Sony VAIO X announced, starts at $1,299

Sony's just started a laptop-oriented event in NYC, but we just got our hands on what look like unpublished web pages for the new VAIO X and VAIO CW and an updated VAIO L machines. All of 'em now run Windows 7, of course, but the big news is apparent confirmation that the VAIO X will indeed have a 2GHz Atom -- although it's listed at a "2GHz Intel Processor," the 533MHz bus speed also listed pretty much gives it away. And no, you're not getting an Ion in this deal to make up for that starting $1,300 price tag -- it's Intel GMA500 graphics all the way. You're also getting an integrated Verizon 3G card and both the standard and extended batteries, however. Still is that insane? It's probably insane.

I always considered Sony Vaio laptops nice but wildly overpriced (although much less than Apple products), until one year ago my better half decided that I needed a Vaio TT and bought me one for Christmas.
Since then I realized that the the premium you're asked to pay for this premium Sony line of products is definitely worth paying.
11 months after purchase is still the best machine of its kind on the market and win7 only made it better and faster; after some minor pimping up I really can't imagine how my TT could get any better.

I hate it when a a company cripples performance on purpose so that sales of other lines dont drop. They almost all do it. If this had decent graphics it could be better than the VIAO TT and I would finally buy a Sony.

So it's a VAIO P with a bigger screen? I have a VAIO P and absolutely love it, but it's specs are only forgivable because it is pretty much in a league of it's own when it comes to portability and functionality, This only has a larger screen but smaller screen resolution than the P, 1366 x 768 vs 1600 x 768, other than that it is basically identical.

If it had better specs than the P I could understand it but, what is this, a P for people with bad eyesight?

i agree. sony is batshit crazy. ps3 was a deal when it first came out if you could afford it- a top end console with blu-ray. now its vice versa, an overprices blu-ray with an xbox 360 in it. (btw, not a console gamer is me). psp with a fake analog stick, then an overpriced psp Go with still a fake analog stick. wtf. now this? i'd rather buy a standard N270 netbook than this GARBAGE.

at least HP knows what it is doing. their DV2Z line and new mini 311 ION with XP shows that they give customer what they want. i can't wait until my 311 N280(with a 3GB 667 DDR3 ram with me already) arrives.

i'd rather buy a Gateway LT3103u for $379 than this sony hunk of b^&%h.

I could care less about the graphics card. The processor on the other hand may not be quite so awesome but the solid state drive and windows 7 should help some of the speed issues. Find me a netbook with a solid state drive, 14 hours of battery, cased in carbon fiber, that's thinner and lighter than a macbook air. Ya that's partly why it's $1300. And yes it probably deserves to be $1000, maybe even $900 but a few hundred dollars is a small price to pay knowing there's no other computer like it. (Check the specs on their websites if you don't believe me about it being slimmer than a macbook air. According to their websites, the sony viao x is .5 inches thick and the macbook air is .76 inches thick. The macbook air only curves up at the top to make it APPEAR to be thinner.)
