Dell Adamo XPS opens up for Windows 7 festivities, but still not for sale
So much for Business Week's "confirmed" October 22nd launch date from over the weekend, eh? We just spoke with Dell's PR who told us that the company has yet to confirm a launch date for its slender Adamo XPS, and still won't, except to say that it's not reaching the unwashed masses at any point today. That doesn't mean today was all bad for the vigilant in waiting, as we finally got our first public showing of the front of the laptop, proving once and for all that the most recent press photo isn't crooked. So there you have it, a chiclet keyboard and touchpad that likes to curl up close with the screen -- mystery's over, folks, now we play the waiting game.
Update: Laptop Mag notes a removable battery and what's likely to be an Intel ULV processor -- it's definitely not Atom.

what the hell happened. the first adamo design was so cool
I love how nobody commenting on the ugliness of the colors in this pic recall ANYTHING about the most recent press shots. This thing is most definitely silver aluminum and black. What I'm really curious about are the specs and operating temperature (with that much of a gap it must have wicked air flow).
Wow the iTards are really out in force today. Jobs must have SMSed every iPhone user in America to go on the offensive. Sadly it only reached half of them.
First off the lighting in the damn picture is off. Anyone with a brain could see that. Oh wait. Mac users. Never mind. Secondly if it had a fruit on it you iTards would be drooling all over it. Its a beautiful design when you consider how they go about making the system thin. Sadly its overpriced for its featureset....OMG! Dell copied Apple again! Seriously though if this was about half the price its currently at, it would be tempting.
Oh no..this design nooo please...Invert it
What in God's name is that? When I saw the profile pics of its side I figured they were putting it upside down - making soem sort of fashion statement.
Well done dell, you've created the Pontiac Aztec of the laptop world
I'm only voting you up cause up the Aztec comment..
I actually want this laptop.
I actually really like this.
I like my keyboard tilted like that too. Would be great on a desktop.. don't know about a lap..
Stupid design, impractical for actually using on your lap, or anywhere else without a reasonable amount of desk space, and it costs $2000.
Dell needs to stop trying to be Apple, and go back to being Dell.
I like it. Flame on, muffuggas.
Looks interesting. Puzzling, but interesting.
I'll reserve judgment to when I use it, thank you.
It's funny how on the PCWORLD site there's a MacBook Air Ad in the sidebar
F*ck Dell. They shipped all their jobs overseas.
That would literally be impossible to use on a plane. I travel for work and that simply won't be usable. What a terribly impractical design.
That reminds me of the strange folding Asus laptop, whatever happened to that?
hmm that asus thing with the light effects..yeah what happened to that?? next to this abomination that was a miss universe...
That's a lot of cash for a laptop that hit every branch on the way down when it fell out of the ugly tree.
wow that's ugly.
EWWWW
I love how weve seen one photo and its already the ugly duckling.
ugh, destroys the idea of the word laptop since that's not going to be comfortable to use on your lap anymore. I prefer getting the first Adamo then specially that they've increased the power and stayed on the same price, though lower price would be greatly appreciated.
so thats going to be a real awkward usage in your lap
You're not really supposed to use a laptop on your lap anyways. Not unless you want it to overheat.
Wich probably is exactly why dell went for this "ugly" design.
Have you ever tried using a modern, high powered "laptop" in your lap?
-Apples burn you, because they dont have vents, vut simply use the surface to dissipate heat (on your ap)
-other "laptops" overheat, since you are blocking their vents on the lower side.
This design solves both those issues, and you also get a cool palmrest and keyboard.
How good it works, and if the angle of the keyboard is usable remains to be seen, but this strange design is definietely more than just "LOL OMFG ugly, dell is loosing again, tey copieeid apple again but did it wrong LOL"
What is ugly, however is the fact they they put a 16:9 monitor in a frame for a 16:10, so that they esentially have a bezel inside a bezel.
It was ugly with the original eee, but asus ad least had a point there (price) but i suppose this one isnt going to come cheap.
also what use is a 16:9 screen anyways?
hmm so uncool !! where does dell find these designers..are they interns who try to proof something??? (no offense I'm currently also an intern)
that would be fairly uncomfortable to have in your lap I think I'll pass, give us a real hinge please dell
Someone was sniffing the glue that this thing was put together with.
I think it's a pretty ingenious design when you think about it. What's the number one thing you always run into with small laptops that have big power, heat, and the vents are always on the side or on the bottom. So because it's so thin you can't have it on the side and when you put them on the bottom it gets starved for air and becomes heat soaked so you have to buy a laptop cooler which totally defeats the purpose of an ultra portable. So why not suspend all the heat soaked parts where they can breath freely and get great airflow? I wouldn't be surprised if we find some relatively heavy iron under the hood of this thing, but I'm not holding my breath.
That computer is ugly in the way that Bang and Olufsen products are ugly... this wasn't made for the masses. Dell should be rewarded for that.
dude, b&o stuff ain't ugly. plus the quality you get will stay with u until you die. our tv is 20 year old and still rocks ...
looks like a computer with an extended battery that got knocked over
Jesus, that's ugly and idiotic.
Hard to imagine how this thing ever made it out of the sketchbook, let alone produced for actual sale.
DELL ON DRUGS!
it looks ugly, which would make me rage if i were using it, which would make me slam on the keyboard, which would make said keyboard break and the screen would fall onto the floor to break and then get stepped on.
That my friends, is going out in style. blue screen of death is so 2001
ZOMG Something different!!! Kill it with fire!
If this were something apple made and the aesthetics were slightly different (straight sides, no curves... etc) people would be raving about how revolutionary it was and how they solved the cooling problem with laptops.
Newsflash, laptops aren't COMFORTABLE to use on your laps right now unless you want to cook the family jewels (or the female equivalent). I seriously doubt that the bottom of the screen is going to dig into your legs considering the thing is going to weight like 2lbs.
Its pretty obvious that the angle of the screen is still adjustable. You have to be pretty dense if you don't think they designed in enough resistance to hold itself open at any angle, especially if it only weighs 2lbs. If you are typing with it sitting on your legs you will lean the screen back further and the keyboard won't be at such an angle. If you don't think you'll be able to use it on a plane, you should realize this laptop probably isn't designed for coach, where it is pretty hard to use any laptop.
Its an interesting NEW design. I emphasize new because it is the first new form factor for notebooks in probably a decade at least that will make it to production.
Holy crap, I think we get it. People think its ugly. We don't need to read "OMG its soooo ugly" over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. STFU TIA.
Wow, Dell sure pulled a fast one on us when all they showed at first was the thin profile of the body, not that queer-o screen/stand.
The falling-off-the-tablest laptop ever!
WOW.
And they gave this the Adamo name? I would've thought they would at least keep the design aspects avant garde.
I would rather buy the regular Adamo.
This just OOOOOOOOZES ugly.
Oh, and BTW, I hate macs. So don't go pulling the whole "if it was a mac" thing on me. I love my dell as it is, and I LOVE the Dell Adamo, but this shouldn't even be made into production.
What's next? "It's butt-ugly but as thin as paper!!! BUY BUY BUY!!! $3000."
It shouldn't be a thickness race, but a power race.
Are you supposed to be the new DanielT ?
beside all the "thought" they spend and I don't want to know how much cash flew into this project neighter, i just wonder how long the battery will actually last. ooh just another question popped up, how are we going to keep this thing on our laps??
can this work on your lap???
well this is the first laptop ive seen that looks like it will be tremendously uncomfortable to use in your lap.
So how come this get's CULV while the Vaio X is relegated to Atom?
Yeah because all the techno geeks LOVE their prada shoes.
GTFO.
And it's probably knockoff/stolen anyway.
Well, I bet it won't look so bad after a couple of beers.
So maybe the unconventional design disappoints some people, but it doesn't change its razor thinness or materials.
wow- a toplap--booknote?
it's cool, but unless it's not priced with 600$ i won't buy it...
The commenting on this site is getting downright ridiculous.
good grief
Prefer the old Adamo. Just isn't sleek enough in reality to compare. Maybe its just the lighting though. Concept is interesting though, seems to me that Dell is simply doing some manner of experiment in design...
