CE-Oh no he didn't! Part LXIV: Microsoft's Greenberg says Xbox will outsell PS3 for 'entire generation'
Didn't think Microsoft exec Aaron Greenberg could top himself after saying that Hulu on 360 was like "asking out a really hot chick on a date?" Well, think again, 'cause Greenberg recently sat down with GameInformer for a fairly wide ranging interview, and he took the opportunity to toss a few bombs in Sony's direction. The biggest of those is that he's "confident" that the Xbox 360 will "not only outsell PS3 for the full calendar year, but for this entire generation" -- adding that it's "similar to a game of baseball, it is not about just winning one inning, but instead being able to win the game by consistently delivering across all nine innings." Greenberg also went on to say that Sony's expected good showing in the September sales numbers is merely a "short term bump," and that "it is not a real concern to us." Hit up the link below for the complete interview, which also includes talk of the Zune HD, Xbox Live, and Microsoft's plans for the holiday season.[Via PC World]

And trust me, this guy knows about asking hot chicks out on dates...
Well, with a wallet like his... even if he had the most hideous face, weighted 500lbs, no limbs, saliva dripping off his mouth and he constantly farted... He still would have dated more hot chicks than anyone in three lives in a row.
Of course it will outsell the PS3, I mean damn I always love watching Hd Dvd's, its so much better than Blue Ray.
@derrik
i buy a gaming system to play games. not to watch movies. not to have a ghetto version of the wii remote that resembles your father's dildo.
but to play games.
> "He still would have dated more hot chicks than anyone".
Geeks could learn from this guy. Notice the strategic use of a goatee to hide the double chin, and the slightly cheeky look hinting at wild pleasures in the bedroom no doubt involving a connoisseur's selection of fully charged gaming peripherals. Oh yes, he knows how to make the ladies squeal.
@Light Speed
Oh really? Well, do me a favor then. Next time you power up your Xbox., don't go on facebook, netflix or twitter, don't talk to anyone on Xbox Live, delete your avatar, delete all the music and movies from your hard drive and just sit there and play games, alright?
Welcome to the twenty first century. Single-purpose devices are a thing of the past.
Xbox Rulez!!!!
I cant find any reason why people wanna buy the shitty console PS3 over 360.
bluesky: +1
"...consistently delivering across all nine innings..."
yeah, i know, it's like dating with 9 hot chicks now rite?
@loocas
but what's the point? they are screwing another dude while you feed them (both probably) and years later, she takes half your money and goes to live with the guy that cleaned your pool. Of course, there's another hottie waiting to split your half. And your kids, are really the poolboy's kids.
BULLSH1T!!! SONY ROCKS
of course it will outsell.... the idiot Xbox fanboys will buy new ones after theirs RROD..... Perfect way to keep selling is to keep breaking
Well hes not lying is he?
Are you posting are you?
I don't know what you're talking about do I?
That's One Ugly Bastard.
But he has girth where is counts for a lot of women...
...in his wallet ;)
and length in his forehead
...and a warehouse full of xboxes!!!
He keeps his penis in his wallet?
Well of course it will when you consider all the Arcades/Elites RROD sufferers go buy.
You may have misssed it, but the RRoD is covered by an extended warranty. I'd have much prefered if my box hadn't RRoD'ed but getting it repaired for free from MS was painless. The only reason I would consider buying another 360 isn't because I needed to replace a broken one, but because the 250 gig drive in the Modern Warfare package is a hell of a lot more appealing than the gimpy 20 gig drive I have now (granted if they went the Sony route of user replaceable that would be a non-issue - what the hell is wrong with the world when sony is actually *not* the propriatary one).
But people are actually buying new ones instead of sending them in sometimes... it's pretty sad...
That would include me. My launch day console died so I went out and bought an Elite.
I sold the broken one for parts on eBay and upgraded to HDMI, 120gb, and a color that matched my TV, entertainment center, and speakers. It was completely worth it.
Many people's XBoxs fall out of warranty now...other people don't care to go through the long process and would either throw down a few bucks for the Arcade and put their HD on it, or take the chance to go big with the Elite. If my 360 RRODs again I'm going for an Elite.
They must be including all the 360s that RRoD. I just got my 2nd RROD'd.
What surprises me is the fact that a lot of people bought more than one console after there broke down. Nothing should get that many chances of failing you, besides the Gov.
@monkey
Nobody buys another 360 when the RRoD. Microsoft has a 3 year warranty for this specific problem, You ship it in for free and they send you a new one for free in just the time it takes to get from your home to Washington.
Yeah, when as many of them have been sent back as they have done I wonder if outselling the PS3 in number of shipments will really mean anything. When you have to repair and resend a system back 54% of the time, it must really kill the profits off the system.
To all the people spouting the warranty excuse...Not all 360's are under warranty anymore. There are many individuals, like myself, whose 360's 3-year warranty expired. I even called them, 4 days after my warranty expired to renew it (I would have renewed sooner, but I totally forgot), and they refused to do it. They instead sent me a free copy of PGR4. *sigh*
Seriously, I think I'm just going to repair it myself when the damn thing breaks *again*. They had 4 chances from me to get it right, and they still send me old and used POS hardware revisions back from 2006 (my last console sent in Feb of 2009 came back as a Zephyr). There is no point in paying $150+ for a repair to receive yet another POS that will break in 8 months.
My nephew (21 years old) had his XBOX 360 go bad. It was replaced - and it too went bad. He was told that he has to pay to get it fixed - it's out of warranty. He has no money - he is an unemployed college student. He plans to buy a PS3 (with his gift money). My other nephew also has an XBOX that is defective; he now owns a PS3. The XBOX has some decent games, but the quality is unacceptable.
hey mikee,
I hate to breake it too you but whenever you send in your 360 for a RRoD the 3 years starts all over again. Just a little FYI for ya.
If you are handy with a razer blade and want to stick it to the man, you could buy a new xbox, and swap the innards of the new one with the broken one (using the razer blade to keep all warranty stickers intacts as well as transfer over the relevant serial stickers) and then return it to the store saying it was DOA. You can get a refund, or a replacement, either is a win.
Not that I have done or condone such a thing ;-)
@Gurg: I hate to break it to ya, but I still have to pay $150+ for my next repair, do I not? Thus, my original point is still valid: not all 360's are covered under warranty anymore and therefore the warranty excuse is a very weak one at best. If I'm going to spend $150+ for a repair in which I'm just going to receive another POS console back out, why not spend a little extra for a more reliable console with HDMI? I personally know several people who have done just that, and I don't think they should be counted twice for marketshare statistics.
I see no reason why I (or anybody else) should be responsible for repair fees for item that is defective by design and needs to be recalled, especially when I sent the item in for repairs more than twice at no fault of my own.
@gurg
I hate to break it to you gurg but the warranty doesn't work like that. never was, never will.
He wisely said PS3 and not PS2.
Either way, the 360 came out with no competition a full fiscal year ahead of the PS3. It amazes me that you can even claim them to be of the same 'generation', let alone compare sales figures.
It's not hard to outsell the rival when you haven't got one.
Fact is, the 360 is not dominating in sales.
I don't know why gamers care that much, except that no one wants to buy a system as unpopular as the old Xbox or dreamcast. Look kids: the PS3 is about 1/4th of the world market, and the 360 is about 1/3rd. Neither get the stupid props for being dominating. Both have more than enough saturation to ensure that they will gets tons and tons of awesome games. Everyone freaking wins. Life is good.
I personally prefer the PS3 because I like the franchises that are exclusive. I know people who take tons of pleasure in Halo, and that 360 has been a great deal for them. Multis are not bad at all on either system (though I think the PS3 exclusives have far better graphics). Life's good for everyone.
Last roung, the XBOX was absolutely a terrible failure, and Microsoft abandoned their customers in a sense, very early on. That's what the secret fear is that has led to so many fanboys trying to convince everyone to join their ship. MS knows this, and shouldn't take too much pride in this battle they invented. Sony's never failed to support their players for a while, and they are stubborn about that kind of thing, which is a good thing because I don't think they'll ever again reach PS2 levels of domination themselves.
Greenberg STFU. You too Sony exec.
...and you too abkyuubi47!
ahha!! you too
Then why did you lower the price to counter PS3's move?
... to continue to sell more... Durrr...
Holy shit Simon. That was the stupidest question I've heard on Engadget.
Because they can!
I don't see what's wrong here, this guy stated the obvious... Even if I sold my Xbox 360.
We can freely say neither will outsell the Wii. It's... evident.
Of course they'll sell more... people will need to keep buying them as console after console red rings.
XBOX 360 units sold to the public, or XBOX 360 units shipped from their repair depot?
Sorry, hafta go, can't finish post....my XBOX has just caught fire :(
Ps3 $300
Xbox $200
Hmmh wonder what will sell more in a depression stricken planet.
Dee Dee deee!!!!!
PS3 - $300 - includes wireless internet, blue ray, free online play = $300
Xbox - $200 - $100 for wireless, $150 for standalone player(or just play all those Hd Dvd's they keep releasing), $50 a year online play = $500 plus once a year you need a replacement (see 40% failure rate).
Hmm which one is better?
@Derrik:
Doesn't matter which one is "better". PS3 has technically been "better" than 360 for the past 3 years, yet more people have chosen to buy the 360. The sales numbers prove it. How many millions more systems has 360 sold than PS3? This fact, combined the vastly larger game library, makes 360 "better"
Both 360 and PS3 are technically "better" than the Wii, yet which system has sold the most?
And I'll bite the bait, the vast majority of people don't care about blu-ray. People have proven that their willing to pay 50 a year for online play because they get a better experience with it. And you need to buy a new one every year? Ever hear about the 3 year warranty?
because everyone uses official products bought at store price
You forgot the wireless adapter, hard drive and Xbox Live service... OOOPS you spent too much!
do any of you realize he was talking about an economic business perceptive whereas you guys are talking from an educated customer perspective. well, that educated is pretty subjective, because you weren't educated enough to differ a business statement from a flame bit.
are you insane???
Xbox is the way of future!!!
are you all insane???
Xbox is the way of future!!!
The sony fanboys still havent learned from their massive market loss. People just want to buy a console. They dont want or need a bluray player. If they did they tend to want a standalone, and will buy it on their terms. Sony's plan to bundle the bluray has only raised the cost of the console and chased off buyers. Now its just too late to do anything about it. Sony has cemented itself as an anti-consumer company with its tactics. I'll take MS over them any day of the week.
>PS3 - $300 - includes wireless internet, blue ray, free online play = $300
You can add in a breadmachine and a foot massager into there if you like. It still doesnt help sales to bundle things people didnt ask for and then claim it gives you market superiority.
He needs to stop drinking that YAK! I mean look at his eyes he's a microsoft drinker!
"CE-Oh no he didn't!"?
Oh please. When you guys" forgot" to pull this title out with that Apple exec., you might as well retire this whole series.
Agreed, although no matter how you look at it, it's still Engadget.
Which means automatic Apple bias. Yes, we're aware of that.
Apple's post about Lying Phil saying "It's still Windows" should have had the tagline: "CE-Oh yes, he's a douche!"
Seriously, fuck you Engadget bias, fuck you!
$h!t consoles will always sell more. First the PS1, then the PS2 and now the Xbox 360.
Actually the weaker consoles of their gen, the order is PS1, PS2, then Wii.
Eh, the Xbox 360 Elite is $300 and worth every penny. I've had my Xbox 360 since it came out and I had no issues what so ever with it and I played 10 hours a day for quite a few months. I just recently purchased the Xbox 360 Elite one month before the mention of the $100 price drop -.- I've had no problems with either.
Of course the Wii will outsell everything, it's cheap and family friendly. Plus many people need the Wii Fit ;)
10 hours a day for a couple months... holy shit.
10 hrs a day for a couple months = you probably need the wii fit plus
10 hours a day for 2 months! WOW... that's like that south park episode: "Make love not warcraft"
Lol, nah. I'm actually pretty fit. I go to the Gym every other day for a few hours and such. The 10 hours a day thing was a few years ago, I play Xbox Live mildly now.
Dude, 10 hours a day of ANYTHING is too much. Get a job, girlfriend, social life, go to school, read a book, do SOMETHING other than game all day...
Gamertag then?
this guy had one too many hamburgers
fuuuuck his forehead is big
that's because his brain is so big. just like me... or is it something else? I wonder...
/plugs up dreamcast
hmm funny every report im Reading the sony is starting to outsell 360 since the price drop and besides Halo what other xbox exclusives are there coming out umm forenza..... oh yeah thats about it. I have both systems there both great but I think the PS3 is set for the long haul.
Ummm Gears of War? Ever hear of that awesome game?
And we all know Modern Warfare is mostly played on 360 with the live experience. Ever hear of Modern Warfare 2?
I myself just bought a 360 just for MW2. Sure online play and stuff is free on a PS3, but the majority of my friends use Live and I personally feel the controller sucks balls on PS. PS3 is not yet set for the long haul.
And what good PS3 exclusives are there? Unchartered 2 (seewatididthar?)? Shut the fuck up. Both consoles are great at what they're meant for. I'll personally never buy a PS3 cause I don't care for the exclusives on it, and the 360 controller is vastly superior.
"Ummm Gears of War? Ever hear of that awesome game?"
Yes, I had it, and imho, it sucks. Generic FPS games have no business in my shelves.
No bias though, I don't like the PS3/Wii much either.
@ Jordan: I love all consoles and PCs (they all have their pros and cons).... But because you think the ps3 controller sucks (which is YOUR opinion btw) that means the PS3 isn't set for the long haul?... So if someone else comes on here and says the 360 controller sucks, does that mean 360 isn't set for the long haul either?..... Stop being a fanboy and just enjoy your games :P
And your point about modern warfare means nothing, yes there may be more people who play modern warfare on the 360 (also most people actually play on PC, check the numbers out for yourself) but what does that matter? As long as players have enough people to play a full match with, who cares? It's when you constantly find empty/very small matches that it starts to matter.
"As long as players have enough people to play a full match with, who cares"
We may not care, but, let's say there are 1,000 people who play on 360 and 32 who play on PS3 (yes I know these numbers are grossly off). The 32 people who play may be happy, but Sony isn't. Infinity Ward would then consider PS3 not as worthwhile to develop for.
Now I'm not saying that's what's going to happen, but what I am saying is corporate companies look at numbers. It doesn't matter if some people use it or not, the statistics are what matters.
And no, just because I don't like the PS3 controller does not mean that's why the PS3 has a long way to go. The PS3 has a long way to go because we are now 3 years into the consoles life and it still isn't selling the way they would like it to. The 360 and Wii both just got price cuts as well, this will no doubt steer people away from the PS3. Not to mention the vast game library that the 360 has compared to the PS3. Now maybe some people like the games the PS3 has, that's fine for them, but the majority like what the 360 has. Sales numbers have proven it. The price of stand alone blu ray players is also dropping (and from what I hear is set to drop more soon as well), taking away from the PS3 marketshare that would buy it for a blu ray player.
And again, there's the 3 year into the console life thing again. The market could possibly start to become saturated. Had the PS3 released at this price point or maybe even slightly higher, things could be different. But there aren't as many people who are going to buy consoles now as there were a few years ago. I'm not expecting sales to stop, but I am expecting them to slow down, and I do believe we will finish this generation with Wii selling most units, followed by 360, with PS3 bringing up the rear.
He has learned well from Balmer.
Someone is brain-washed. For the very simple fact that Blu-Ray is the standard over HD DVD; educated people will buy the PS3 because they know it is way more than just game console. The Xbox360 is outdated; I would be looking for another job.
Something tells me you're not one of the educated if you're talking about HD DVD...
blu-ray a standard, now that's funny
Not that I particularly care for either, but in terms of the long haul, I gotta give this to Xbox simply because that Natal thing is pretty impressive.. That Sony thing with the red sphers... I mean seriously, they're joking right?? The company shuns motion tech, then scrambles to throw it into their garbage controllers at the last minute at the expense of the controller rumble dealys Now they're essentially bringing the exact same thing the Wii already offers at a price premium.... Well, at least it has a Blu-ray player...
Oh my...poor CEO guy...he is so scared
he should have nightmares with the PS3 slim in the top 10 in amazon for 2 months
Why should he be scared? Microsoft has XBOX Live. End of story.
now why did you put this on CE-oh no
but not that on Phil Schiller
The date from PS3 Fan Boys is blatantly evident. But of course, Engadget thrives on flame wars ;)
Arrgh! I meant "hate"....
Fairly educated actually:
HD DVD (short for High-Definition/Density DVD) is a discontinued high-density optical disc format for storing data and high-definition video.[1] Supported principally by Toshiba, HD DVD was envisaged to be the successor to the standard DVD format. However, in February 2008, after a protracted high definition optical disc format war with rival Blu-ray, Toshiba abandoned the format, announcing it would no longer develop or manufacture HD DVD players or drives.[1] The HD DVD Promotion Group was dissolved on March 28, 2008.[2]
Since all variants except 3× DVD and HD REC employed a blue laser with a shorter wavelength, HD DVD could store about 3¼ times as much data per layer as its predecessor (maximum capacity: 15 GB per layer instead of 4.7 GB per layer).
Here's a tip, if you're going to try and copy information off wikipedia and try to claim it as your own knowledge, remove the footnote numbers. It might help you.
I didn't claim anything as my own Jordan except the knowledge that makes me an educated customer. Just thought you might want to be in the know as to why PS3 is going to rock Xbox360's world.
Yes but what I'm saying is why are you even talking about HD DVD? It's been dead for how long now? PS3 has had blu ray in it since the beginning. That was 3 years ago. And I'm sorry to inform you, but PS3 having blu ray ain't exactly rockin 360s world.
Well color this guy green and call him the Great Gazoo. Cause that's who he'll have to be to make this prediction come true.
Actually, if Greenberg were green he would look pretty much like the Great Gazoo...
You know, every time some arrogant MS Exec makes some egotistical statement about the Xbox 360, I get irked. MS shipped out a console that had technical issues from its debut; I wouldn't be crazy to say, that at least half the 360 consumer base has had a RROD system. And they still have yet to fix the issue, so what the heck are they so proud of?! The 360 is such a disgrace when you consider the reliability of past consoles, heck, my launch Gamecube and PS2 Slim still work perfectly, even my N64 still works. MS should FIX the RROD issue before they mouth off about how many of they're consoles will sell or have sold, for all they know half those prospective numbers could be gamers buying a new console after the last went RROD. What's even worst than Microsoft's ignorance, is the fact that most gamers have come to see RROD as the norm, and if you talk about it, MS fanboys flame you. I swear, the day my 360 goes RROD on me and won't come back to life, I'm gonna chuck it in the garbage and forget MS till next-gen. My PS3 and Wii will just have to entertain me till then.
Sony execs make just as many arrogant comments, so go troll elsewhere you illiterate moron.
@avengeryarr: did you even read his post? his point is Microsoft isn't in a position to make such comments because of its disgracefully high failure rate, and fanboy dipshits such as yourself not only accept it but defend it, way to prove his point moron.
