Dell's $2,000 Adamo XPS launching October 22 with heat-sensing open latch
Dell has been teasing its ultrathin Adamo XPS for weeks now, but all that goofing off will come to a solemn end next Thursday. On the same day that we sit down with Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer (and a little OS by the name of Windows 7 hits store shelves), Dell will also fully reveal the planet's slimmest laptop. The 0.39-inch Adamo XPS will cost $2,000, and while the nitty-gritty details are still under wraps, a new Business Week article notes that it'll boast a "heat-sensing strip on the lip that, when swiped with a finger, glows white and automatically opens the aluminum lid." The glamorous machine is part of a larger effort within the Round Rock powerhouse to revitalize itself and get people talking once again, and while this particular slab will obviously not be a high volume product, it could very well get a few more eyes pointed in its direction. Call us crazy, but we're guessing next week is going to be a wee bit zany.

Good Mossberg good :)
Dell Adamo Digital USB w/ headphone jack thermometer edition.
Just $9,001 dollars, with 0.1% rebate if bundled with thermo-porn.
A kick in the balls is funnier than what you just wrote.
@samboini
I actually laughed at that then the original comment made. ^_^
Is dat some usb i see thar?
Now if it only had a nipple
that's one expensive Del letter opener with a USB port, and looks like it can cut through cake too better than the airbook...
not bad...... very cool
So, when is very thin too thin? I think we are getting to the ridiculous end of thinness! And I'm glad that I'm not one of those people with more money than sense who will pay a premium for a sexy but underpowered and (sure to under perform) laptop from Dell or anyone else!
True, I can not carry my desk-bound M1730 around, but that is what my $350 net-book is for. Whatever requires more than what my 3g enabled LG-X110 can handle can wait till I get to my desk and such things are very hard to come by, trust me.
Just because "you" are not the market does not mean the market does not exist outside your bubble. For example, I am a Marine. I am soon going to be getting on a warship and sailing across the globe in search of things to blow up. Good times, and when I get there, I will likely have a decent bit of space to share with 30 other smelly, sweaty dudes. However, my journey over there, my rack (which is the only personal space I get, is a bunk bed that is 6 feet long (I am 6'2" tall), 3' wide and 20 inches tall. So yeah, for me, space is a premium. A netbook is tiny as hell, yes, but it doesn't exactly perform well.
I'm waiting to see what's in this puppy before I even think about getting excited, but the point is that it has piqued my interest, as it is a)sexy b) think enough to actually fit in my incredibly tiny living space yet c) could be powerful enough to not make me regret my purchase when I finally get in-country and have more space. I don't have the luxury of being able to have both a powerful desktop AND a tiny netbook...
What I'm saying is that I get that it's not your cup o' tea. At the same time, perhaps you should realize that just because it doesn't make sense to you doesn't mean the person buying it has no sense. It just means that if YOU bought it, knowing your own situation, YOU would have no sense. Besides, aesthetics matter on electronics for everybody, not just for those with lots of money. Look at Apple- without the "sex appeal" of their gadgetry (and their extremely healthy advertising budget), they would just be another manufacturer with overpriced electronics.
I bet you drive an bare bones Kia without air conditioning too. Don't badmouth a product just because you're outside of their market.
Well, every company needs a halo product, and this is good in that sence...However, pricing it above the MBA seems silly to me, unless the specs are substantially better. In Dell's defence, the last gen one included an SSD that sort of (not completely) justified the higher price tag, i can only imagine they wont downgrade to an HDD this time 'round.
Come on Dell, how about a new Studio XPS line for October 22nd?
I wonder (i) what does the "we're guessing next week is going to be a wee bit zany" remark mean, and (ii) would engadget make a remark like this was an Apple product?
weird how a year ago steve ballmer made fun of the macbook air and how it has no optical drive,is slow and to expensive hmmm....
No what's weird is how you can't differentiate between an executive of a software corporation that makes operating systems and a completely separate hardware manufacturer who happens to use that OS. One of dozens of such companies that everyday produce various product that use Microsoft OS's without involving Microsoft in their decision making.
Steve Ballmer works for Microsoft, not Dell. Microsoft doesn't have any say whatsoever in the manufacturing of any computer that happens to use Windows. So...um...your point was what, again? Microsoft != computer manufacturers who use Microsoft, which is exactly why the whole Windows/Apple comparisons are always so dumb.
Congratulations, you just made the internet dumber.
@ OG_Phenix
So Ballmer should also be making fun of this laptop because it has no optical drive, is slow and too expensive. And because he was not involved in the decision making process.
@WinMoWinMo_is_trash
Yes, because undercutting the people who buy your product is good business sense. I mean, I realize that you're trying to make a point about hypocrisy here...but I also realize that your screen name might indicate your inability to deal with information contrary to your tiny worldview.
I get the point you're trying to make, I really do. Oh man, Steve Ballmer made fun of his competitors, but he won't do the same for the people that keep him employed! You totally got him!
It's sophomoric. You're actually expecting somebody to say something that would hurt his company, on purpose, in order to appease people like yourself. Come on, really?
I mean, was saying it in the first place out of place? Maybe. I don't think these companies have to be antagonistic. Yet to hop on the internet and be all like "oh man, we got him here!" is juvenile and implies ignorance of basic principles of business...hell, it implies ignorance of basic concepts of humanity--- don't bite the hand that feeds you. Dell puts money in Microsofts' coffers. They aren't going to make fun of their partners. To expect them to do so?
Well, let's just say I expect it about the same time as I expect somebody at Apple to admit that their hardware really isn't any better than their competitors and they charge more simply because they know their customers are willing to pay a premium to own it, rather than simply hacking OS X onto a cheaper and ultimately better performing PC.
I.E, never.
Ultra-thin AND built-in vampire/undead protection? I'm in.
specs please
hahaha. I think i cut myself from looking at it.
naw, they only like laptops that can cut themselves, not their owner.
""heat-sensing strip on the lip that, when swiped with a finger, glows white and automatically opens the aluminum lid." "
That's just dumb.
i wanna know the specs. SPECS!!!!
looks like the quest for thin has taken its place over the quest for good cooling, ergonomic design, and power. tell me when they begin those quests.
Good cooling? 1) This thing has a fan, unlike the MBA. 2) The Adamo XPS has a large built in gap underneath giving it airflow that NO OTHER laptop comes with naturally.
those vents are ugly
Actually, those may prove to not be vents at all. Look at other pics and you'll see that the fan is actually on the keyboard side that folds out of the display (the side of which can be seen in this picture).
GTFO
Cool!
that view looks like a needle to me...
Dell, I'm happy for you and all, and imma let you finish... but Apple had one of the best notebooks of ALL TIME!
