Video: Google Earth animated with real time human and vehicular traffic
Mmm, real time dynamic maps of the Earth. It seems nowadays that supervillainy just isn't as hard as it used to be. Back in the days of Hugo Drax, you had to be a filthy rich eccentric to ever get to spy on the whole world, whereas today all you need is Google Earth and some Georgia Institute of Technology students. Using motion capture data and the veritable litany of CCTV cameras people have surrounded themselves with, the team have succeeded in mapping and animating the real time movements of cars, people and clouds. A proper unveiling is coming up at a symposium next month, by which point they might have added weather patterns, birds and river motions to that list, but for now you can enjoy the video demo after the break.

So there going to put up cameras at the parks, so we can view friendly games of soccer? Don't get me wrong this sounds great, and I'm excitied about the traffic. But won't this mean putting up CCTV everywhere? I know most freeways already have em so no biggie. I think London will be covered though. ;)
Now people can watch me on my laptop commenting, "No one gives a shit what you're doing on Twitter!" Oh wait...
A type of augmented reality like this already exists. I've seen televised football games where video feeds were used to recreate plays from different angles other than the original feeds.
come on guys look at the pros and negatives soon anyone commiting(abducting a child for example),In time find where you dropped your mobile phone realtime and WHO picked (or stole it)follow em to there house and take it back!,as you will know where they hide it in there house in the closet etc( in time they will be able to use heat sources, light sources to see inside homes,If They already cant do it?)it will be great for the police ,great for if you got ppl working for you taking too many days off and you want to check they are at hospital,in bed etc, check wherey ou love ones are on the way home etc, where you post ,delieveries are.
Ooo and the big negative big brother google is ....watching US right now i bet so no watching porn or cuddling your gf n wives ,,ooo and no using the bathroom too !,they can watch you on the wc/toliet! as it will be on google earth before you know it!
This is wrong, Bruce.
The usefulness of things like traffic is pretty easily seen, you can not possibly complain about that. It is not using actual car images, just using cameras to predict traffic movement, which can bring a whole new generation to traffic prediction. All the other things though are a bit gimmicky. The live sports and stuff is definitely cool, along with pedestrian traffic, but hardly useful. And for everybody that is complaining, this is all public data, so take off your tin foil hats. Also, this isn't "Google" they really had little to do with this, it was a 3rd party.
Right now there's a few fuzzy cameras watchable on the net, now what do you think will happen if google and yahoo and MS start to fight over bringing that kind of stuff? before you know it there's a freaking HD camera in front of your house showing your going ons 24/7 to the entire planet.
And a camera on every damn street corner, and then they might fuzz out your face and license plate, but if it's a car the same color and make as your registration pulling out of your driveway what good is that? Everybody that vaguely knows you or looked up the info will knows it's you.
now all we need is a way to somehow merge google earth with grand theft auto... >=D
This is fantastic, Google needs to hire these guys
great, so the implantanted chip would not work, rather we develop a stalking software that will track our every nose pick. with this they can track us completly what we do outside. too much information, its going too far
It won't show you, just a little computer avatar where you are... It's not going to be able to find specific people, unless they know exactly where you are to begin with and follow the person.
but this is more just to show crowds of people, not individuals.
Still kinda creepy
This is pretty cool.
I can see many applications for this.
I can finally look at myself looking at myself on Google Earth looking at myself looking at myself on Google Earth and so on so forth.
My life is complete.
All this does is make use of data that is already available. It uses CCTV feeds that are already there, public webcams, traffic cams, and so forth. Google, or Ga Tech for that matter, aren't putting up cameras around the country.
So, if you want to keep your privacy in your home, just don't put up a public webcam in your home. If you REALLY must have a webcam in your bathroom, keep it behind a firewall or put a password on it or something. We don't want to see that either.
And just to make people mad for no apparent reason...
Go Jackets!
so it's a 3d representation of somewhere on earth, with people and cars and traffic... why not just look through a webcam and watch the real thing?
Am I the only one who sees a terrible end as a result of this tech? I mean, I hate to be a Cassandra and all, but,,,,
www.streetviewfun.com got nuthen on this...
this will be highly debated
Two words "Snow Crash" Hiro Protagonist & Neal Stephenson would be proud.
Wow we are creating "The Matrix"!!
It's "The Matrix"!!
Stalker-Cam
Maybe this will tell me where the next police speed trap is set up =)
Cool, so it's basically like a real time video version of Photosynth.
I'm going inside now... I might be out in a few years when this thing is outlawed...
Ima jk, this looks awesome, I'm glad they only show animated people tho, I wouldn't really like the idea of myself being broadcasted for the world to see whenever I am in public... stalkers unite!
Video- 2:48 "Here, two people are shown making a drug deal"
What are they going to do for High Speed chases in LA. I want to see that!
Ha, the ultimate kick would be to call it up on your phone, take your eyes off the road, and try to drive your car based only on what you see on the phone, avoiding modeled or interpolated cars. Then you'd have a "real" accident. But pretty soon you'd be able to see the accident on your phone.
