Atlona ships AT-DP200 DVI to Mini DisplayPort adapter
Folks who just so happen to own a Mini DisplayPort-equipped monitor (you know, like Apple's 24-inch LED Cinema Display) have been longing for this adapter for what feels like forever, and while Atlona assured us it was coming way back in July, it has taken until now for the all-important ship date to arrive. The AT-DP200 is capable of maintaining resolution and HDCP compatibility, but considering the $179 price tag, we might suggest picking up a new graphics card instead. Your call, buster.

Ah, but you see, this will let you use the screen on a PC... which is good for me because my gaming desktop is windows and my laptop (also on desk) is a MBP...

This adapter does the same thing and lets you use an LED ACD on computer. And its less than $20. http://estore.circuitassembly.com/products/Mini-Displayport-Female-to-Displayport-Male-Adapter-Cable.html
Still requires DisplayPort on my video card. My video card does not have DisplayPort, and DisplayPort / DVI are electrically different (hence why this box costs much money and needs power)

Or you could buy a new videocard for less than $179. heck, even if you have a top of a line video card, the new 5870 and 5850 aren't too much more than $180 and will likely best your top of the line card...no?
I agree, I would sooner pick up an HD5800 series card than this device. However, there is clearly scenarios where you don't have a box to put a video card into, just a monitor you want hooked up. Still, I bet you can find a monitor that supported regular DP for cheaper than this device. Priced WAY too high.
^Including buying a Mini-DP to DP adapter.
I can just picture a Mac desk setup in the future. Everything connected has an adapter so that it can be used with non-apple hardware/accessories.
DisplayPort is a ratified universal standard, as is every other type of port Apple uses on every device they make aside from the iPhone's proprietary data port. Anything else I can help you with?
"DisplayPort is a ratified universal standard, as is every other type of port Apple uses on every device they make aside from the iPhone's proprietary data port. Anything else I can help you with"
Apple uses MINI display port on recent Macs, which they completely invented and had never been part of the "ratified universal standard" at all.
Keep this kind of help to yourself man....
skalpa, Mini DisplayPort is PART of the DisplayPort standard specification. Is there something about that that you don't understand?
I quote: "On January 13, 2009, VESA announced that Mini DisplayPort would be included in the upcoming DisplayPort 1.2 specification."
Anything else I can help you with?
I can see where in select Home AV (theater) applications may want to use this to convert HDMI/DVI to Displayport.
and how would that differ from apples setup during last 20 years or so? not at all.
they use connection formats that others don't on purpose, to keep you in macland. mac selling shops don't mind either, makes a nice side income and also makes a good argument for why the customer should buy everything new.. and then again in 2 years everything new again. AND if others start using the standard they'll drop it(fw).
Just get an HD 4850 instead!
Wait, there are companies that make a cable that does the exact same thing, but without the need of a power brick or supply. Plus, they cost at most, $20! I bought a cable that converts mini-DP to DP for my dell monitor and it works great. The same company announced that they were finishing up testing on a mini-DP connector to displayport connector for the Apple Cinema display too.
there's active and passive adapters for going DPDVI and which one you need is situation dependent. See the current ATI 58xx card DP->DVI active adapter fiasco for more.
Fairly unfortunate shortening of Display Port. 'My new monitor got DP'. Which leads me onto what mini-DP is? Midget?
Fugly!!! That looks like a radioshack project box stuffed with an arduino.
Looks like a power inverter to me, but I'm not saying that's good.
The only monitor out there that I know is display port only is the Apple Cinema 24" and it's glossy screen, no thanks to that and this clunky ugly converter box.
Introducing soon: the Apple port. Runs video, audio, USB, Firewire, ethernet and power all through one cable, is compatible to nothing existing and you have to buy an adapter to use your old hardware.
Just FYI. The display port is a VESA standard not Apple's. And eventually every monitor will have this port.
The cable you're talking about is Light Peak. all but power.
"...but considering the $179 price tag, we might suggest picking up a new graphics card instead."
I'm confused to how that would help if we already had the monitor but not a late model mac?
I could see how you could be confused about swapping a graphics card in a Mac to get new features and improved performance. This should cover all your questions about Mac gaming and graphics card swaps.

If you can afford a Cinema display you can pretty much afford to upgrade your mac and save yourself the hassle. Why would you buy a display not directly compatible with your Macbook in the first place?.
So you can use your shiny awesome new display with your non-Mac.
A Cinema display on a non-MAc sounds to me like equipping a 1982 VW Bug with Momo rims.
Why would you liken a Cinema to a VW bug? They're not that bad.
I took option 2. Went on eBay and bought an NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 for my Mac Pro.
Cost me less than £70 and has a DVI and a DP port on it so I get the best of both worlds. I'm guessing it must be HDCP compliant.
All this crazy expensive adaptor business is a nightmare. I remember when I had to buy an ADC/DVI adaptor. Cost me over £100 and all because Apple phased out a technology that they invented themselves. It worries me with these talks of LightPeak coming that once I've paid to update all my hardware they will phase it out and I'll be back to adaptor hell again!
Welcome to Appleland, keep the KY and your credit card handy....it might be a bumpy ride.
Side question: Is there anyone who actually likes a glossy screen? Why do they even make them?
This is insane.
Just buy a non-Apple monitor.
Pay a whole lot less and end up with something that doesn't need an absurdly priced adaptor.
And you'll most likely get a crappier monitor too. The Cinema Display uses an H-IPS panel, most cheaper displays use cheaper, shittier panels and don't have LED backlighting. Quality is actually important to some people, even if it isn't to you.
Or just buy a less-shitty monitor. Problem solved.
And by "less shitty" I'm assuming you mean "more shitty". H-IPS panel and LED backlighting is actually closer to "the best you can buy" than "shitty". You want to pay less for a different monitor go for it - but for the most part, cheaper monitors are worse.
I saw that Darron suggested getting a new video card instead of this product. to that I have a couple of things to add. First and absolutely foremost; Macbook pro owners cannot switch out thier video card. Its that simple. So if you purchased your Mac before 2009, you are not going to be able to use the new Cinema Displays at all, unless of course you use the Atlona DP200. Secondly the average cost for a viable Displayport card with an actual DisplayPort output is about $300. So if you have a Apple tower and money to burn, I guess Darron's suggestion is apt, however; if like me, you are one of the thousands of MBP or MB purchasers with a DVI port on your machine, and you like the unparalled graphics that the new LED 24" Cinema Displays can provide, might I suggest using the DP200
I am buying this so I can hook my 24 LED cinema to a KVM switch then from there to my 2009 mac pro and my pc. :)
pretty sure it's cheaper to run VMWARe or just use Remote Desktop to access your PC from your mac.
"Introducing soon: the Apple port. Runs video, audio, USB, Firewire, ethernet and power all through one cable, is compatible to nothing existing and you have to buy an adapter to use your old hardware."
Yeah, remember ADC? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Display_Connector
Light Peak. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_Peak
wow. fail, is there a reason its so large?
most/all monitors have DVI, so there's no need to go the other way
I guess the terrible consumer numbers didn't come out before they priced this. I'm really amazed at the retail pricing of so many items listed on Engadget lately. Do these companies live in a bubble because they appear to know nothing about the huge number of unemployed or the recession we're still in.
you guys cry a lot lol. I been waiting for this for a long time. Now I can use my $800 on something other then a mac. As for VMware and remote desktop. I do both but I want to play games on my PC and watch blu ray rips.
Who is Atlona and why have I never heard of them? I looked around online and they look like a cheap Chinese importer!
I bought this thing and it does NOT working hooking up my cinema display to my hd5750 with DP out http://www.cpustuff.com/product.php?productid=16245
