How would you change Snow Leopard?
Ah, Snow Leopard. It's the same cat you're used to caressing (or beating, as the case may be), but in a much, much colder climate. Or something like that. OS X 10.6 promised Leopard users a "refined" experience, and one that would only cost upgrading users $29. At that price, most Apple fanatics figured that picking it up on launch day was a no-brainer, but as we've come to sadly expect from Cupertino's software labs these days, all wasn't perfectly well with the big snowy cat. Even now, users are still kvetching about broken functionality and mental pains that are literally indescribable. Even if you're not in that camp, we're eager to hear how your Snow Leopard experience has been. Are you satisfied with the upgrade? Will you never, ever install an Apple update again before a million others try it first? Are you already looking forward to 10.7 Windows 7? Tell all in comments below -- you never know who could be tuning in.

Replace it with Windows 7
One word: Unicorns.
I see what you did there... *doesn't feed the troll*
@ GR
three letters: mms
It needs some maintenance utilities that have to be run manually. I feel rather useless not having to do anything.
definitely. make its security a little better than a joke so it doesnt take 3 minutes for it to get hacked at a security conference?
make it compatible with more than 5 games, run directx which 99% of all games are written for.
let it be able to record digital cable like windows media center can
allow it to do something useful in the business world
make it useful for more than one program people really buy it for (final cut)
not make it cost hundreds of dollars more than the competition for just another *nix but with a proprietary gui
not make it suck
as stated above...replace it with windows 7
LOL, Windows 7? You mean replace the *NIX security model with UAC?
I just want native WRITE permissions to FTP in Finder. If Nautilus and Explorer (granted, not very well) have it...
First post got it right.
Ya right... and dig a grave for my computer right next to Redmond ha...!!! lol... Replace it with Windows 7... Go on windows freaks... stick to mediocrity and stay happy with what U have instead of getting the best....
ASR.
Engadget has had this topic on atleast 1 other occasion, maybe 2. But yes first post got it right, replace with Windows 7 - enjoy life outside your tiny box.
My thoughts exactly. Very good, sir!
Replace it with Windows 7?
Why wait. Just replace it with Vista. It is the same thing after all.
Strip away the UI tweaks and it's still the same decade old registry mess and poorly designed dialog box after dialog box and creaky old underpinnings that break if you move an application folder somewhere else.
Definately meant ASLR
Engadget : Are you satisfied with the upgrade? Will you never, ever install an Apple update again before a million others try it first? Are you already looking forward to 10.7 - Windows 7? Tell all in comments below.
Since you have asked i shall answer
I will get the one that "works" and "plays" everything even in a "netbook" butter smooth
Windows 7~
@arkweld
Dunno about you, but I turn off those dialog boxes. I am competent enough to not infect my computer with viruses. I've configured my Windows 7 to be a fairly close approximation of my XP interface, albeit a shinier one. All in all, it might LOOK like Vista on the surface, but I have yet to have any problems that I had with Vista. Vista blows.
"Automatic Failure @ Oct 2nd 2009 11:42PM
Replace it with Windows 7"
...or at least stop it from trying to copy Windows 7's transparencies
Wow all these comments were nothing on topic at all just a bunch of windows pushers.
Gamers do something better with your time, lvl up your real life not a game. And no that doesn't mean f5 on social media sites -_-.
has anyone noticed @ how anything microsoft and apple on engadget has a war of people that are highly and highest ranked and jus as many lowest rank users lol ITS A WAR THE APPLE Vs. THE MICROSOFT !!!!! You all do know that everything that has a beginning will have a end someday....that means both apple and microsoft will die sooner or later!!!!!!
i am NEUTRAL on the both of them i use both of them !!!! They both are great to use andd have there plus sides and have their downsides.....oh oh boy here comes the hate replies.
LINUX is ok to if you are smart it is LOL, but i wont pick on you apple and windows fans about that one hahahahahaha!!!!
@Alienicecooler,
Nah I don't think there will be replies their already tucked into bed or have moved on to another thread or just don't care. lol
I agree with you though I'm tired of the flooded pride that gets wasted on the comment board over Mcfan boys and Winduhs boys.
As krishnamurti put it:
"We all want to be on top, and this desire creates constant conflict within ourselves and with our neighbours; it leads to competition, envy, animosity and finally to war."
@AJH, "It needs a maintenance tool that needs to be run manually": It has. Try "repair file permissions".
I own both an Apple computer and a PC, and use them both frequently. They each have their own strengths and weaknesses as well as functionalities. I think of my MacBook Pro as a productivity computer (although I did Bootcamp W7 onto it for portable gaming), and my Dell XPS 420 as my primary gaming and long video (up to 2 hours) editing computer.
I'm not looking forward to Windows 7.
I'm looking at it.
I agree.
I got my first macbook and installed vista but never used it because leopard was better.
Then i got Snow Leopard and little things like my monitor adapter not working bothered me. I also got Windows 7 RTM from my schools MSDN. It is faster than Snow Leopard, and it has a better GUI. It also is Windows so it has more programs.
Apple won me over with Leopard, but Microsoft got me back with 7.
change it to fire leopard
As for Linux, over the past few years I've seen quite a few hard-core Linux and FreeBSD users switching to Mac for desktops/laptops. In the end they just want an Unix environment that can run a large range of both open source & commercial apps.
I would move it to /dev/null
I'm constantly getting the SBBOD... never happened in leopard... any ideas?
Go back to leopard.
i would try snow leopard cache cleaner.
Start Regedit,
go to HK_CCURRENT_USER, Software, Windows, ActiveSetup, {2179C5D3-EBFF-11CF-B6FD-00AA00B4E220}, Desktop, then create a DWORD value...
oh, wait....
Same thing is happening to me. It's a bitch.
goto the terminal and type:
defaults write com.apple.system persistent-others -array-add '{ "all-oss" = { "have" = 1; }; "their-own" = "complexities"; }'

Version 4 of Safari is the worst.
@SHotta
Don't just say somethings bad put some examples of why behind your comments.
Safari 4 is very nice, Although the bookmark bar could improve a little bit;
* Option to sort it in Alphabetical order in drop down.
* Top sites should be more customizable;
*Instead of small, medium, large, have option to change what sizes small medium and large are.
*Don't have it spring the last viewed site when editing, this has confused many users of what was happening.
perhaps you need
sudo shutdown -h now
and walk away
Same here, mostly in iTunes. When I subjected my MBP to my 2 TB music library it significantly slowed the loading of iTunes, which I totally expected. What I didn't expect was iTunes taking up to 10 minutes to load just because it was "loading libraries" that weren't even connected to the computer (all my music is on externals because there is no 2TB 2.5" hard drive as far as I know).
I also see a much slower shut-down/restart time than I did when I first got this laptop a month ago with Leopard, which is a small downside although not huge for me since I usually just close the lid and let the computer sleep. However, most everything else is faster: seeing speedier Finder navigation and faster than W7 start-up times, so it's not all bad.
HFS+ is the worst FS on the planet. You should try running fsck on your disk by going into Disk Utility and hitting verify disk
I used to get that wonderfull SBBOD so i erased my hard drive and did a fresh install of Leopard now im sorted!
Man I so wished I had a Mac. Too bad I am low on money right now :( I really, really want one.
Man that so wasn't the question.
Please stop Sk8ing.
Anyway, yeah I don't have a Snow Leopard so I can't answer the question. Sorry. If I did, I would love to answer it.
you know what you could do, host a party, get free windows, and install it on the computer you used to post that comment.
@ sk8er dude
Save your money.
Don't fall on your sk8board before your all done saving or you'll have to put it towards doctors bills.
Oh I know the first step, sell your board(s) and spend your time learning on how to get a better paying job if you don't have one already.
Good luck
HEHE i want that snow leopard runs on my PC officially. Will be very much happy to kick off my Windows from PC on that day. Then it will be only me, Linux and Leopard.
if Apple allowed OSX to run on regular PC hardware i would be more than happy to put it on my machine simply to see what all the fuss is about. i have nothing against the OS. i just would never ever pay they price they want me too for a laptop.
@kojo87
You don't get it. The reason Mac OS X works so well is because Apple make the software AND the hardware. It is because the software integrates so perfectly into the hardware that Mac less are likely to crash and have problems. If you tried to put Mac OS X on normal mix-n-match PC hardware, it would have a laundry list of problems, unfortunately. Plus, their hardware is much higher quality than most other PC vendors. Most companies don't use precision cut aluminum and glass, they just give you crappy plastic that cracks, warps, and feels just plain cheap. And they are much more power efficient at the wall as well as on batteries than PCs, case in point, their laptops last for 5, 7, and 8 hours, where most PC are lucky if they get 2-3. When you get a Mac, you do get the full premium package, and the cost is totally justified (maybe not for the MacBook Air, but for all the others).
^^^^
mindless mac drone
@ ZM
Macbook Airs have been known to exhibit cracks at the hinges and so does the Iphone 3G showing hairline cracks on the back casing.
Older MBP are known to have warped casing that shows with time (I personally own a MBP that has a slightly warped screen. I can literally see the curve)
This one is my personal opinion, but the macbook chassis does actually feel pretty cheap in terms of the feel of the material.
So if you really really think that apple's hardware are higher quality then you really do not know much about apple products. Also, their hardware is not exactly higher quality in any way. the manufacturer are still the same, they don't make their hardwares better just because it's for apple.
P.S. I've also forgotten to mention the case of the exploding iPhone in france as well as complaints about the new phones overheating thewhite casing to a light brown. (btw, if you want to, search past engadget posts. They're all there.)
