Oh, Dell. The laptop maker piqued everyone's interest for 30 seconds this morning with a glimpse of the
upcoming Adamo XPS, but when push comes to shove all it has to sell anyone is some laptops with lipstick on them. Seriously. The company is partnered up with "renowned nail lacquer experts" OPI (which has a storied history in predicting fashionable colors for upcoming seasons, according to those in the know), and that means there'll be 26 new colors and patterns in the Dell Design Studio for you to pick from the next time you buy one of Dell's various adequate laptops. Colors will include 20 "classics" like "I'm Not Really a Waitress" (pictured), as well as some seasonal shades like "Dear Santa," "Merry Midnight" and "Smitten with Mitten." They will not include specs or info on the Adamo XPS.
Update: Dell also showed off MLB designs for all 30 teams, with "fan," "classic," and "die-hard" designs for each, which will be available on Dell Design Studio, along with an
updated selection of Artist and Product (RED) lids. Check out PR shots of both sets of lids, along with hands-on shots, below.
wow! is the female-centric laptop market this strong? First the HP netbook runway modeling units...now this! Chanel and Dior edition laptops cant be far behind.
What about Barbies?
and I thought nilay was just being silly by calling it nail polish!
Ok. As a female I'm getting a little sick of being pandered to by some marketing SOB that thinks I can't handle computer specs. I don't need pretty colors, though I don't mind them. What I need is to know if your laptop is going to do what I need it to do, then we can talk fashion.
you go, girl!
evidently you're not the (niche) market Dell is pursuing. In their release, they say the most popular option for those laptops are color-based choices. So it's a business thang ... sort of like Apple's decision to go with glossy screens. They based it on market research-people overwhelmingly liked them. It was only later (again responding to the market) that they offered a $50 option for the same matte screen that used to be their sole option. That's just good business sense.
Oh I don't mind that they're offering color choices. I'm upset that they are promoting the color over the specs.
@Melissa
Er.. really? Dell is putting these colors on EXISTING laptops, ones many customers are familiar with. They've already touted the specs, and when purchasing a laptop on Dell's online shop, you get the overview of specs on the exact same page as the color blurb.
These aren't specific laptops, just new color options. And who says only females want cool colors?
its all about Melissa.
Yeah but this one has a new hat!
Hah, my wife loves OPI nail polish. The last time I counted she had literally 60 different colors. Better not let her see these.
They give us these, but still can't reinstate a MATTE BLACK LID? Christ.
What color is "I am not really a waitress" color? And is it similar to "I am studying to be an actress or a TV personality" color?
"Colors will include 20 "classics" like 'I'm Not Really a Waitress,' "
Seriously? I don't wanna say this is over-the-top, but.......
I want to see..."I am a cheap hooker in the afternoons". So when I am in a cafe at lunch I can pick one out.
...including Lady GaGa color, "I'm Not Really a Man"
Move color options isn't a bad thing even if I'm not female. Besides a company that already specializes in colors is prob. a good partner. whats the big deal?
How is this lipstick on a laptop if it's nail polish?
oh, this is called "applying lipstick on a pig"?
Ok. As a male I'm getting a little sick of being pandered to by some marketing SOB that thinks I can't handle computer specs. I don't need sports team logos, though I don't mind them. What I need is to know if your laptop is going to do what I need it to do, then we can talk sports.
+1
(I'd pick some OPI ones over any of the baseball ones)
haha nice
+1
Kudos.
oo my good i think i just had to puke a little, what the hell is this, does the head designer have a brain damage at DELL ???
If only they added a makeup compartments and en eyeliner pencil sharpener that doubles as a stylus, I'd be all over it.
Want that third Dodgers laptop so bad.

If only I didn't run the threat of getting jumped whenever I pulled it out (living in Bay Area now).
Sweet Bowling Ball Finish!
I maybe crazy but a few of those nail polish lids look really cool even many of the baseball lids are tastefully done.
However its a gimmick none the less.
Bowling ball finish is pretty cool. Not sure why they would go with some baseball theme though, that's just weird.
This may be beside the point, but this just re re re reassures me that I'm sticking with Mac. They don't have the capacity to design something this tasteless.
I got one of the new laptops with the Cleveland Indians graphic on it. I liked the laptop at first - it showed a lot of promise. But it quickly developed problems starting. Then, it couldn't close properly. Then, it died completely, a total brick. Then, it traded away Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez.
As an Indians fan, this is one of the funniest things I've read recently about the team. If you are a Cleveland fan, better to laugh than cry! +1 for me.
What the Dell?
"I'm Not Really a Waitress" (pictured), as well as some seasonal shades like "Dear Santa," "Merry Midnight" and "Smitten with Mitten."
How about, "I drank to much tequila last night and just puked all over my laptop". This just might also help to reduce theft.
Ha ha ha. Dell keeps churning out ugly and tacky laptops. On the other hand, Apple has the best industrial designers and their laptops are beautiful as it is durable.
