Those already upgraded to Windows 7 ahead of Thursday's launch events (no, we're not coming to your party) should find a Netflix button parked under the Movies section in Media Center starting today. Clicking it revealed a slightly smoother install process than the initial
Netflix upgrade for Vista users last spring, then it's off to the refreshed interface we
first spotted at CEDIA -- extender support or HD streaming is still out. Also updated is the out-of-beta internet TV sliding under the TV tab (new from beta 2: Adobe Flash video support and region locking) with a wide assortment of streaming video available, though the picture quality
still leaves something to be desired.
[Thanks, Daren & Craig]
Update: Not seeing it yet? Go to the Tasks -->Settings-->General-->Automatic Download Options and manually start an update there, the new tiles should arrive shortly.
finally!!!
I installed the update (KB974431) and I'm not seeing it...
Can you use your xbox 360 with this as an extender, to get around having to have a gold membership to get the built-in netflix support?
never mind I over read that part it doesn't support it, my bad.
I really like this news, as a subscriber to Netflix and a lover of W7, but I'm with a majority of you guys when I must voice that HD support just needs to be made available to us! :)
instantly few minutes
No extender support so who cares..
probably people who have media center pc's such as myself.
Why wont you let me stream in HD Microsoft? My OS costs just as much as my 360, so just give it to me already :-(
It's not Microsoft dork. There are technologies that Netflix could use that can provide HD quality (Silverlight). I am sure it isn't on their top list because of the bandwidth required to support something like that (there is a larger Windows user base than XBOX's).
Since I got the Roku box I realized that the Silverlight has been holding them back. The HD streaming on the Roku box is much better in quality and speed of buffering than the Silverlight plugin for Mac or PC
Any comparison to the 360 in streaming or quality? I have watched a few movies on my 360 and have been quite happy with the quality and buffer times. I have Uverse 18/2 and buffering takes just a few seconds on the 360. I have noticed that 5.1 support is lacking though, but I can't complain too much as I already had the 360 before Netflix support was added so its pretty much just icing at this point.
I don't think it has anything to do with Silverlight holding them back for HD content. Silverlight can stream impressive HD. I think it has more to do with the likelihood of you being able to capture and record an HD stream on a PC vs. a Roku or Xbox360. It is all about content protection, and they seem to care less about SD content. For this reason I don't think you are going to see HD streaming on any non-appliance devices.
@RandomGuy
I'm pretty sure Silverlight has a DRM path that uses HDCP with Windows Vista/7. I doubt copying is really the biggest problem they have. I think it's more Microsoft wanting to push people to get a 360 with an Xbox Live Gold Account than anything else.
Boxee did it.
yep.. finally !!
does it have a search feature unlike the xbox implementation?
Yes, you can search.
Xbox searches now. (But only the top 100 in each category)
Where do I get this? How do I install it?
I just updated both my windows 7 ultimate machines and neither of them has this option! WTH?
Beta/RC or full blown retail version?
I'm a technet subscriber so I have the full retail version.
Hmm, no clue then. Maybe it's an incremental roll out?
See majortom1981 Post just a few post down.
"For those of you who dont see it you have to have media center (not windows update) download the data. Just go into tasks, settings ,general, automatic download options, and click download now.
When the download finishes netflix will appear under movies
PS engadget you guys should put that in the article."
Thanks, i just saw that and am trying it now
@PGP
Thanks, that worked!
There were there when I came home on my 7 RC machine.. so works for both I guess.
Still not working for me. 7 RTM legally activated copy from my college.
Hmmm thats interesting...I have neither Netflix nor Internet TV in my Media Center.
yeah, i don't see it in my media center either.....
Yeah, this update was out a bit ago...i noticed it the other day when i did a new clean insall of 7 and Vista Ultimate.
For those of you who dont see it you have to have media center (not windows update) download the data. Just go into tasks, settings ,general, automatic download options, and click download now.
When the download finishes netflix will appear under movies
PS engadget you guys should put that in the article.
i did the update about 10 mins ago and it's still not there....
You have to have "Retrieve CD Album art, media information for DVDs and movies, and Internet Service from the Internet" Enabled before you click Download now
oo thanks!
Worked, thanks a ton!
And EVERYONE should download MEDIABROWSER and make it rain. A little FYI though (for 7 users trying to build their media empire), there are tutorials online claiming to get around the windows media foundation codecs...they are not reliable and switching out the win codecs for the true ones is a nightmare. (Resulting vids are either choppy, no audio, or they break media center).
Huh, what is your basis for this claim? I have adjusted codecs in W7 to allow for playback of ts VC-1 with use of DXVA without a problem (which windows media foundation codecs does not support). Where is the nightmare you discuss as I have yet to see???
Well, first off the foundation codecs didnt provide an "as-clear picture" as possible. (pushing to a backlit LED 46" vs. a 50" plasma for testing). I ran the reg hacks, and the various codec swappers, they all followed well, but down the the line I was running into issues with uncompressed blu-ray rips. (Various files of .m2ts). They would play video, but no audio. They would play audio, but no video. They would play video, but with directors commentary. And this is from a complete clean install (not an upgrade). Eventually through media browser vids started chopping, blocking, and stuttering to a point where I went back to Vista Ultimate. To be honest with 2tb, onboad hdmi, and 4gbs of ram it appears to be more than enough, i just got a little giddy with 7.
Tested with Haali, new divx, Shark pack, klite pack, Core AVC codec, and misc. others...
I agree, Media Browser rocks! I use it as part of my media center (it replaces the "Movie Library" tab). For those complaining about it not being part of the media center extender. Just install the app on your 360. You're using the same account and you can have either 5 or 6 devices tethered to one account.
Did they fix the issue with tearing in Silverlight? I've had the Netflix Media Center app since they released it earlier this year, but hardly use it because of the widely loathed tearing of frames.
Would like to edit, I'm running Vista Media Center and have the tearing issue with Netflix. I have a lot of customizations that are holding me back from making the jump to Windows 7 for my media center, but if they fixed the tearing issue then I'll be upgrading sooner than I thought.
Awesome! When I switch from RC to retail this weekend I'll have something to look forward to.
I just tried, it works for the RC.
@seriousam7 Which version of RC are you using? x64 or x86 ?
works for me and i got x64 RC
Will the Release Candidate installations get this update too?
I can confirm that this works with the RC, too. I have a Media Center box with Windows 7 RC installed and this showed up for me today. Super, super exciting since I won't be able to pick up the retail Win7 for another couple months.
You should of thrown a house party :D
Will this be available for Release Candidate installations?
720p support?
oops, didn't read the posting first.
Where were those pictures taken?
Does it work with the remote? I cant believe the Vista one didnt.
yes, but then again, so did the vista one.
I'm using an MS remote and a Harmony remote and both work.
And for those of you trying to figure out where it is or how to get it in your Windows 7 Media Center that was not upgraded from Vista (such as those that got an advanced copy from Microsoft, thanks MSFT).
Here you go:
Open Windows Media Center
Go to TV
Internet TV (If missing Go to TV > Guide. Click on the first link in the Guide, probably CBS.)
Confirm to Install internet TV (Accept and Confirm)
Once you have Internet TV installed you can scroll down to Channels and Select Netflix
You will then be prompted to install (Accept and Confirm)
Took alot of figuring out since I didn't have Vista.
While new features are always welcome the lack of extender support is a downer. I know why they do it, because of people like me who only got Xbox Live Gold membership because of Netflix. I play no games on my xboxen and the family only uses them for media stuff. Now, the xbox has additional value, it plays games and DVDs so maybe not that bad of a deal. But for the people who bought the dedicated extenders I think this really sucks. That's all they do, extend media center, but not all of it. I have PlayOn set up so the family can use Hulu and I know PlayOn does Netflix as well but it's not 100% reliable or as convenient. The extender diss is getting annoying.
now you know why most of the companies making extenders decided to ditch them.
they were a bastard child that was treated worse than the tv pack was.
it worked on my RC box, but not on my RTM box.... hmmm...
Internet tv looks horrible : ( ... Really blocky and not even close to HD
Er, because it's NOT HD? Just a hunch...
Am I to assume then that this is an America-centric post about both Windows 7 and Netflix, or are we incinuating broader content distribution here?
Does not work for me, did everyting in the post, but it wont show up.
Maybe its because i`m in europe?
Windows 7 Proffesional Full Retail (MSDNAA) here, so thats not the problem.
Anyone have a clue?
dang MS are smart ones i thought this would work with the media extener for 360 no luck guess there sticking to that extra Gold exclusive deal Darn u MS!
Well... It's certainly more/better integrated than the other one. But picture quality is shit, and the speed is shit as well.
Wmurch3 - Far more people have xbox's than HTPC's attached to tv's. I'm waiting for the Xbox update, but looks like Microsoft missed the boat again.
looks like shit..why can't we have hd again?
"extender support ... is still out"
ARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHH!
Why did NetFlix have to switch to silverlight and kill the vmcNetFlix plug-in? I was perfectly happy watching my NetFlix vids off my xbox 360 via vmcNetFlix's pretty interface and ability to download videos for buffer-less watching later. When you took that happiness away from me (silverlight installed without my permission, the new once-you-go-silverlight-you-don't-go-back NetFlix player) you dropped several points in my eyes.
It seems to be missing the image tearing issues it had in Vista as well so that's a nice change. I saw some bad image stutter in Out Cold, but that may have been the encoding of that film cause Fifth Element (what else would you test with) looked great.
I am running the RC (7100) and so far no luck with the Netflix or the new Internet TV icon. I have tried the 'download now' within MC. Still nothing. The interesting thing is that the Internet TV 2 beta is gone and none of the on demand buttons on the guide work now. I am going to leave my PC on to see if something happens.
I am running x64 version of the RC (7100), so maybe that has something to do with why I don't have it yet.
So I've got it installed/downloaded, but every time I try to login with my Netflix account it tells me it isn't a valid account, I know it is, I just logged in to the Netflix website with the same info? Anyone had this problem?
There's something wrong with my Internet TV.
It shows up as "Guide" and when I go under the guide and attempt to click on any of the Internet TV shows, nothing happens. None of the shows launch. Plus, I don't see the Netflix option under the Movies section.
I manually downloaded the Media Center files and made sure both check boxes were checked.
?????????????
Same here.
This gave me a TROJAN on Windows 7. SuperAntiSpyware I think. I haven't used the PC in a week; it was fine a week ago; the only thing I could have done to trigger this was update the guide listings and install Netflix!
how long until Microsoft buys Netflix and makes a mess of the company?
I have 4 Win 7 media center PCs, and Netflix support showed up yesterday on 3 of them. What's up witth number 4? I tried the suggestion in the articlee (Tasks > Settings > Automatic Download Options), but no dice. The only updates I've avoided on WU are th optional language packs. Any other ideas to force a download of the Netflix app?
found the solution.
I opened a command prompt and typed the following to get it to work:
cd /d %WINDIR%\ehome
[HIT THE ENTER KEY]
start /wait mcupdate -uf
