Nintendo's Miyamoto: next-gen Wii hardware could be "more compact, cost-efficient"
There ain't much to glean from Shigeru Miyamoto's recent sit-down with Popular Mechanics, but in the never-ending quest to learn more about Nintendo's next-generation Wii, a few tidbits of interest have been highlighted. Miyamoto, who is responsible for creating the likes of Mario and Zelda (amongst others), spoke at length about current titles, the future of video games as a whole and on his view of the not-yet-named Wii 2. In answering a question about the future of motion-sensing in the Big N's consoles, he ran off topic a bit and noted that "it would be likely that we would try to make that same functionality perhaps more compact and perhaps even more cost-efficient" when speaking about future hardware (which honestly may have been talking strictly about accelerometers). Of course, this is about as predictable as it gets -- hardware tends to always shrink and get cheaper as technology improves -- but hey, there it is! Now, let your imaginations do what they were born to do.

read the article you dumbasses. he's talking about the controller, making it more compact (eg no Motion Plus hump), not the console. Also, old.
How did you get bumped to the top, when your posting time is less farther than the 4 posts under you?
FYI: My ass is not dumb; many girls find it sexy. So, Mr. Sexyass for you.
Yeah, Miyamoto was talking about the interface (wiimote) and not the console itself. But they could be able to make gamecube hardware REALLY tiny by the time the "Wii 2" comes out.
The wii is still far off into the future. Don't be expecting before 2012...
okay, @ O.P to refresh your mind about what sony motion controller really is: http://pinoytutorial.com/techtorial/a-first-look-at-sony%E2%80%99s-motion-controller/
and also, why did you assume that other readers are thinking of a motion controller? well in fact, you're the only one who proposed that subjective premise.. I bet your ass is located on your brain :D
I hope my hardware never shrinks :(
Is that your bulky wii hardware or are you just happy to see me?
Actually, it is my Touch Pro 2 with its 3.5 mm dongle (T-Mobile one).
Only female pheromones activate my perceptual sensors. :D Sorry to disappoint you. You may want to visit an Apple Store :D (My bad, my bad, I just could not resist - dang, low ranked for sure :( )
Where did you buy your drugs?
Also known as "Gamecube hardware in an even smaller box."
The next DS = Wii 2. It's probably their way of centralizing games and having people buy accessories.
On another note: I really wish well to Nintendo. This people brought us the Game Boy, Mario Bros and Pokemon. Nintendo is special part of my childhood. The Wii may not even like the graphic master, but it is sure fun to play, like most Nintendo products have been. Remember the Shooting Duck game? I think I still have that orange and gray shotgun somewhere.
Translation: It'll be cheaper for the big N, but no cheaper for the consumer!
Even if the sticker price of the Wii 2 is the same as it was for the Wii when it was first launched then what we are talking about here is a product that tons of people were willing to pay for in the past, but now it comes with HD and possibly even more goodies. I'd say it is a win/win situation for consumers and Nintendo.
@Xavier - Totally true. In addition, more capital the company has, more investment, expansion, research, etc.
Maybe they'll use Tegra for both the handheld and the console?
Bah. They should throw in at least a Geforce 9800 GTX so they can finally put an end to the Xbox 360 and PS3's graphics bragging rights. I could care less if the new Wii becomes as big as the Xbox 1 (though I really don't mind if it's THAT durable. The Xbox 1 is a tank) as long as it's got an internal hard drive and badass performance.
Well I hate to disagree, but the hardware doesn't "always" get smaller:

LOL ! You pay it with your feet. It is particularly good for Dance, Dance Revolution XXL
Trying to squeeze as much money out of that gamecube technology as possible :) haha. jk jk jk
Reading it in context, it seems clear he's just expressing what we all have: the Motion Plus makes the controller too big, complicated, and expensive. He expects that to change for the next system, with one streamlined controller that includes more functionality and a lower price tag that reflects the lower component price with time and mass production.
They should really integrate Wiimotionplus into the Wiiremote THIS generation.
I agree. At this point, they may feel it is too confusing to introduce another skew and will just wait until next gen to remedy the situation.
They are going to make the Wiibuttplug, which will translate your hand, eye and butt gestures in real times. Then there will be a Wiibuttpluglubeplus that will make your butt gestures slightly more motion-y.
Nintendo. Making our Wiis smaller.
isn't it a little early in the console's lifespan to start talking next generation?
We're nearly 4 years into this generation, so no it isn't too soon. Especially considering that the Wii isn't much more powerful than a last-gen console.
The average console generation is 5-6 years. The Wii has been out for almost 3 years now.
They're sticking with the Wii for another generation? Son, I am disappoint.
Yes, that is exactly what it said.
They're talking about the current generation. The wii hardware is going to change in THIS generation. Nintendo doesn't do the naming thing they do for their portables as they do for consoles. It won't be Wii 2 on the next console.
Actually, Miyamoto is talking about the Wiimote + Wii motion plus more compact.
"With both the Wii remote itself and Wii Motion Plus, what we've been able to do is introduce an interface that is both I think appealing and at the right price for a broad audience.
"And while we don't have any concrete plans for what we'll be doing with hardware in the future, what I can say is that, my guess is that because we found this interface to be so interesting, I think it would be likely that we would try to make that same functionality perhaps more compact and perhaps even more cost-efficient."
I read that as "not any more powerful or with better graphics or real HD".
C'mon... you KNOW the Wii 2 has just gotta be called the Wii Wii!
Of course, HD will mean 720p. Don't want to get too hasty with that trendy and sure to fail 1080p and higher now, do we?
I don't think the Xbox or PS3 go that high they just don't have the rendering capabilities.
2 Wii's ductape'd together!
So the next-gen Wii is going to have old / crappy / cheap hardware in it......Are you sure he's talking about the NEXT-gen Wii???
It's a strange 'ad', to say you want to be cheapskates most of all basically.
That's not going to get anybody excited, not even investors, at least not western ones I bet.
does anyone care? everyone groans whenever someone mentions a Wii now. most people just use it as an expensive white doorstop.
