Dell Inspiron 13z goes on sale in Australia
We knew Dell was planning on a whole range of Inspiron Z-series machines way back in August when we previewed the line, and it looks like the 13-inch model is finally ready to join the already-launched 11, 14 and 15 -- in Australia. Yep, the Z-series has gone live Down Under, and the Inspiron 13z is part of the lineup, starting at AU$1,199 (US$1,106). That'll buy you a 1.3GHz SU7300 Core 2 Duo with Intel integrated 4500MHD graphics, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 320GB drive, and an LED-backlit screen, all in a four-pound chassis that's 1.27 inches thick at its chubbiest. Not bad -- we'll see what official US pricing is like before we get any more excited, however.
Update: A number of readers from across the pond have wrote in to tell us that Inspiron 13z is also available in the UK.
[Thanks, Toby]

Hmm... This looks cool, but i don't think anything is gonna top my dell mini 9 (http://bit.ly/1KlFjo) its just so awesome for what i need, its pretty slick!
hurray!! our dollar is stronger than Australia's!!!
Hmm.. it's a contender.
So I used to be able to get a screaming fast Dell XPS1330 that was the same size, same weight, similar specs, and had a much faster processor for about $1000 CAD. Now I can get this with a seriously weak 1.3GHz C2D and crappy Intel video for about the same amount of cash. What am I missing that makes this reasonable in any way?
its red
About 0.7kg.
You do get a much better battery life - 8 hours with the 6 cell due to the ULV processor.

yem, I think you're thinking of the Studio 13. The now discontinued XPS1330 was 4lbs, same as this thing, and possibly even thinner than this thing.
Ah you are correct right - or rather I'm wrong. The XPS m1330 was around 2KG and the Studio 13 is 2.2kg but I was thinking of the 11Z (1.35 kg) not this 13Z which is, as you say, nearly the same weight as the XPS notebooks.
I guess the difference is with the 13Z you get better battery life, a little less weight and a little less speed (though not enough for most people to notice) and for a better price (vs Studio 13).
The Inspiron 13z and 15z are now available to buy on the UK Dell website.
- Simon.
and the measurements are correct on the UK site ... they're wrong on the AU site: 1.27" is thicker than the 15z. plus it had the same length and width listed as the 14z. anyway, the UK specs look much more likely to be correct, impressive actually from .68" to 1.04" thick ... much thinner than the m1330 referenced above.
the color is nice!
So the 13z can fit a DVD drive but the 14z can't? I'll take a 13 please!
Who ever uses a DVD drive anyway? I think they should be left out of all laptops built for portability and sold externally
1.27..... thats not that thin
article is wrong. see uk site for specs. 1.04" thin.
This looks good, and i've only ever owned Dell laptops & desktops. I'm liking the new HP DM3T alot more..
This laptop seems good, but the one you should look out for is the new Inspiron 13 not the 13z, the 13 would be good for viewing 720p movies, multitasking etc with its core 2 duo processor and proper dedicated ATi graphics not the CULV c**p, personally i will be waiting for the 13 not the next netbook/notebook 13z.
take a look at the New Inspiron 13 (only at Singapore at the moment - similar to the 13z may even use the same enclosure but much better):

fascinating!
$1100 for a 1.3ghz C2D? That's terrible for that price!
How is it "fascinating" or "a contender"?
For $1100 you can get a far better thin and light computer.
