Walt Mossberg leaks the BlackBerry Storm 2
Well, well, looks like Unkie Walt accidentally programmed his calendar to publish a combined preview of the Motorola CLIQ and the BlackBerry Storm 2 a little earlier than everyone else. Nothing particularly insightful on the CLIQ, but Mossy says RIM's latest is a big improvement over the original Storm -- mostly because of the revamped touchscreen, which provides "faster, smoother typing." Yep, that's pretty much what we were expecting. Walt's also high on the inclusion of WiFi and the portrait-mode keyboard, but ain't nothing gonna make that BlackBerry browser any good, and the big guy says the touch interface still feels tacked to the rapidly-aging BlackBerry OS. So Walt -- now that you've confirmed RIM and Verizon's big holiday launch, what can you tell us about pricing and availability? "Likely to appear in November at around $200," you say? Thanks, buddy. You're always so dependable. Video that we took of a broken Storm 2 prototype in May after the break, tons of pics in the gallery

Am I the only person on earth you hates Walt Mossberg. I don't know why but I wish he'd just disappear mysteriously off the face of the earth.
" I'm Walt Mossberg....................SHUT UP"
why is mossberg yelling 'shut up' in that quote?
i am a little confused.
could you provide a citation please?
thanks!

be happy. he didn't mention the iphone ONCE in his whole run through w/ the device, but then again...he never gave us a software tour. only time will tell how many times he will be saying ''iphone'' in his storm2 software walkthrough
Does anyone know how to get engadget commenting to work with 1password?
The Engadget comment system barely works on its own, don't expect it to perform much better with addons.
I don't know, but it's working fine for me with XMarks.
Does anybody else think we could use a system more akin to a forum? Or a completely separate forum in addition?
It works fine for me with 1Password.
I love the Democracy of this Forum. Voting the Hillaries down, and the Obamas up
Does VZW do the right thing for its customers who field tested their first Storm? Right, thought so...
No kidding. After my experience with the Storm 1, I'm jumping ship to the HD2. No idea what ship that may be though...
the storm and storm 2 are both pos compared to any of the new htc phones. never understood why anyone liked any blackberry phones to begin with. seriously, I have several friends and coworkers that buy them, but they dont offer anything nearly as flexible as windows mobile
Verizon will be offering upgrades to original Storm buyers 1 year after their original purchase date.
@ Annoying Poster
Windows Mobile is indeed flexible - i'll give it that. Too bad it isn't also usable (with possible exception of Win Mob 6.5 & 7 - hey they might have *finally* not created a complete dog after over 10 years of trying...). Blackberries have been consistently outselling Windows Mobile for eons because even when the OS was archaic for not having any multimedia features or any ability to write truly powerful software, it did what it was supposed to do and did it way better than Window Mobile ever did. I remember thinking 8 or 9 years ago "there is no way that RIM isn't going to be obliterated by MS - they have a HUGE head start and a much more powerful OS. They just have to get this whole email / messaging / connectivity shit down in a way that my Dad can use". Know what? They never did....even after losing hundreds of millions of dollars propping up there pathetic OS that would have bankrupted an independent company 10x over, MS kept plugging away, gaining a foothold of market share through sheer dollar attrition - NOT by creating a usable or competitive product. RIM on the other hand (despite the embarrassment that is the Storm) sells well for a reason. As does the iPhone. And Android. If Windows Mobile was a separate company they would have gone out of business years and years ago...
After buying the storm 1, I will be forever cynical about RIM's promises.
I love my storm but my only gripe is the reboot times. They're killer!!! Sometimes taking up to 5 minutes for the phone to boot.
Thats a big a$s phone..can RIM roll out anything more slimmer?
I really hope Verizon doesn't screw this one up. I feel like they are banking on this phone a little too much. I know Verizon wants to focus on the service, but come on! It's ridiculous that VZW customers have to wait for a sequel to one of the crappiest phones ever to get excited about a phone. Am I right?
Can Engadget be any more far behind? There are many videos of the Storm 2 in full force by Salamandrin and there is a lot of information leading towards a release date in October. If you want information on the Storm 2, go to www.crackberry.com
Or if you have been reading engadget.com you would realize Storm 2 has been covered numerous times.
sigh...work requires a blackberry, work will buy me a new one starting this month...and i am a huge fan of the blackberry's (for work). i will not consider anything but verizon because AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint literally does not hold a candle to Verizon's service in los angeles. yet with only the tour and storm2 available, i feel like i am being forced to choose between a redo (hi storm2!) and needs to be redone (hi tour!) phone.
Most reviewers with the latest hardware/software are saying the Storm2 is what the original Storm should of been. That the difference is day and night.
The storm 2 sounds nice? except the browser part
With all the leaks since day one, never doubted that the hardware would be a few steps above the first Storm and it being a huge improvement. But like the first Storm, it's flaw is the OS - it's just not meant to be a touchscreen OS. Now that RIM has solved the hardware side, they should really start creating a new OS just for the Storm and future touchscreen handsets, don't really mind the current OS for QWERTY handsets.
Ya know, people have such a problem with the storm, but I have had one for months and I don't see what the complaints are all about. Maybe its because I haven't had much time with WinMo or Android, but this is the best phone i've ever owned.
why do people care THAT much about the web browser? i mean whats so bad about it?
Maybe they get paid to sit around coffee shops and browse the internet all day? The rest of us must be dumbasses since we have jobs that demand productivity. That said, the BB browser does need help.
i mean i have an iphone 3g and im gonna get the blackberry bold 2.....the bb web browser isnt amazing but its not like TERRIBLE. regardless, i feel that for messaging the blackberry is amazing
This phone was also "leaked" on CNET, Bonnie's preliminary review video is out(she doesn't really like it). I'm beginning to think these really aren't leaks if people who do reviews are being allowed to comment on it.

Its really slow, the column view (mobile view) is a joke, you have to zoom in on the page about 5 times before you can even click a link, stuff like that. Well, I guess I wouldn't have known any better if I didn't get opera right away. That's what every blackberry owner should do anyways.
Oops, meant to be a reply to @sonic4390
Good Mossberg good :)
Don't think its a Leak. Crackberry.com published their review of an official unit and said that the embargo expired @ 12am EST 10/15.
cnet has a first look at it !

Walt didn't leak anything. He published this today like everyone else because RIM told him he could.
"Walt's also high on the inclusion of WiFi and the portrait-mode keyboard"
Huh, the first Storm also had portrait qwerty.
Also, I really don't think this is a leak. Cranberry did an official review a while back.
Cranberry? I meant Cranberry; damn predictive tablet writing.
Dammit, What in trying to write is CrackBerry.
Good Mossberg good :)
