PSP firmware 6.10 brings Bluetooth internet tethering to the PSP Go
The PSP Go isn't even out yet and Sony's already dishing out the feature updates -- PSP firmware 6.10, announced today, allows the slider handheld to tether to your cellphone over Bluetooth for remote internet access. That's actually a pretty handy feature for a system that relies on network game distribution, don't you think? That's not all, however: all PSPs will get a new XMB feature called SensMe which can generate playlists based on "moods," and the PC-based MediaGo software is being updated as well. Not a bad haul -- we'll let you know when it goes live. SensMe video after the break.

That bluetooth tethering actually seems pretty cool.
EXTREME mood. Nice
Ah a firmware fix even before it gets released kinda how things seem to be now release half finished products use the public as beta testers.
PSP Go = your games are worthless!
you are now blocked by sony from,
lending YOUR games
trading YOUR games
selling YOUR games
OR EVEN GIVING YOUR GAMES AWAY FOR FREE.
who's games are they exactly ????????????????
steam is not on any console, the psp 3000 will be phased out.
f*** off sony paid public relations staff who infest the net to spew their lies, we have heard your counter arguments before.
anti-consumer is anti-consumer regardless if someone else does it this does not give you the right to rip us off.
Half finished product and use the public as beta testers sounds more like Microsoft than Sony.
This is why I said the PSP should have Bluetooth from the get-go. Would have also simplified networking with a PS3.
Gotta give them a little credit here, they are implementing some good ideas
I can't ever imagine listening to music on a PSP. I might possibly watch some videos if the new screen is really good, I can't imagine it will beat the Ipod Touch for anything like that. I wish Sony would understand we really just want it to play games and concentrate on that.
boostjunkie,
A great games machine in 2009 will inately have the capability of playing back mp3s. So letting it do so is not taking anything away from your games.
The PSP is already a great little game machine. No, it's not quite as good at playing mp3s as my five year old ipod, but it's good enough for a lot of people who don't want multiple machines. This feature will probably really really help it be a better mp3 player without taking a thing away from the games.
I love that Sony is putting all these media ideas into their devices. Apple is doing the same thing (from a different direction), but this is the way of the future. If this PSP go had the ability to make phone calls, I would buy one in a split second, and that's where this is going. One device... all your entertainment, data, music, movies, games. right now, that's probably an iPhone, but everyone knows that we need competition. We need other conglom pocket tech.
If Sony listened to you and went for 'just a gaming machine', they would reap short term rewards. That's not Sony. They do a lot of stupid and off the wall things, and once in a while, it takes off.
Anyone know if the processing/graphics capabilities in the PSP Go are any better than the 3000? (sorry if this is a little off topic)
Nope it's exactly the same as the 2000 and 3000.
Queue wireless carriers whining
No, you need to give out numbered tokens or something. They're terrible at queuing.
You should mean "Cue Wireless Carriers whining"
Good thing for the BT tethering, since the wifi blows. Won't upgrade from my launch PSP-1000 any time soon. Hopeing it sells... ok though.
PSP 1000 is by far the best PSP, my friend. If you really want a PSP go, I'd advise anyone to hit up ebay or craigslist and just buy a used PSP 1000. They are rugged and get the job done. I don't run pirated old SNES games, but there's obviously that advantage too.
I think Sony is keeping it the same for a reason. Hopefully they will announce some kind of PSP 2 that is also a phone in a couple of years, and this is some kind of tech demo of a device that gets all its games online.
the psp 1000 the best psp? From what I have been researching lately I wouldn't say that's accurate. I want to get one to take advantage of a hack I just read about where you can basically access your PS3 on your computer but you need a hacked PSP. From the specs of PSP 1000 and PSP 2000 the psp 2000 seems exactly the same but is lighter and games load a bit faster from what I have read. The PSP 2000 can do all the same stuff as the 1000 but does it better and it is hackable too if you find the right model. I just found a star wars white PSP that is supposed to be guaranteed to be hackable.
The PSP 2000 is obviously technically better. It and the 3000 have better screens, weight less, more RAM, and I'm sure they are a tenth of a second faster in a lot of things.
When we say older is better, we're adding in the cost benefits. I also like the weight.
I don't think you get a single thing with the new ones that is all that valuable. I think the screens on the ancient ones are just fine, and aside from the loading speed being slow, I wouldn't change anything aside from adding on a bloody second thumb stick.
but it's just personal opinion, mate. You'll love your PSP 2000 if you go that route. I thought the system was sure to fail a couple of years ago, but Sony has turned this ship around.
Hopefully Dark Alex will make 6.00 M33. I hate not being able to buy new games. I would like to get the new GTA at least without having to resort to some crappy DS version.
Here! Here! You took the words right outta my mouth er brain er fingertips...
Just installed it on my 2000.
Now we just have to figure out how to tether our notebooks to the PSP Go...
why would you want to do that...?
With a USB cable?
You could also use the Bluetooth to tether to netbooks with 3G, sim slots etc. Also for filesharing, if you have patience.
Great. Now how many people are going to try this and get hit with a surprise on the bill because they don't have a tethering plan?
I'd be very surprised if anyone who didn't know that Internet-via-a-cellphone costs a bomb without a dedicated plan, would have the gumption to want to tether their psp to their phone.
i am sorry... but AT&T has crappy internet over their 3G.
I don't have a iphone (N97) and i have hard times keeping the connection lasting over a hour. It just times out and it doesn't let me get back in. Not only that it sometimes just magically goes out ... and seconds later it comes back...
So if I am going to be using my phones internet and it keeps going in and out it will probably be useless in the PSP case.
Now i know it is not my phone... Friend has same issue on his N95.
One feature that I would like to see available in a PSP firmware update is built-in DLNA Media Player (UPnP AV MediaRenderer) and Media Controller (UPnP AV Control Point) support for these handheld units. It would then make the units part of the DLNA-based home media network, whether as playing the content through their own display and sound output or causing another DLNA-compliant Media Renderer to play the content. It would definitely complement whatever Sony is doing for UPnP AV / DLNA with the PS3, some of the GigaJuke music systems and nearly all of the Bravia LCD TVs.
With regards,
Simon Mackay

Bluetooth Internet Access?
= O Holy crap.
Love engadget but most of us don't care about the go. move on.
... then why bother clicking on a post you don't care about, and then why bother commenting on it? And why bother telling people what they do, or don't, care about?
They're a tech blog. They'll post whatever they want. If you don't like it, the exit is just an ALT+F4 away.
After deciding that I do eventually want to get a PSP (it's just a couple ticks down on my current priority list) I've been debating if I wanted a Go or a 3000....this definately skews in the go's favor, but I'm still not sure. I'll decide once I get a hands on it and can decide if I can tolerate the form factor
The older S series Walkman had the SensMe channels. I've tried it and it works pretty nicely; it actually analyses every single song's info and classifies them depending on how hard the song is (much like amarok's mood bar).
Imagine playing a game like SOCOM on your PSP online while tethering data from your cell phone and you don't have a data plan :D
Who doesn't have a Data Plan nowadays?
I don't, and the main reason for that is because I live in a city where you can find a wireless hotspot just about anywhere, so I have no problems with that. Not to mention Canadian plans suck, so I don't like getting ripped off. I personally called Rogers Customer Service and told them to block all incoming and outgoing data, and everytime I tried accessing the Access Points after that call, they never worked, I deleted them and I couldn't be happier. Why pay for something you can get free? I know not everyone agrees with this, but for me, using a WiFi hotspot is much better and faster, and I can always find one, even on the streets.
@ALBGunner04
Good counter point to your own point :D
I'll take a wild guess that having access to unlimited data plans or free wifi is possible for many people. I'm in a big city, so maybe I have a completely skewed view on this though...
I get free dial up internet but it kills the battery really fast and its SLLOOOOOOOW
I get free dial up internet but it kills the battery really fast and its SLLOOOOOOOW
Don't forget go syncs with Bt DS3 controllers.
"Your music on this PS .........*long pause* ............ P"
now the pspgos that will be in stores in a few days, are those going to be up to date or will i have to update it once i get it?
Ohh if I only had Internet tethering.. Man oh man would I be happy.
But the fact that I can load 85,000 apps and do about anything else, defeats that purpose.
Then again, your a great gaming device. You have such great games, like gta chinese wars, oh.. Which is also for iPod.. (sorry), well atleast you have Sims 3! Nope iPod has that, sorry I got mixed upp... Well atleast you have NFS shift! Oh, iPod has that too..
Hmm, seems iPod touch has everything you have and more.. And is practically the same price.. Well, psp go, all I can say is R.I.P..
If only you had a completely undeserved smug sense of self-importan... Oh.
I shouldn't feed you, Mr Troll, but I gotta ask: do you really think the iPod needs your jealous insecure defense? It's obviously a beloved product.
It will never have anything as good as Gran Turismo or Metal Gear Solid, but a lot of people only play Tetris level games and listen to ten thousand songs. The PSP is better at games than the iPod, and worse at media. No one really has to take it personally. Just be glad that if you like games and media, but have a clear preference, then you can choose one of these things accordingly, or buy both, or neither. Do you really care what other people get? Apple is turning a profit either way.
I disagree, I have the 3rd Gen iPod Touch, and while the apps are great, I wish it had bluetooth tethering. I can still tether my cell through WiFi, but still, bluetooth doesn't rape my battery life as much.
Oh look, a real, console quality game, such as God of War. Ipod has...oh wait.
More scorn poured on the PSPgo Please.
More porn scoured from the PSPgo Please.
This is very cool and all, but I can already tether PSP, DS, etc. through WiFi tether for the G1.
ive been tryna do that with my touch pro 2 but it keeps giving me errors... maybe android just does it different... i got a dev phone so maybe i should try that right now
There's just something about that small, sliding PSP that makes it desirable.
I have a hacked launch PSP-1000 and I couldn't be happier... or could I? Sometimes I think I just want things to hack them, even if I have the older, more tested models.
I think I recall Engadget's hands-on (or another tech blog) saying it felt kinda cramped and the build quality was iffy. Mehhh..
Oh right, back to Scribblenauts.
got it
When is this update coming on the playstation uk website.....???????
Well i been debating forever on whether or not to get a psp go since i have the psp 3000 and I have quite a few games and movies for it too. But I have decided to get a psp go and keep the psp 3000. I do like playing my psp on my tv and to be able to use a ps3 controller via bluetooth is awesome. Plus all the little things they have been revealing about the psp go has really gotten me excited about it.
Apple should have this feature with the iPod Touch.
Very nice interface. is it avaliable for older models too? Sony Please bring it to the PS3, it's on of the best sounding All in one media centers but it just suck when you have to navigate thru music...
anyone figured out how to use this yet?
Yes... burn batteries of 2 devices tethered over bluetooth so I can surf the internet on a sh*t browser with no keyboard, and no touchscreen.
I'll stick to my smart phone. Hell, even "dumb" phones mostly have keyboards and keypads for typing.
Sony's head >*crammed*> Sony's ass.
Also, no 3G network (at least in the US) has bandwidth fast enough to make downloading games this way practical.
I think we need to wait until the product is launched.
Sony is a very reliable brand and we do not know if this new gadget will beat the I pod!
I've been searching for documents about this topic and I found this site: Yellow documents, they've a lot of document types from different subjects.
Cheers,
