For the most part, we'd say that Sony
addressed the concerns of many when it introduced the
PlayStation 3 Slim. The console was smaller, cheaper and easier on the eyes, and of course the 120GB hard drive didn't hurt matters either. That said, we know that the redesign didn't please everyone, and we've heard more than a few PS3 diehards complain about the new design. If it were you designing a newer, less expensive PlayStation 3, what would
you have done differently? Kept
PS2 backwards compatibility? Colored it white? Added HD DVD support? Don't be scared to get a little crazy -- besides, they call that "innovation" in the corporate world.
Make the BD drive faster.
@Jason: What does your post even mean? And how do you people link this to Apple? This has nothing to do with Apple.
Yea not a bad idea, then again Uncharted 2 loads on the fly without any load screens whatsoever. It's almost like magic, cutscene into gameplay into cutscene completely seamless. Makes you wonder why other companies can't do this. The only thing I could think of is PS2 BC but that's the obvious one.
bundle it with 50in HDTV, and a catapult.
By not starting a flame war
Make it $199.99 with only a 40 or 20GB Drive.
All these extra feature only add to the price; the average user doesn't know anything about them and Doesn't care. Heck, they buy Xbox360 without HDD because it is $200. Soon the 360 60gb will be 200 and Sony will have to keep up.
I am a Die Hard fan of Greatness That's why I bought this Shiny box on day1 in the San Carlos, Ca BestBuy. Right next to Sony HQ ;-). Even though I bought it for $600 I would love to see it expand widely by reaching the $200 price mark.
PS: and Yeah Phuk You Jason
build a gaming PC
sighwhen will sony learn from apple and the 360, its not all about hardware but more importantly how you interact with it and that's were sony is severely lacking. their online and ui is unusable and that is why my ps3 collects dust.
@Jason
So you're saying you won't buy it unless Apple buys the same hardware, stick the apple logo on it, markup the price by a few hundred bucks?
I have to agree with High. I love my new Slim, and Uncharted 1 and 2 have both robbed me of a social life lately, but I'm going to be buying Modern Warfare II for the 360 when it comes out because the online implementation for the PS3 is an absolute joke. I signed up as much as was necessary to get the firmware updates, and that is it because I could not believe how much of a pain in the ass the online setup was versus the 360. It's been said before, but it deserves saying again: Yes, PSN is free while Live is 50 dollars a year, but the difference is, Live is worth every penny.
Other then that, I can't think of anything else that needs changing. People say the BD drive is slow, but it works fast enough for me, and like others pointed out above, it loads a huge game like Uncharted 2 seamlessly, without requiring an install either. I hope other game studios are paying attention to Naughty Dog's example here. All in all, besides my quibbles with the online service, I'm really happy with my purchase, and don't have to worry about being locked out of a specific game or DLC thanks to the bullshit exclusivity rivalry MS and Sony have going on.
Put linux back in
let remoteplay work with DVD/bluray movies
1080p/1080i hardware upscaling
usb 3.0
dual hdmi
Whoa whats the problem all jason said is put an apple logo on it. This is how would YOU change...Stop being fan boys, crying at any mention of apple or the iphone, its sad.

Haha it seems my name is Jason too...at first glance I was like what the hell when did I say that? I quickly realized it was a different Jason making us other Jasons look like fools.
why must all you people feed Jason's troll comment.
Why is he a fool though? I dont see what he's done wrong, am I missing something?
To stay on topic: I'm still a little bitter, I bought my regular 80gb ps3 only 7 months before the slim came out. Only thing stopping me from upgrading(?) though is the fact I can't load ubuntu anymore.
Sell it for $99.
Give it 7.1 analog output with quality DACs.
I would love it!
...and bring back Backwards Compatability!!
Add FLAC, OGG, and (H264) .MOV support to all PS3 consoles. Heck, while your at it;Add ipod music sharing compatibility.
PS3 as a music player and slide show player:
Change the software-- allowing you to play your mp3 music, and a game at the same time. Or play your mp3 music and a picture slide show at the same time. Change the music software-- where it is more like itunes-- you can search for new songs while a song is playing. Currently, you have to stop the song that is playing in order to start a new song. This is not good for a party or other entertainment.
Also, add a flip up 4 inch monitor to view music selections without have to use your tv. For people who play their mp3 threw their stereo, it a hassle to have to use the tv to see what is playing. Some people want to watch tv and listen to music at the same time.
I'd make it bigger
I'd add a beefy right arm, Strongbad-style. jk
Seriously, a smaller hard drive and make it $200. Not everyone needs a gigantic hard drive.
Bring back PS2 AND PS1 compatibility, please!
Be able to view your music by folder, the way you put it in, instead of breaking it down into album \ artist etc. its a nightmare how it splits your compilations up.
In an ideal world, added backwards compatibility and added a multi-card reader... Those features are so useful on my 60GB
You hit the nail right on the head.
In fact, its so obvious what the PS3 slim's flaws are. And that's a shame considering the launch 60GB offered so much more.
Whoever is over at SONY making these design decisions should be FIRED. I can live without the card reader but how much more difficult would it be to add software emulation for PS2 games?
PS2 backwards compatibility would great. Not really sure about the multi-card reader, I never use it, and the PS3 recognizes pretty much any USB reader. They need to keep their costs down.
One thing that would be nice is if they would put in HDMI cables in the box. They are cheap, and they should at least put it in the more expensive bundles and configurations.
I don't know which is worse: include HDMI initially and then take it out of the package after a price drop, or not include an "el cheapo" cable and let you choose what to buy (cheap or expensive).
i agree with @ClarkyAC
In an ideal world, Sony would support MKV and SRT(subtitle) files. It can't be hard. If they did this they would make an already amazing media box even better. I mean, at LEAST have subtitles for the movies you can rent from the PSN video store.
My older request was going to be Netflix support, but that's already been confirmed for November....
I agree with BC, not the card reader, as most things that have cards these days have either micro or mini USB ports and most people have one of those (especially as the PS3 controller charger is a mini USB cable).
However I would go for an update that made it able to read external drives in a format that isn't fat32, so I can put files >4gb on it and read them with the PS3.
Also, native MKV support would be tasty, I'd rather my computer not have to transcode all the MKV videos...
I don't know about backwards comparability. I am sure I am not the only one out there being a newbie to the Sony platform when it came to the PS3. While I have a 60GB and Slim in my home, I never played PS/PS2 games before and so it wasn't a requirement. If I need a multicard reader, I am sure one could be had in retail for a sawbuck and just use the USB.
People mention that they can just buy USB card readers, but nobody mentions more USB ports... 2 is way too few! Not enough for the guitar hero set! It should be 4 like the original.
Make it have an external sata connector
I actually get a decent amount of use out of the multicard reader on my 80GB (with BC!) cause of digital cameras and SD cards. BC is kind of a mixed bag - some months I don't use it at all, but other times it's just nice to be able to get some more replay value out of Shadow of the Colossus or whatnot, esp with new PS3 games being $60. The lack of MKV support isn't really an issue for me - I have a server good enough to use PS3 Media Server to live transcode, and really, there's no way to put a big enough drive in to store enough HD content to make it worth it.
MKV support may be realistic to expect for the future, I believe I saw DivX 7 mandate support for it, right? So all it would take for PS3 to be DivX 7 certified would be a simple firmware update.
I'm fairly certain the reason Sony removed backwards compatibility is not so much for the cost of keeping it in, but because it represents a potential revenue stream which requires very little investment: offering re-encoded PS2 games for download for a fee. They've already given us MvC 2 and FF VII. Someday I expect to be able to download RE 4 and all other PS1 / PS2 games for $14.99 each! ;P
@Monkey Fetish
get hold of PS3 Media Server as it should be able to repackage MKVs into a container that the PS3 will play. http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/
however, I agree, the PS3 is very fussy about codecs and file formats. for example, when I use the beebhack get_iplayer to download programs to keep, the PS3 won't play them in the format intended for iphones, nor will it play flvs directory. I have a program which creates a web page and embeds the FLV with a flash player for the PS3!
I wouldve kept the Piano Gloss Finish and the ORIGINAL PS3 Logo
God no, the spiderman font is awful. I do agree with you on the finish. I think the new finish is a step down from the piano black.
I definitely prefer the piano black. I don't feel one way or the other about the logo/font. The piano black just seems so much more upscale as a design choice.
Amen!
Oleophobic piano black!
Am I the only one that misses the touch sensitive power and eject buttons? Of course the piano black was a nice touch hard to keep clean but hey makes you want to clean that area of the house more often...
I was very happy to see the back of the glossy finish and touch-sensitive buttons!
Backwards compatibility would definitely be nice - I need to play FFXII and Okami on something after all (looks like it'll be my pc then). I remember back when the PS2 was launching that BC was stressed to be very much part of Sony's strategy - may just be my memory going though.
The size and design of the thing quite disappointed me too - lets hope they have another go at some point and get somewhere closer to the diminutive elegance of the PStwo.
Make it fat again!
Make PS3 Slim (or slimmer like PS2 Slim)
