Dell adds dual-core SU1400 CPU, other options to Inspiron 11z
Dell's 11.6-inch Inspiron 11z just went on sale last month, and already the outfit is opening up the options for those not entirely pleased with the single $399 model. Starting today, a $479 configuration is available to ship with a 250GB HDD and Vista Home Premium (with a Windows 7 upgrade, of course), and if that's still not enough, prospective customers can soon select their 11z in a variety of colors. We're talking Alpine White, Ice Blue, Jade Green, New Cherry Red, Passion Purple and Promise Pink, with the latter contributing $5 to breast cancer research. As for optional hardware upgrades, you can slot a dual-core Pentium SU1400 CPU in there alongside 4GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive. As of this very moment, Dell has yet to open up the CTO doors, but we're guessing an admin is on that as we speak. Right, Dell?

Dell's doing it right these days. Prices, options, models, etc. They're on point.
Except for battery life
it's just too bad their customer service sucks beyond description.
I've had nothing but good experiences with Dell. I'm sure you had a terrible experience, but I never have. And I've dealt with them a lot.
Why can't companies offer products that'll support breast cancer that men would be equally likely to buy? How many guys are going to rock a pink laptop even if they would prefer Dell put part of their profits towards breast cancer research.
Lame.
I don't know if they're doing things right...
When the Inspiron 11z first came out, the price was $399. In less than a month, the price increased to $449. Now, it's $479.
It's $899 in Sweden. :(
hmmm.. sounds interesting
Dell always offers you nice options and upgrades for their customers. Nice job Dell.
Yea, one of the things we lack here in Canada is reputable online retailers that'll actually customize your computer. Dell is really good about it in this regard.
if they could cram that into a 10" form factor they would have one killer netbook. nevertheless thats quite an intriguing package for $400
SU4100********
anyone have any idea how the Pentium SU1400 CPU might run, will the dell 11z run 1080 and run older games like WOW, with an ram upgrade to go along.
no Radeon/Ion, no sale
I hate to ask, but what's the difference between a regular C2D and a dual-core Pentium SU1400 CPU?
I swear, you turn your back on these processor wars for 3 months and you miss out on everything, what happened to the excitement over Core i7s? :P
What the heck is a SU1400? I can't find this thing anywhere on google except for the link back to this exact page.
Oh. Its a typo, I bet. Its probably SU4100. Its a new CULV. 2M Cache, 1.30 GHz, 800 MHz FSB
it's a typo, try a google for su4100
it's no different from the su9400 from '08 that they pulled the plug on for some strange reason... specs are identical. i just got a su2700 and although core 2 single core (oxymoron?) merom, it runs vista great; excited to see how it runs windows 7.
correction:penryn, not merom... d'oh!
@Chad
Core 2 Solo is not an Oxymoron at all if you've followed the "Core" line long enough. Before Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Solo there was simply Core Duo and Core Solo, the "2" after Core now refers to the fact that it is now in its second generation. The second generation of the "Core" line offers more bandwidth to the processor through a higher speed FSB or Front Side Bus which is the piece of hardware on the motherboard that determines the speed at which the memory on your motherboard communicates with your CPU.
I've never bought an Intel product since the Pentium III and even I know the above information.
And with that, AMD FTW!
There is no SU1400, it's a typo. Bad Engadget editor! No cookie for you.
DARREN MURPH HAS DYSLEXIA!!!!!
Marren Durph is an affle banpoy!
rofl
CULV + ION = Heaven
is there even such thing? I want that combination!
I suspect that OEMs will start producing such a product in weeks to months to come. Right now I really am holding off on buying a netbook because the Intel Atom is simply too weak for my needs and the lack of HD acceleration means that I'll never get to play YouTube HD (and seriously, normal YouTube is killing my eyes already).
ASUS make it. It's not cheap.
I read that as "elevensies"
Dell's build quality is so random though, some, the 6400 series for example, have really excellent build quality but others, even some of the more expensive ones, feel really flimsy. The specs are nice but if they use the flimsy factory instead of the one they apparently share with lenovo, apple and asus, then ... no thanks
Here in Canada, the 11z is already available to order with those colours, 4GB, and up to a 500GB HDD. The CPU is only a celeron 723, though (no dual core option yet). Of course, the base model starts at $499, and goes to well over $800 with the above options :(
