Apple TV 3.0.1 update prevents data from 'temporarily disappearing'
Enjoy your Apple TV? Not so fond of your data picking up and vanishing whenever it darn well pleases? Then you'll probably want to force your Apple TV to update to 3.0.1... assuming you've already upgraded it to 3.0, of course. According to the engineers in Cupertino, this update prevents content "from temporarily disappearing until re-synced," and we're guessing that most of you would rather keep your content around if possible. Tap the read link for all the instructions, and whatever you do, don't make any sudden movements.

Props to Apple for finding this as quickly as they did AND getting it fixed too. Must have been a very small little syncing issue. Thanks for the quick fix Apple!
Yeah, I hate it when little sync issues wipe out my data. You do realize that lost data is the least acceptable bug you can have. It sounds like this deleted data, and then it came back via a re-sync. Hopefully nobody had data on the AppleTV that got their by means other than iTunes, cause it sounds like they are screwed.
Between this and the Guest account issue, it sounds like Apple is playing pretty loose when it comes to data protection, and quite honestly that is not something that can just be glossed over as an innocent mistake. Remember the Kindle 1984 debacle? Amazon settled for $150,000 for deleting a kid's homework notes. Deleting data is a huge litigation risk, and data is valued at a far greater dollar amount than most people realize.
to bad i don't have Apple TV i was smart enough to get a Mac Mini instead
Were you? If you were smart enough you would have gotten Windows Media Center
I thought about that too but I was worried it would break as often as my first and second gen Xbox's.
And even though I am the one that had to get them fixed, and how true this is, this post will get voted down.
@Dragngt, Did you somehow void your warranty on your Xbox360? Microsoft was pretty gracious to recognize the problem and triple everyone's warranty for free.Yes the RROD of death was a horrible design flaw and MS should get publicly flogged for it as they have been. However, we should recognize they did the right thing by their customers in offering what was an unprecedented warranty extension for a game console. I wish more companies would step up and eat the cost for consumer pain. I haven't personally known anyone to get the RROD after 3 years of use, but I suppose it could happen.
if Microsoft keep doing "hello, mac suks ass" commercial 247 then you will be allowed to say "You people act like Windows doesn't have a shitload of problems of it's own"
Mine was wiped clean last night - I transferred all my data back last night- then got the email today. Day late and a dollar short.
Good thing I don't keep any data on my apple tv. I've not found a way to stuff a terabyte of data onto a 30 gigabyte hard drive.
This is actually a great feature! It makes you get up off of your fat ass, jump around, and curse loudly when you realize your stuff is missing! You'll burn calories! You'll lose time and money you won't spend on fatty foods! Brilliant!
Apple engineers are geniuses.
Although this latest issue didn't affect my Apple TV I have to note that this is not the first time that the Apple TV has had a problem with deleting your content. There was a similar problem in the v2 software that went unfixed for months. Here is a link to an article which appeared in June 2009 on MacWorld/MacCentral that documented this problem (a syncing issue where all of the purchased content stored on the Apple TV was deleted by iTunes requiring you to re-sync everything once again).

Fortunately, this earlier problem was fixed shortly after the MacWorld article was published (but several months after the problem was first reported by users).
To all Apple Fanboys:
You people act like Mac OS X doesn't have a shitload of problems of it's own
Yeah, Microsoft is flawed in many ways, we know. Unless you own some magical operating system that is immune to any and all errors, shut the fuck up already.
@Michael Douche bag
I bet that you are the type of iDiot that loves to point out the flaws in any Windows OS, yet when it comes to OS Xista you will not hear any of it. The way Apple spins it Windows is the only OS that is full of bugs and causes uses endless headaches; however their OS is flawless "it just works".
FYI, the data is not actually disappearing, only the coolest Apple users can see it.
and they are creating Apple Ads : Broken promise :)
Guess it's a karma.
mine was all gone from it by the time I updated. Boo. now i have to re-sync anyway.
they're still selling that overpriced paperweight?
You should immediately reply to this comment to prevent it from temporarily disappearing.
PC fanboys are so funny.
I love how engadget purposely left off 'until re-synced' from the title. Whoa, it's gone for a whole few minutes, let's bash Apple about it.
OK, I am up for this game. You minimize it as if it is no big deal and only for a few minutes. So here is a simple scenario that could easily play out. Tell me if it is a hassle or not.
Bob is a Mac user, he loves his Macbook and takes it with him everywhere he goes. His wife Gertrude, doesn't have a Macbook, but loves her iPhone just as much. Bob due to his love for all things Apple has an AppleTV, so that he and his family can watch all of the content that they have purchased through iTunes on his TV. This is a good thing, because while Bob is at work with his Macbook, it makes it more convenient for Gertrude to watch her favorite TV show, and play lullaby music for little Timmy. Unfortunately Bob was on a business trip this week in Singapore, and won't be back until Monday. So when the data disappeared off the AppleTV until a re-sync, it made the thing unusable for the week.
Lost data is lost data, just because almost all users have a backup doesn't make it acceptable to delete it.
