LAb[au]'s f5x5x5 framework sculpture mesmerizes on video
It's been nearly three full years since we've seen anything hot and fresh from LAb[au], but thankfully, said drought is decidedly over. By using a combination of aluminum, Plexiglas, LED lights, determination, wit, stepper motors, critical thinking and IR tracking technologies, the f5x5x5 sculpture was created. Dubbed a "kinetic and luminous framework," the installation is part of a larger '16n' project designed to confront architectural problems (like congestion and flows) with spatial sensing technologies. We know, that's all pretty deep -- but if you're just lookin' for a good time, we'd recommend heading past the break, mashing play and dropping your kudos in comments.

For some reason, I'm reminded of the movie "Cube 2: Hypercube" while watching those things spin...
That's not 5x5x5...it appears to be about 5x1x20.
Take each box shape to be one, its 5 boxes high and i would say each section is 5 boxes long.
There is 5 sections of 5x5
so 5x5x5
That would be (5x5)*5, not 5x5x5.
revisit the 3rd grade and order of operations. also, * means the same as x.
...multiplicatiowned.
@CtrlBurn Dude, 5 is not a vector. No need to pull a scalar triple product here.
rarrr....
Too bad this thing will never be allowed in California
expecting to see this in SAW X.
That's the crappiest video player ever. Play 2 seconds, then buffer for 5. Repeat.
Agreed. Why is it buffering every 2s when the bar shows half the video has already loaded? Crap!
The video itself does the presentation no favors. WTF do I have to download a 7:55 video that has only 0:53 of content? The rest is just a black screen!
The content is also such a tease... certainly not enough there to 'get it'.
This is art? Even the W7 dominoes extravaganza beats this sad collection of techno-cliches.
I don't get it.
And why are they in a church?
Does anyone else see this video as a 7:55 video with about 6 minutes of black in there?
It's an art-thing.
"confront architectural problems (like congestion and flows) with spatial sensing technologies"
I lol'd hard.
It is never shown from one angle long enough to actually see what it does. They change the angle and blur the image constantly, I guess in an attempt to make the video artsy as well.
This has been stolen from this following website: http://www.mmimran.com/mmimran/SAG.html
On the website from artist and architect Michel Mimran you can see that it has already been done in 1992.
It has been exhibited several times in Luxembourg.
You can find better videos on the project's page sitting on LAb[au]'s website. http://lab-au.com/projects/f5x5x5/
Anything remotely useful would have a better video then that.
how would one go about pronouncing LAb[au], is that french in origin? i would not at all be surprised were he french.....
LAb[au] stands for "laboratory for architecture and urbanism" - it is a collaborative agency based in Brussels, Belgium.
I guess you could pronounce it as Labow ;-)
hah, thanks, i was too lazy too google something because i wasn't all that impressed by it and i was made to look silly, now knowing that though it seems odd that they would exhibit it in a Gothic cathedral where it just looks out of place and lame as opposed to one of the many beautiful Bauhaus/international style buildings at their disposal in that part of the world, where, with white walls, concrete, etc it probably would have looked awesome... for some reason thanks to the overall crappiness of the video (i.e. bad angles, tony scott-ish aggressive cuts) i couldn't think of anything except that shitty Arnie movie "end of days" which kinda ruins serious art/design, at least for me....
Does anyone know what this thing does?
They need to put up an HD of that on Vimeo... also 80% of the video is just blank.
i just found one on vimeo: http://vimeo.com/7032070
The blankness is clearly intentional, because of the credits popping in for the last 20 seconds. Yea, it's kinda weird, but that's art for you...
I've been on http:://www.mmimran.com/mmimran/SAG.html as thinkpopular said, and it is exactly the same concept indeed.
Except that Lab wasn't able to do this with virtual images and spent a lot of money to duplicate such a project.
The video is not perfect but I saw that installation on site and it was a very good work!!!
Please have a look on their website they do a very cool work!
