It would be great if you could download your route + nearby areas before the trip. That would solve the 'off network' issue with limited memory use.
I think I read somewhere it caches the data in case you hit a dead zone or something, so even if you don't have a signal it works
Google already said that they were going to let some of the route sit in memory in case u get out of range
