HTC's HD2 gets sized up to the competition
We've already seen (and written) plenty on the HD2, and we've enjoyed our initial experiences with the device -- but now someone has finally sized up the massive, Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone with its touchscreen contemporaries... and the differences are downright shocking. Just take a look at this beast next to Apple's iPod touch (above) or the company's own Hero -- the displays on the older devices seem dwarfed by the HD2's 4.3-inch, 800 x 480 WVGA screen. There are lots of other revealing pictures in the writeup, but it's the side-by-side shots that seem most telling to us -- this is certainly the direction we're headed in for mobile devices. Hit the read link and take a full look for yourself.

No thanks, the bulge in my pants is big enough as is.
Uhh...
ya, I think you need a smaller wallet, all those receipts and declined credit cards can make a wallet above average.
*curtains*
it'll be a wide bulge not a thick bulge... i think it looks great only, problem is that HTC should take a leaf out of the book of Jobs and have only a few quality, flagship devices... too many just confuses the consumer.
or perhaps out of the iPad of Jobs
It isn't really that big, the screen is the same size as the one on my N800, but the bezel is a lot smaller.
that's one big bitch
WANT SO BAD!!!
Too big for me but then so is the iPhone and the i8910.
Que sera.
As an aside, why are Engadget showing a picture of an HD2 - which is a phone - against an iPod Touch - which is a PMP.
Is it because the iPhone is actually 5mm longer than the iPod Touch and the photo comparison wouldn't be quite so vivid if they actually showed that instead?
Surely not.
I think the iPhone is about to buy a big truck .... to compensate....
"As an aside, why are Engadget showing a picture of an HD2 - which is a phone - against an iPod Touch - which is a PMP."
Engadget didn't take that photo, the Russian site that did the review did. It's probably all they had around to compare to.
@Chris
Indeed. However since Engadget have had access to both devices they certainly could have and if they wanted a true comparison they could have shown the shot of the HD2 against the Hero which was in the linked article.
It just seems a bit disingenuous although it's probably not intended to be.
from deuce bigalow- "That's a huge bitch!"
Thats why I still keep my 1 yr old diamond.
@ 10minutehobo:
I want it badly too. But, no Verizon?
OH COME ON
Then take that rolled-up sock out of your pocket.
I don't see much of a problem with the larger size of the HD2. You get a bigger display and maybe a larger battery as a result. Look rather heavy duty and as long as it's functional, all well and good. I just don't like that it uses MicroShyte WinMoan, but I guess if that's want you want then more power to ya.
I'm wondering if there is such a thing as an optimum size for cellphone devices. Some sort of ergonomic sweet spot. I'd have no problem carrying the HD2 as long as it did everything I needed it to do well. I think the larger display is nice as long as the resolution goes up with it. I'm not looking for any dainty devices.
@Average White Boy
I'm not sure, with the way phone sizes are fluctuating between sizes of MID's, it's quite hard to tell which phone would be the best size. But for right now touchscreen phones have been coasting on 3.5-3.8 inches, so I would say that's what most people are used to.
"When parsing apparatus of the bones we have, of course, we find it not one or two minuses (already assume will be the first time), but now I can say with a clear conscience in the future to close your eyes and share their personal, completely subjective impressions."
Great job!
RargggHH! LEO EAT IPHONE!! *nom,nom,nom*
I'd definitely try to pants one of these.
No one is buying new pants, not because of the phone size, because WinMo is DEAD!
Needless to say, HTC will die along with WinMo if they continue their path with WinMo.
WindowsFTW(?): Whatever lets you sleep at night, buddy.
@Hardcore - That's not what she said!
Troll & Fanboy Countdown in 3...2...1...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lol what's to troll about on this post? I'm typing this on an iPhone but I still admit the thing's huge
nice
thats really big
that's what she sa... oh nevermind.
From the review, it's apparently as big as a shovel.
I can't believe how washed out that iPod screen is compared to the HD2.
But, technology marches on. After all, the iPod touch came out a while ago now... last month...
Some people will tell you it's just the viewing angle... *cough*Apple fans*cough*
Or, alternatively, the HD2's screen could be on a darker setting and the camera has overexposed the part of the photo showing the iPod's screen.
I've never, ever seen my iPhone screen look like this, but it's nice to see them trying to make the screen look like crap— quality review...
Take a photo of your computer monitor, preferably at highest brightness and with a bright background, and your monitor will probably look the same as the iPod screen. Due to the very short camera exposure time the resulting image will be too bright and lack any darker details. You can clearly see that the HTC screen doesn't look great either, it has low contrast and washed-out blacks. I'm sure the iPod screen was set at a higher brightness. These pictures are only good for size comparisons, for screen comparisons they are awful. Of course they did not do this to make Apple look bad but just because they didn't bother (they are only meant for size comparison anyway) or because they didn't know better.
But whom am I telling, since you believe that is what the iPhone screen looks like you probably never even have held one in your own hands. Your desperate try to discredit anyone who opposes you as being an Apple fanboy pretty much proves that since they could come up with real arguments.
@Yoshi
Stop whining like a little pussy. The display is better because it's higher resolution. Is it really that difficult to comprehend?
@mark: you can have a screen with a bigger resolution that looks worse
@Mark Anderson
Actually, your the one thats whining like a little pussy, or a little bitch. Pick one, or both if your honest.
"As an aside, why are Engadget showing a picture of an HD2 - which is a phone - against an iPod Touch - which is a PMP.

Because engadget took that photo right? Everything Yoshi wrote is true, you claim everyone is an apple fanboy, even if their argument is legit. Stop making conspiracies out of nothing, quit calling engadget apple lovers, and realize your the "fanboy".
Can't deny that the HD2 OBVIOUSLY looks better in every way though.
@Hot Rod
Your rage rage is sweet.
@Mark Anderson
What does a higher resolution have to do with color? Two totally different things mate...
Oh FFS.
High resolution has nothing to do with colour at all. It means that the image quality will generally be better. There's no need to moan about 'camera angles' and 'default settings' just because someone points out that it looks a lot better - which it does - and when they then accuse someone of 'omg liek uv never held an iPone!1!' because they point out that newer products might actually, you know, use better and more modern parts - like screens - they deserve to be told to STFU.
And to clear things up further, when someone else then then whines about me commenting on comparing the size of the phone in a thread that has nothing to do with that since it's about the perceived screen quality they deserve to be mocked.
Am I being sufficiently clear now. I mean I suspect his comment will be greyed out of existence but one has to try.

Some people prefer Android because we have already invested in several paid apps on that platform.
best Borat voice - "it's nice! I like!"
Would rather it ran Android though.
Dual booting andriod and windows mobile would be pretty cool so you get best of both OSes/
Again, you would rather it ran Android because...? Now there seems to be a lot of blind love for Android even though, really, it hasn't proven to be above and beyond the competition at all. We've reached a saturation point where the OSes all function similarly enough and most importantly, allows us to do what a "phone" is supposed to do - make phone calls and texting.
For the record, I like Android but no more than the iPhone OS, WebOS or WinMo. I choose my phones based on the hardware now because we've finally reached the stage where the hardware has caught up to the performance requirements of the OSes.
Unfortunately, the only Android devices I like are the Cliq and the X3 but I definitely like the Toshiba K01 and HTC HD2 more.
I just wish people would stop the worship for a particular OS and it's especially annoying here on Engadget where you can't go without someone commenting, "gee...if only it ran such and such...". Enough is enough. Quit it already and move on.
"We've reached a saturation point where the OSes all function similarly enough and most importantly, allows us to do what a "phone" is supposed to do - make phone calls and texting."
Except they really don't, and frankly if you're getting little enough functionality out of your phone that it seems that way to you, spending this kind of money on a phone is more or less a waste.
Android has still a long way to go before it's as functional as WinMo. The only area where it trumps the latter is in the UI front, which HTC has taken care of nicely.
The whole "I wish it ran Android" thing is just plain stupid. It's a decent OS, but it's nowhere as desirable as some people make it out to be.
Jeez, just because I prefer Android over Winmo doesn't make it "stupid" or "blind love". It's just my opinion, my own personal taste.
Winmo sucks, and has done for ages, why do you think HTC have gone to such lengths to hide it?
They did a pretty good job of hiding Android too (ref: Hero; HTC the), so what's your excuse now? ;)
OK, I can see I've arrived in a hornet's nest of Winmo fanboys, so I'll just leave you all with your tiny little 'OK' buttons.
Fair comment with HTC Sense on the Hero, the bog standard Android interface definitely needs updating. Hell, even the iPhone interface looks like it needs a lick of paint.
However, Windows Mobile is notoriously not finger friendly, read any review of 6.5 (or just use it!) and you can see that. This may be slightly better with this device, but only because it has such a gargantuan screen. (Which I am ever so slightly in love with!)
My main point is that no-one should chastise anyone else because they prefer a different phone OS to any other. I don't berate you for liking Winmo... I would just rather use Android, tis all.
Haha, sorry man; I'm not a regular WinMo user. Rather, I use S60.
Your original point of contention was that WinMo has a terrible UI. I don't deny this and this is exactly what HTC has successfully fixed. There are no more tiny OK buttons and this is not applicable to just the HD2. Even an old X1 with a cooked Manila-ROM is eons more finger friendly than the bone-stock WinMo UI. That tackled, there's very little to find fault with WinMo (6.5 is not laggy anymore, Skyfire delivers full flash, etc.) HTC is aiming for a highly productive device with this and its possibilities are just not achievable with the current state of Android. That's all I'm saying.
If you want similar specs on an Android device, you better wait for the HTC Dragon, which supposedly runs Android 2.0. And this is where the OS hopefully comes of age.
Really?
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2009/10/wm6-caps-01-sm.jpg
Seems Engadget disagree - plenty of little crosses and 'OK' buttons in their review.
I'm not even a huge Android fan tbh, I still currently prefer the iPhone (mainly for the great video capture, iTunes integration and app store).
Just that I dislike Winmo, and it seems a shame to have this great hardware running only Winmo.
Still, I'll play with it when it's out I'm sure, and give it a fresh pair of eyes :)
Engadget is commenting on the stock WinMo UI. HTC has its own connection manager that bypasses most stock WinMo screens, except for maybe the ones you access once in a bluemoon.
Even so, I'd advice you to take a look at XDA-developers, where they have released some ROMs based on a beta version of WinMo (Some speculate that this is a future update) that has the start button, OK button and most menu commands at the bottom of the screen. Much bigger than the default ones.
Yeah I have seen that actually, but one of the reasons I ditched Winmo in the first place, is that I kept flashing my device every five minutes for new features / bugfixes / etc etc.
I know that's the reason a lot of people like Winmo, but I got a bit carried away and kept flashing my Touch HD a couple of times a day at one point, and it still didn't even play music properly... which was cack.
You know, the small ok and "x" buttons on the screen aren't really a problem at all. It's not like you have to get the stylus out and tap them exactly in the centre. A jab with your thumb anywhere in that area works just as well...
Damn...can the man just want Android on it without you ignoramuses going off like a bunch of underage kids?
You all are acting just like the person you're trying to paint him as. His original post said nothing bad about Windows...it just said he wanted Android.
Grow up and learn comprehension and understanding before going off on one of your kiddy tirades.
But I do agree. I personally like the widgets, notifications, constant sync, etc. of Android. So the hardware with my preferred software would make this a 100% buy for me.
I can't wait for them to make a high-powered Android device like this. I'm glad WinMo is still getting these wonderful devices. Love it!
Thanks dude :)
Nothing against Winmo - horses for courses, just that I prefer Android out of the two.
I see there are obviously a few Winmo fanboys in the house, being as my comment was marked down.
hey-ho!
Even if this device doesn't eventually get android, I'm sure HTC will bring out something just as kick ass very soon.
Dpes make you wonder what Apple's next move is going to be though doesn't it?
Even the iPhone 3Gs is starting to look a bit out of date next to this device!
It's got nothing to do with being an Ignoramus. Android is not at a point where it can fully utilize what the handset offers. That's all. In the future it will, but as of now; the platform is too raw.
Not everyone needs fanboi logic to counter somebody else's opinion.
Dear American carrier(specifically looking at you Verizon), please bring this damn device out on your network so I, and many other can purchase one.
If you think that all of the operating systems are now at a similar level, then plainly you do not know enough about it to even speak on the subject.
FFS I did not reply to this comment. FU engadget.
You DID reply. Whether you wanted to reply to AI's post or not is another matter entirely.
some more sizing pictures
http://www.mobilebulgaria.com/tests/view.php?id=102
I really really love everything about this phone, except the size.. it's gargantuan!! At this point, carrying it in your pocket will be seriously inconvenient for a lot of people I'd imagine.
Why can't the put the 1GHz Snapdragon and the extra memory on something with a 3.6" inch screen like the Imagio? That would be perfect if you ask me.
Here's another size comparaison, stangley it looks smaller this time :
http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2009/10/07/16-minutes-long-htc-d2-hands-on-size-comparaison/
as somebody else said above it's because that photo is compared to the ipod touch, which is 5.5 mm shorter than the iphone. i had no idea, but i checked wikipedia and it's true. so yeah, the hd2 doesn't look as bad compared to an iphone. i'm still gonna want to check one out in person before i buy though.
For some reason, im in Love with it, love the size
the reason why it's weird is because yes it's obviously bigger, but not that much, the reason it looks huge is the fact that there's very little bezel going around, if you click and check out the bezel on the other devices you see why this thing looks so much bigger.
my god, are they seriously not bringing this to the U.S.? I would truly consider getting out of my at&t contract for one of these sexy motherf'ers
That thing is the size of God's ass, and I can't hardly wait.
HTC is heading in the right direction by excreting WinMo from their business but releasing a kit like this with WinMo still in it? Quite silly. This should've had Android to make it appealing to consumers.
Wow, this is getting way out of hand!
@sludgeball
You were saying something about "Apple fans"? I couldn't hear you over the yells of "THEY DID THAT ON PURPOSE TO MAKE APPLE LOOK BAD".
Yeah, it's a bit wider and taller than the iPhone, but just look at how much more screen space the HD2 takes advantage of! All that unused space on the iPhone is a joke.
more hands on of the touch/multi-touch capabilities!
It looks like HTC removed a dedicated power button? At least that's what I'm gathering from this hands-on preview. What gives?
The device is so big you won't be able to reach out the power button if it was placed at the top of the phone (you 'ill need to use both hands). So they decided to use the hang/cancel button instead I guess.
Yeah, but apparently you can't turn the screen off either.
Gunning for the HD2 when it comes out! Though I do hope my pocket can handle it...
"And what the hell is HD2? Twice the definition?"
that proves my theory, that most iphone users have no idea what the hell is going on in the tech world, thats why they follow the crowd.
because of this whole touchscreen business phones are getting bigger instead of smaller, and more expensive instead of cheaper. Some people don't care bags everywhere and don't want to look like they're an IT guy with a phone strapped to their belt. Make more phones like the VK 2000 please.
The HTC HD2 has 2.5 times as many pixels as the iPhone so it can display 2.5 times as much of a given webpage at full resolution, but strictly speaking it has only 1.58 times the resolution of the of the iPhone. The screen is a two-dimensional surface so to double the resolution you would need to double the number of pixels in BOTH the horizontal and vertical directions - i.e. you need four times as many pixels to double the resolution.
...oops, I meant that comment as a response to the thread below this one.
pomp and circumstance, bells and whistles. Who gives a fuck! My iphone 3GS(16 gig) ain't going no where baby.Lets see that HTC get all bad ass like the iphone with a media ecosystem out the box.
And what the hell is HD2? Twice the definition?
HTC brings out nothing but disposable, expensive geek hardware.
And you bring nothing but disposable, pointless iDouche posting.
Oh look, a (-) button!
@WindowsFTW, Don't forget the 5 megapixel autofocus camera with dual LED flash and standard 3.5mm audio jack.
And the removable battery, multi-tasking capabilities, and... yeah, you get the picture.
"expensive geek hardware."
and I don't even WANT to tell him how much the 3GS is unlocked...
i think i might need to upgrade my pockets before i can carry this thing around...
lol
cargo pants and dockers will hold this...
This would have sold with Android. But with WinMo? it has less than a year of life in it so why even bother.
Don't worry, WinMo won't be around for much longer. Even The Gartner Group says WinMo has less than a year of life in it. And as for Project Pink:
Employees “hate the product”
Much of the team uses iPhones around the office
http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2009/10/05/microsofts-project-pink-might-be-dead-in-the-water/
MS fanboys are like cult fanatics around here. Wake up, Microsoft has shut itself out of the mobile OS business; time to switch to superior smartphone alternatives. For WinMo that's pretty much anything else.
Woah, what happened to EXTUSB? I thought HTC wasn't on the Micro USB team. How are we supposed to get tv out of it? Change is scary!
WHy are they comparing a phone to a PMP? Am I the only that sees something wrong with that?
Because obviously they didn't have an iPhone to compare it to, and the iPod touch is roughly the same face size with the exact same screen size so it makes for a very similar comparison. :/
Ok.. I really thought this phone was amazing.. But seeing how much bigger it is than my iPhone.. I don't think I can justify buying it... I already think the iPhone is really big (surface area, not thickness), so I couldn't use this phone.. It's really huge.. Like way too big.. >_>
unlike the palm pre this would not fit in a beer´s mug :)
give me a smaller one (similiar size to the iphone) and i'll be sold!
