HP Mini 311 set for spec bump, Windows 7 Professional
With the overdue passing of Windows XP into the next world comes the cheery note that Microsoft's ceiling on netbook specs will also be no more -- and the Mini 311 is among the first to get upgraded in time for the new king of Windowstan. The already competent performer will be getting the full (non-LE) ION treatment, max memory of 3GB, an 80GB SSD option or up to 320GB of the old school storage stuff, and a choice of Windows 7 flavors up to the Professional level. This info comes from the machine's maintenance guide, so we can't be certain of when the upgrades will be ready for consumption, but HP's track record would suggest the answer to that is soon.

We're getting there! Finally.
true... but slowly steering away from focusing on what I think needs to be addressed in all netbooks. Battery life... All that ION goodness comes at a price.
can't wait for it to be released in the UK.
According to amazon it will be on the 22nd October. But the pre-order page has gone off-line already.
Plug in a 2GHz Atom processor in there and I'm sold.
i was thinking that not just 2ghz, it should dual core. sold x 2 !
screw it, why not make it a Quad while we're at it! lol....
HP mini 330?
thank you please
This is the one I've been waiting for!
Now, does anyone know where one can get ahold of a 3GB stick of DDR3 1066??? I don't think they make it, do they?
According to the article, the memory upgrades are 1GB+1GB for 2GB, and 1GB+2GB for 3GB.
Now if they wouild just slot a ULV processor in there, instead of an Atom... and make sure the screen is matte, with a higher resolution than 1024x600....
From the original article:
"Added 2GB RAM (plus the 1GB on-board), total 3GB"
Got it, guess I should have read instead of skimmed. :)
So, the HP Mini 311 has 2 dimms, then. One soldered and one free. Perfect!
Yes!!!!
best netbook
And there goes the value proposition on this. I do appreciate the spec bumps, but the inevitable price bumps that will come with it, will make this a hard sell when shopping it against a regular laptop.
I get the portability factor of it all. And I reaaaalllllyyyy want one. But I'll have a hard time justifying the price if it creeps into the $500 or $600 range.
We'll wait and see :)
couldn't agree more.
the selling point of netbook is the low cost and the portability.
Needless to day, Mini 311 has portability.
The cost is the unknown factor.
Push it over 699, i am sorry.
this isn't notebook anymore. i could get other laptop by then.
Seems like netbook makers are just pumping out small laptops. This is why I was hoping we'd see more movement towards smartbook, Foleo-like netbooks that go for about $200 and run all day on one charge. I really only need web, email and word processing.
I don't think it'll cost more than $500 almost fully loaded (everything except the SSD)
God has blessed this netbook with beauty and German engineering.
Umm care to elaborate your post? HP is American, Intel is American, Microsoft is American. I wonder which part is German?
With the atom cpu , that specs bump doesn't make much sense .
AMD 's congo platform is more interesting.
Only problem with the Congo is the hit you take with the battery life.
Does this take a normal 2.5 sata HD or those stripped down mini-netbook ones? I have a extra 2.5 SSD (vertex) that i'm saving for this. It would stuck if it didn't fix. :P
The screen size isnt 1024x600.... its 1366 x 768
Hmm, that's a little annoying. They Just released the 311. I picked mine up because I'm not interested in Windows 7.
Now less than a week after it shows up at my house (and i ordered it on release day) they're talking about bumping the specs?
I'm use to tech being outdated quickly but this is close to pre-outdating.
I guess i do take consolation in the fact that i'm happy with mine, and that it will (hopefully) have cost
less than the pimped out one. but still, it would have been nice to have the option.
i got 2 on release as well. they're indeed awesome. hopefully i'll be able to get dimm upgrades for em.
going to order 2 more of the upgraded spec ones even if i can't. i still have use for the ones i bought even if they can't be uber-graded
And I agree, 600 dollars for an atom powered anything is asinine..
Throw in a Core 2 CULV and I'm sold.
That's the HP dm1. Comes with Intel graphics though.
Oh well.
not much difference between ion and ion le
http://www.liliputing.com/2009/09/the-difference-between-nvidia-ion-and-ion-le-not-much.html
The difference is that the source article says that the 311 will get LE but this article says non-LE so which is it?
I ordered one of the current models last night. I am going to use it for my Windows 7 launch party.
From what I have read about this is that the 2gb limit is because of the current XP operating system limitations. Load Win 7 on it and you are ser for 3gb goodness.
The memory limit is simply 32-bit operating systems versus 64-bit versions (64-bit can utilize more).
If they get all this in with good battery life, I might be sold. It's somewhat contingent on Adobe figuring out hardware acceleration for Flash video, since Atom + Ion still can't do much with Hulu/Netflix.
Sweetening the deal because Ion 2 is coming out soon?
Hah, and I just threw down on the Mini 311; mine should be showing up later this week. Figures. Oh well, what can you do? I don't want Windows anyway, so maybe I'll just pull mine apart and put in a 64 GB SSD, once I get Ubuntu running happily on it...
Excellent news. Looks like I'll be buying my first netbook when these come out. 3GB, SSD, and 3G.

I just wish they got rid of that stupid, shiny, patterned plastic lid. (And stopped marketing their patterns like some kind of revolution in design). They've been sensible enough to _not_ have that shiny plastic on the inside (the people who design their Pavilion notebooks could learn a lot), but having it on the outside just makes scratches and fingerprints plainly obvious and is really not that attractive.
Agreed. I can't even figure out what kind of pattern is on the outside of the 311. If you look closely, it appears to be ass stubble. I'd rather it just be plain. (Oh but I'm so buying one of these uprated ones anyway.)
Woooot!!!
thanks for the info !!
why is Hp so stingy at least the atom 330 and 2 gigs of ram
Based on HP's 9/15 press release, the Windows 7 model should be available for order on 10/18. I would think that would be a good time to release these updates. http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/newsroom/press/2009/090915xb.html
Damn I know! I bought it on launch day too! While its awesome, I think I'm gonna return it and get this one.
I just hope they take it back with pirated Windows 7 RTM on it lol
So what's the consensus here? I was _this_ close to buying a 311 this morning, but now I feel like waiting. I don't really care about Windows 7 as I have an MSDN subscription, but the full blown ION makes me want to wait. Which would be a better buy: current model, or new model with full ION and W7 premium? I wanted to stay under $500, which with the N280, N wireless and Bluetooth was about what I was going to have to pay.
Problem seems that something new is always going to be right around the corner.
Actually, the ION and ION LE are by all accounts the same silicon, just the ION LE isn't able to do DX10 so that it could be used in devices meeting Microsoft's definition of a netbook, so they could sell them with XP. I'd be surprised if they don't have a flash upgrade at some point to field-upgrade to full functionality.
Well, it's Oct 18 and I ordered a fully configured White Mini 311 w/ 320 gig HD, Wireless WAN network card which added $125 to the price, Wireless N w/ bluetooth 3Gig Ram. Windows 7 Home Premium, (only WIN 7 version offered).
What happened to the rumored 80 gig SSD?
It came to USD $800 before tax and shipping.
CULV and i7 processors?
I can't justify spending for those until USB 3.0 is on laptops.
USB 3.0 will change EVERYTHING. For now it is a best kept secret.
A network card with USB 3.0 is already certified. If people knew
how close it is, sales would plummet until 2010 for all except the cheapest tech.
Does the mini 311 comes with a umts modul?
well I just ordered a new hp mini 311, BUT i ordered it with windows XP sp3 instead of Windows 7 because I have msdn. The ordering page says it comes with NVIDIA ION and it doesnt say NVIDIA ION LE anymore. Does anyone think/know if they are no longer shipping the ION LE version?
im concerned because i ordered the one with xp, that they are gonna send me the LE version! i want dx10!
i note that the "description" page for the 311 says its ION LE, but when you actually customize it, it says ION.... previously when i customized it(a week ago), it did infact say ION LE..... hmmm.......
When it will available in Mumbai, India. We r waiting.
