Sony VAIO X specs and pricing leak out -- 2.0GHz Atom, $1,499?
We're expecting the official launch of Sony's hot little VAIO X ultraportable later today, but Boy Genius Report claims to have some leaked specs and pricing to think over while we wait -- and if they're accurate, you'll be staring down the wrong end of a $1,499 price tag when all is said and done. Yeah, it's not unexpected, but still, ouch. For your trouble, you'll be getting what Sony's calling the "world's lightest notebook," weighing in a just 1.5 pounds of carbon-fiber with an 11.6-inch LED display, SSD, multitouch trackpad, and a 3.5-hour standard battery life that can be pushed to 14 hours using a "super-extended" battery. Okay, not bad, but what's running this show? Well, we've got some potentially bad news to report -- we've been told that the VAIO X will have a 2.0GHz Atom Z550 inside, just like the prototypes. Yep, that's another $1,499 Sony Atom laptop -- we'll wait for the official announcement to confirm before we start wringing our hands, but we're open to your lamentations in comments.

If it had a ULV processor, it would be far better. This is the replacement to the discontinued Vaio TT?
I am serious, is there new management at Sony that is trying to sabotage the company and send it to ruins? They used to make some nice things, I like their Vaio Z but I am pissed at them now with their PSP GO, PS3 hardware failures and charging $150 for repairs that are their fault, etc.
Just buy something like this, far far far better value for the money.

What the fuck happened to you Sony?
if theres anything short of an Ion in there, and GOD FORBID an intel graphics chipset, i will fly to Japan, and shoot someone at sony
It is SO going to have Intel integrated graphics.
Well if it does have an Atom Zxxx (BBBLLEEEHHH!), then it most likely will have GMA 500 graphics, BBBBBBBLLLLLLEEEEEEEHHHHH!
For a high-end computer manufacturer, Sony sure does make good television sets...
I have a Vaio VGN Z series and i am quite happy with it, however i still like the thinkpad x200 much more.
not even dual atom... nvidia ion or tegra? We're paying only for the carbon fiber casing for this item... At least use OLED or something...
I want it but I don't need it so I'm not buying!
if it has a wicked video card im in!
Wicked video card with atom?..the best you can expect is Nvidia 9400m/Ion which is also very unlikely as it would have been announced as major feature.
Typical Sony. More proof that looks don't mean a damn thing. Rock on Asus!
for that price I want it running an under-clocked Intel i7 mobile processor.
$1000 to take off 2 pounds, talk about an expensive diet.
for some reason when Sony goes for the niche market I cringe; as if the VAIO brand holds water anymore since they started using it on cheap laptops/notebooks.
haha and ppl say apple overcharges for the air... Sony sucks. Morons.
You'll be surprised how loyal Sony fanboys are. They're worse that Apple fanboys.
3.5hours? Really? That means real-life will be just 2 hours or so. And talk about high margins.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a big VAIO fan (on my third now), but I can't see paying that much for a Atom computer - not even from Sony. MSI is doing a better job of being Sony than Sony is with it's Slim X Series. Now if it could run OSX and had a touch interface then it might be worth it.
my heart was set on it. not paying 1000$ extra for 1/2" thinner laptop though. guess i'm going with the mini 311
i had this baby in my hands last week at a local sony show, it was loaded with Windows 7 and felt pretty sturdy and responsive with the standard installation (including the sony preinstalled apps). This thing is unbelievable thin and light. Think netbook mixed with a slimmed down airbook, but without that phat back. Can't believe they even can get a battery in this thing. Sure it's gonna be expensive because this is the only thing like it on the market when it comes out. As always Sony does it right and good, but the price will keep the main crowd away from it for some time. If you got hard cash for the slimmest netbook (because in the inside it's still a netbook) it;s the way to go. To engadet "How would you change" section : In the next 2 years i wanna see a version with GPS, HSDPA, multitouch screen, and maybe NVIDIA ion platform in there, or am i describing apple's upcoming tablet without a keyboard :)
1.6lbs... carbon fiber... removable battery... :p
Replacement for my TZ. I'm not going to complain about $1,499. The TZ was $2,000+.
2 years and regular and extended batteries still last 4+/7+ hours.
I have 2 higher end Vaio's and they have been stunning machines. Far superior to 92.3% of the junk out there.
I would have liked to get this but the specs are complete garbage.
Boo Sony. Shame on you for your fall from grace and your inept way of doing business.
agree, i just myself MPB instead. much better HW + aluminum shell + less expensive.
sony is getting gridy and their products dont make sense anymore. This is one example, PSP go another.
@Reza
You nailed it there man. When a MBP has more value for money than a windows laptop, its an utter disaster.
Go away trolls....I feel MBP is expensive but its a pretty good laptop so spare me the hate.
No one forced you to buy a Sony in the very first place. Why bitch about it?
Sony makes Apple look like an angel.
nice laptops cost money people (i.e.Sony, Macs & highend HPs)
There is a lot of difference between a nice laptop and a nice looking POS
e.g Macbook Pro,HP Envy,Adamo XPS,most Lenovos are nice laptops
Macbook Air,Vaio X, Dell Adamo are nice looking POS.
My Macbook Air does what this VAIO can do and more. In addition, the performance beats this VAIO, for the same price. I think that people will realize that the Macbook line up is a great value for your money, because it also includes the world's best operating system, Mac OSX.
Vaio X is an absolute disaster but that doesn make MBA a better computer. Its still a POS.
I wonder what is the black frame around the screen and keyboard for? Why can't they use all the real estate for a larger screen and a full size keyboard, the way it is done in Thinkpad X41 - edge to edge?
I'm afraid Sony has missed the mark again. The new Apple iPod exceeds this in utility, portability and price. So sorry, Sony, you make big misrake.
