Sony Ericsson lets XPERIA X10 videos and press shots loose
If you weren't up all night following Engadget (and why wouldn't you be?), the first place you'll want to visit this morning is our extensive hands-on of Sony Ericsson's inaugural foray into Android territory. There you'll find the full XPERIA X10 announcement details and spec sheet, which is highlighted by a 4-inch capacitive display and a deeply customized user interface. With plenty of time to go before that first quarter of 2010 release date, though, we thought we'd get the anticipation revved up a few notches with a selection of handsome images of the device below, and a pair of videos -- one a spit-polished advertising promo, the other a useful demo of Speed Forge 3D -- after the break.

Any one know what the video recorder on this does?
480p?
Qualcomm states WVGA (800x480) for the Snapdragon platform, but the TG-01 and HD2 both do only VGA (640x480).
HD2 does 800x480. What are you talking about?
iJames:
From your comment, I can tell you're not knowledgeable on anything relating to tech.
"Slightly faster than the crappy G1 processor?"
Are you serious? Do you understand the difference between the normal ARM 11 and Cortex A8 chipsets? Or are you just stupid?
Since you seem to be an Apple fan, look at this. Old iMacs had 3.33Ghz Core 2 Duo. The new has 3.06 Core i7. Guess which one is faster?
Before you spout nonsense, at least learn something about technology please. Just a tiny bit. At least just the differentiation of processor and their clock speeds. Thank you.
P.S.
Thank the Lord it's not an iPhone either. Or else we'd be left with a button and grid of icons. Along with limited multitasking, low-res 3.5 in screen, and the need to jailbreak and void warranties in order to get anything done.
@iJames
Learn to read. Did I say "no multitask?" No I did not. I said it correctly. LIMITED multitask. That part of your comment is shot down.
Screen. Sharp, crisp. So is the HD2. So is the Droid. So is the Xperia. So the point still stands...it's low res compared to the newest devices hitting the market. And this isn't even OLED/AMOLED. Another point shot down.
And "hack" our WinMo/BB/Android phones. You make me laugh. The funny thing about that is...those users don't have to "hack" anything. That's the iPhone where you have to "hack" and void a warranty just to get a wallpaper or them. How can you even defend that?
And to address that...most folks do that to show that the iPhone UI is nothing of a marvel. And I've yet to see mainstream use of an iPhone UI on these phones. I see BB with BB. I see Android with Sense more than iPhone. And I see WinMo with SPB shell. So what are you talking about?
I'm not going to make this a "iPhone sucks" post. Because it don't. iPhone is a nice piece of hardware. But it has it's flaws and limitations which you so fervently want to protect. I don't get why, but you do.
But the main point of my comment has not been mentioned upon. Why are you on a tech blog feigning tech know-how. Yet you can't even tell the difference between superior processors and their clock speeds. You seem to think clock speed is level across all processors with your comment.
Learn something kid. Then try coming back.
Yes. Because you operate your phone from the lock screen. /sarcasm
You're running out of points kid. You claim there's no need to jailbreak. But yet, Jobs sees it as such a big deal that he has made a new firmware that further locks people from jailbreaking. Hmm. I doubt they'd spend time fixing a problem that many people didnt do.
Yet, you still havent touched base on your inability to understand a processor, different level processors, and their clock speed. You keep going back to how the "iPhone is this and that."
So you proved to me a lot in just these few post. Mainly, you know nothing of what you speak of, outside of "The iPhone is the greatest."
Which is good for you. Your preference. Your choice. But nothing but opinion. The rubbish is coming from your post. Take another look.
I'll still be waiting on the answer to the main question I asked before you started going on a tangent about irrelevant things and incorrect things.
iPhone is the dumass joke of the industry now. Did you know they still can't do full Bluetooth corectly? You know, that 4 year old + technology.... that's just the tip of the iceburg...
@iDavey responding to me
No, the screen res is WVGA, but the device itself only records in VGA, many previews have confirmed this, one guy said it's WVGA, but he corrected that later.
It's a shame, I know, but I hope that the guys at XDA will somehow be able to get the WVGA working on it (I can deal with 25FPS if I have to).
Now, back on the topic of the X10; am I the only one who thinks the UI is absolutely hideous?
@iDave "Yes. Because you operate your phone from the lock screen. /sarcasm"
Actually, with my G1 I *do* operate my phone from my lockscreen.
Educate yourself before shitting out of your piehole:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=557061
iJames White, your comments and slavish love of the iPhone is laughable. I have one and its good, and my wife has one as well and likes it - that being said, I do hope for the next great device. See, you're a moron because you just sit and want 0 progress in the tech front. You don't want better processors or UI, you just want to think that you have the best device there is and fear the fact that you may not.
Wake the f*ck up man - progressing past a 2 year old device is good for the world. Maybe not your fragile ego, but that doesn't mean a damn thing to the rest of us. Go masturbate while editing the iPhone Wiki and let the rest of us talk about new technology without your backwards inadequacy issues spewed all over it.
@WaffleSlayer
I was speaking on the iPhone with iJames.
Kindly educate YOURSELF before hopping into a conversation.
No harshness meant...just saying.
Sure is told in this thread.
First time to see Sony-ericcson all "balls-deep" on a new smartphone in particular an android phone. We agree, that Xperia has a bitter history on older models. Hopefully, this X10 release will turned out to be a happy-ending. But still, this phone has a far way to go on competing the iPhone kind or the Killer-Droid
detailed preview + official vid from Head of Xperia X10: http://bit.ly/xperia-x10-best-or-worst-android-phone
Kudus, to the "classy" promotional vid
I can't believe I stayed up all night knowing that something like this and the other Ericsson post was going to show up!
Anyways i believe its going to be a pretty nice handheld but price is whats going to shoot it down :\
My contract is ending by January. Hope if the reviews good, i would buy this. If iPhone4 comes in T-mobile in UK, i will consider which is the best. :)
I'll take both.
The black and the white? Or the phone with the woman included?
I love that it has no Google markings on it and Android looks completely hidden beneath 'Rachael.' This is potentially something I would get, here is to hoping that 1700mHz support is utilized in the US and not in Korea or Canada. I'd potentially buy this phone, cyanogen mod it and call it good :)
Let it be potentially?
Specs show there are two versions. One that supports AT&T 3G, another that supports T-Mobile's 3G
totally a fail, dont like this phone
no 2.0
Wow, and some people thought the IPhone was pretty!
too much gimmicks in UI.
BEAUTIFUL!!!
Yes, the girl in the promo vid is pretty hot. So her name is Rachael? Also, her boyfriend at the end is a douche.
Oh wait, were you talking about the phone?
jk
SonyEriccson is dead as is Motorola. Anybody remember thier hyped to the max mobile X1. Remember the price? Remember how log it took them to deliver? Now another successor that will hit a vivid marked with no chance to ever make it.
Do you mean this one?
http://www.whoisjohnny-x.com/index.aspx?en-gb
And a STANDARD headjack!!!!
Seems like they did? http://www.engadget.com/photos/xperia-x10-official-pictures/2415470/
iPhone - blast from the past?
Where's the buy now button??
Mulit-touch anyone?
I prefer not touching "mulits." ;)
http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-announced-we-go-hands-on/2412901/
Zoom buttons... no multi-touch
Excuse me, no "pinch zoom" which I assume is what you meant
i agree with some other comments that the UI is a bit over the top, i'm thinking it could actually be quite annoying in use.
i hope i'm wrong but i can imagine performance taking a hit while all the transitions and effects do their thing on screen as well.
i bet stock android would fly on this thing!
will the lack of google branding and the lack of 2.0 mean no google maps nav?
i'm just not as convinced as i'd hoped to be...
also Q1 2010 - anyone taking bets on how far that'll slide?
I'm no techie, but is it possible to just uninstall the SE version of Android and install the basic "Google Experience" version? Like you can do with PCs; reinstalling the OS.
It'll be possible like any other android handset on the market. We just need root access and someone to customize the rom for the device.
Sony Xperia is the hot chick right?
My previous Sony Ericcson phones never worked properly after a while. I hope they made this one reliable...
I'm still waiting for the Satio A =(
Apple better step up there game.
Or their game. I'm an asshole.
touché, I would have done the same. I know better but wasn't even paying attention.
Touché. You're starting a sentence.
the top part reminds me of a HP iPaq....
and it looks huge....
but since it can be stuffed into the girl's shorts pocket, i guess the size is fine....
But how big were those pockets really?
Sony seemed to think the VIAO P would be pocketable too ;)
Am I reading correctly? Are they going to make you pay for Wayfinder for GPS? That's bunk now that we know Google has it's free app, and that even Verizon is going to allow its use.
That's a region specific inclusion. Most likely won't even make it's way to the US (If the phone even makes it way to the US)
Love the design. GUI looks nice and shiny. Let's hope it's just as nice to use.
Definitely going to be a killer phone!
how can it be an iPhone killer when 10 phones released in the past 2 years have already killed it?
He didn't say iPhone killer. He said " killer phone". A difference am sure.
GSM is a fail in the US. Plus, you're showing it to me now and it doesn't release until spring of next year? That's not how the game is played anymore, Windows Mobile-- I mean, Sony. You show your cards then you play them. Spring? Please.
Title under last video says Sound Forge when the vid is Speed Forge
i was thinking that didnt look at all like the sound forge i know
Engadget should have put up some kind of cringe warning before that promo vid it looks like to was made by a couple of school kids.
Agreed. The promo video is a mark AGAINST the phone.
In all other respects, it looks pretty solid, though pretty thick when compared to the HD2 or TG01.
And before anybody else get confused like in the previous article, in the US, this will be crappy AT&T only
Rachel/X10a = 800/850/1900/2100
AT&T = 850/1900
T-Mobile = 1700/2100 (you need both numbers, not just one)
I'm in NY so Rachel will be useless in 3G, Droid will be a better choice with verizon at least for another year.
Will you stop posting misleading information. Learn to read.
http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-press-release-and-spec-sheet/2413834/
Look at what the first HSPA says.
900/1700/2100 = T-Mobile.
Now kindly hush please. Thank you.
Can you not read?
You'd think S-E would have learned from the X1 debacle not to rev-up the hype engine for a phone that's not scheduled to become available for at least 3 months.
I think the X1 did relatively well, though, despite its interface and hardware failings. At least, I still see them everywhere, where I live.
I have to say, that is one sweet looking phone, and the interface looks beautiful as well.
it looks sweet, is the processor clocked like the Liquid?
Am I reading this right?
It won't be released for another 3-4 months, and yet it will still use a version of an OS that's outdated right now, let alone in 4 months.
Has SE announced any plans on upgrading to Android 2.X (let's face it, when this thing comes out, Eclair 2.0 won't be the newest stable version) at a later date?
i agree with you on that one
Right. I'm hoping 1.6 was just used for demo purposes. Because wasn't the excuse for waiting so long to develop an Android phone cause they wanted to wait for 2.0?
Actually, from what I've been seeing they actually are planning to run Android 1.6 at launch. Sounds like they are anticipating a possible upgrade to 2.x several months after launch.
That, and the fact that there is almost no T-mobile 3G coverage just about kills it for me.
@Pete
There is T-Mobile bands. 1700/2100 is the HSPA bands for T-Mobile 3G.
damn she's gorgeous.
i agree with this as well
So it won't even hit the euro markets for supposedly another 4 months at the least and then you'll probably have to wait another 4-5 months till it *might* hit the US shores at a very high price?
Sounds like a winner.
i am not convinced that this UI will look this fluid in real life .. theres far too much going on for stuff that has no function .. like on the photo screens and all that ..
but all in all it looks nice .. even if the Promo video is very corny with this "it's my world" tune .. eewww lol
You know these ads are boring same old thing, women buying clothes, eating with friends, and going to an art galary, and don't forget ridding on the back of her boyfriend's motorcycle/scooter, doesn't any one work any more!? Why do they have so little phone ads with people going to work, and making money. Hell even throw in some shots of an exec using his/her phone on a private jet to make it intersting. Or is it just blackberry owners that make any real money?
"doesn't any one work any more!?"
This is from Europe so the answer would obviously be no.
Wally, wally, wally. Aren't you aware that people in marketing have a one track mind and think that every potential cell customer is a club hopping, Lady Ga-Ga dancing moron that dreams only of playing and not working? (i feel your pain)
@ NOCknock: LMFAO! So true. You COMPLETELY nailed the marketing people vibe. It's all got to be about the 'shiny happy' nonsense, and the promo has that kind of generic doucheness up the wazoo.
It would be fascinating if it would come from any other company but SE.
Once again they anounce a supposedly revolutionary phone 5/6 months before the supposed launch date, it will probably delayied a couple of times more, and by the time it will finally hit store's shelves it will be obsolete and look like nothing what had been promised.
I would love to be proved wrong but I have preordered a HD2: to wait for a phone promised by SE is very much like waiting for Charlize Theron to ring you up to ask you if you could possibly find the time to give her some sex lessons.
ONLY reason i am interested is because it's from SE. Best damn phones ever. I have a p800 and p900, people still come up and think the p900 is a brand new phone and drool over it!
Is the game really this easy?
Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 looks good - good enough to tempt me...
Will be checking out the Developer White Paper at Ericsson as well...
Way to go Sony Ericsson...
Bad timing...should have been out at least a year earlier!
going by SE track records.
this phone will get delay, delay and more delay!
u lucky if you able to get it by end of Summer 2010!
Biggest disappointment is lack of big built in memory. I was hoping for 32GB built in. In this era when flash is so cheap they should have put at least 16GB.
Still I would consider this over milestone/hd2 bcos SE makes awesome music phones. Their quality is way better than the others.I am hoping unlocked version is available in 3 months. I need to buy couple of 16GB microSD.
Why doesn't this have Android 2.0, especially as it will be released in Q1 2010 and Motorola Droid has it and will be released like next week. Also there are other new Android phones coming out with 1.6 and even 1.5.
Aaaahhhh Google what is going on! Do you have favouritism towards your American compatriot Motorola?????? NOT COOL
I am disappointed about the OS, but hardware seems really good and 1500 mHA? capacity battery will be good to handle the mighty 1Ghz Snapdragon.
Normally I could care less about yet another cell phone, but this I like.
Not really interested in the phone, looks huge and ugly but I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.
However the guy in the Speed Forge 3D is cute.
What on earth is an "infinity button", and most imprtantly, will it bend the time space weave and allow us to peak into other dimensions? Anticipating a negative answer on that question, it is still a pretty damn sexy peice of harware/software package. It definitely triggers a severe Pavlovian response in the gadget glands, time for a significant upgrade I think (Iphone is so 2009). :-)
WOW, finally a Sony phone that doesn't look like it's a Gen-Y sports gadget.
Looks like a LG Shine, nicely done Sony.
Looks like this has a front facing camera. T-Mobile said they are gonna have video conferencing in 1st quarter 2010 hmmm
I was thinking about jumping ship from AT&T for Verizon when I saw the Droid, however after seeing this I might have to re-think things. Also @ shapey and iDavey from what i gathered from this link provided by iDavey http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-press-release-and-spec-sheet/2413834/ it comes w/ Android 1.6 and a free trial of Wisepilot turn by turn nav so that means no free google nav app. I would imaging come spring their will be either an instant upgrade or it will ship w/ 2.0 if not then fail for me. Also the X10 only includes a 8GB micro SD compared to the Droids 16GB.
why are these devices running older version of Andriod and then there is no multi touch, when iphone has multi touch for years. no xeon flash. why these companies make one step forward in some areas and then couple step backwards in others on the same device. very frustrating.
Wow. Looks like a very sweet device. SE really know how to make a sturdy and sexy piece of hardware.
Between all these great android units coming out and the future of webos it looks like there is 0 reason to ever consider an iphone now considering they've been proven inferrior in almost every area.
I just hope by launch they can make this plenty fast.
Looks interesting - but sort of big. Anyone know if they are planning a slider on it? It looks just about thick enough.
Could this be the perfect phone? Looks pretty darn close... Makes the iPhone look fat, ugly, and slow. And I love my 3G S. :)
Man that phone is making me feel like it's time to ditch the iPhone. If everything is as fluid as it shows in the video, I'm in. Android 2.0 is looking very nice. My only problem, and yeah I know it's an old argument but a true one, is the app store.
How is googles app store? With a difference in processors and screen resolutions for android phones, are there any quality games?
Another question, will I be able to get push notifications even if I don't have a gmail account? I also don't have myspace or facebook, is there a way I can connect to the PC and sync my contacts? Could I sync my contacts wirelessly from MobileMe?
I think gaming without buttons is not just a good idea, takes too much effort. Also you may want to push a button really hard.
The phone is sweeeet... but I thought I might get a seizure from watching the video.... must have hired Michael Bay.
