are raised and the touchpad isn't sticky as shit, I'm excited.
Honestly, HP touchpads are not made to be used at all.
Keep in mind that this is not a consumer line laptop. I think this laptop will offer an unrivaled experience for an HP (Heck, for any laptop in its class...)
HP makes good laptops, I would be really looking into getting the 15" with the Intel i7 if hadn't gotten my MBP only a few months ago.
The MBP with i5/i7 will be out shortly. Apple has quite often gotten new Intel procs ahead of everyone else. Unlike Windows, OS X actually makes good use of multi-core procs.
Magnesium on the top, but plain old plastic (mylar) on the bottom. Turn it over and it looks cheap. Why not an all magnesium case?
um...Apple stole the chiclet keyboard from sony. And the glass screens from HP. Maybe they deserve there to be a more powerful PC clone?
I suppose you might believe that if you were 12 years old and have no knowledge of computer history. Chiclet keyboards have been around for a long time in various forms. Neither Sony nor Apple can or do claim to be the first to use them. Same thing with glass screens, although most PC laptops actually use plastic not glass like Apple. Google is your friend.
Calculators had chiclet keypads since like forever...
It's truly pathetic that the best a company with HP's resources can do is make a poor clone of a Mac Book Pro. I have seen it and it is nowhere near a Unibody in look, feel, or fit.
"The magnesium alloy bottom layer offers reduced weight, while a pure-grade aluminum chassis provides strength and durability."
Too bad the kids at Engadget can't read.
Magnesium > Aluminum
So if it has to be hot, it has to be apple macbook copy ;] well done HP
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. What's with HP? First they copy the lighted Apple logo on the back of the screen, now this?
Oh how did this macbook get here
Apple abandoned magnesium cases and went to aluminum because they had metal fatigue problems and kept cracking. We'll see if HP has solved this. Personally i doubt it. It's not the kind of problem that is easy to fix the first time.
I smell like omeone is copying the Aluminum MacBook Pro. or Aluminum MacBook, now, i dont want to be an a-hole, but it looks to muuch alike, and if they want to make their products magnesium, thats fine with me, just get another Designed buddy.
why would you WANT a core i7 in a laptop again? "I can play bioshock for 12 minutes at as many fps, and create a small convection oven. AWESOME!"
Comedy GOLD ... Time to flop it out and compare ...
save your money and buy from a company that will cover you if something happen!...HP let alot of people down...they come out with new laptop but don't support their old customer...read more at www.hplies.com
You certainly don't want a magnesium shelled computer to overheat and catch fire...
Realistically I would not be surprised it's just magnesium color and no magnesium is involved at all, not that they couldn't, but you know how that goes.
If HP manages to stear clear of any glossy screen failiures this thing is full of win. Building on somebody elses experience this is a lesson they should have learnt, somewhere..
http://communitylinux.org/ This is a site that is supported by HP :)
Apple does have that patent for the multitouch track pad right? Go sue HP then.
I hate patents.
Has anyone else noticed the lack of a CD/DVD drive?
Yet another win for Apple. It's even named ENVY, wow. The product designers should be ashamed. Years of product design/engineering school only to copy someone else's work? There HAS to be other designs that are cool and innovative, right? Maybe Hyundai will start making Ferrari Clones.
