Flash 10.1 coming to webOS in first half 2010, says kinder, gentler Adobe page
Adobe may be a bit curt with its page to Apple and its iPhone faithful, but try getting Flash from a webOS device, and the company's got a message of hope: Flash 10.1 is coming, just wait until the first half of 2010. We don't know how long this message has been up there, but as far as both we and PreCentral can tell, it's fresh. It's certainly a date we haven't seen before -- last we heard a public beta was coming the end of this year, which may or may not still be the plan if the above message is referring to a final, non-beta release. Now you current Pre / future Pixi owners have something else to look forward to besides release 1.3.1.

I should be happy, but I just want flash to go away. Like, forever.
agreed flash sucks and will hopefully be replace by html5.
Maybe I'm out of the loop, but how "robust" will this so-called "flash" be? Plays YouTube is one thing, especially since YT can serve h264 content (which various phones have HW decoders for). But what about the many sites using serving videos encoded with something else (like VP6)? Does that just peg the tiny proc? What about games – will "Tap=Click" work for enough of them? Can you pinch-to-zoom flash? If I go to MySpace on my phone will it start playing music out loud?
One thing I'm sure will be work: ads.
@Sean, expect someone to make a patch to block ad serving sites with a constantly updating database.
+1, death to flash, all I've used it for is videos and casual games,
I can live without the casual games, and for videos it actually sucks,
I thought netbooks couldn't play smooth web videos because they were underpowered but an HD Stage6 video played just fine,
if DivX didn't have such crappy management, Stage6 could have been the future
Speculation around PreCentral is that flash elements will be disabled when you load a webpage and will only activate if tapped on.
I find this interesting, no one wants Flash 10.1, yet everyone is asking when it will come on their device.
I for one am looking forward to Flash 10.1 on the Palm Pre. If you don't want Flash, disable it on your browser - there, problem solved!
+1 no Flash, Silverlight etc
The future should be standards like HTML 5, it is a real shame Palm, Blackberry and Google haven't also said 'no to flash'
@Thinker
we're not saying no to flash, most of up want to because it is used in a lot of places, what we are saying no to is that flash shouldn't be used in a lot of places especially not video
double typo
"most of us want it"
@ MNJP
Silverlight may be proprietary as well, but at least it doesn't suck like Flash. Silverlight is actually pretty good.
that's because it was made with Flash's suckage in mind, but it's still not Linux-friendly and not coming to mobile anytime soon
Amen! Please if there are any developers reading this please make flash go away please, it's the worst thing for the web since activex.
There are so many great things done with Flash, I don't understand why people have this sentiment. Flash is what people make it, no amount of technology is going to change that. If HTML5 has the same capabilities as Flash, people are just going to do the same things with it.
Hopefully it won't suck as much as the desktop variant...
it's beta so don't expect much ;)
as long as pr0n can be viewed, most people won't care
Why does it suck? I'm not being a smartass, I just don't understand how it sucks.
Doesn't matter. Palm will fold by the time Flash is ready, whenever that may be. :)
Now how about Android devices?
You beat me to it. Now how about an answer from someone?
Ooops, didn't see this. Read my comment a little ways below. It appears it is coming to Android around the same time. The page is similar.
"Adobe Flash Player 10.1 is coming to Android 2.0 and future releases in the first half of 2010"
Yeah, I find it interesting that the message is specific about Android 2.0. Another reason to buy a Droid.
...oh yeah, and Flash definately does NOT suck.
10.1 is scheduled for release for pretty much every smartphone except iPhone and Blackberry in H1 2010. Blackberry will follow, but I don't remember what that timeline was.
All this information was made public at MAX, the Adobe dev conference last month. It was then reiterated at bFlex, a Flex conference in Bloomington a couple weeks ago. We'll probably hear the same timelines again on Friday, at RIA Unleashed in Boston.
My Droid says exactly that....mmmm...flash!
First half of 2010 has been on their roadmap for quite a while now, although the beta was supposed to be out late October.
First half of the year? Just like the Pre launch?
Well, in all honesty, they did meet that.
If everyone kept their promises, there'd be no vaporware. And no Duke Nukem Forever jokes.
What about the iphone, PSP and PS3?
iPhone, you say?
http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/02/adobe-engages-apple-in-passive-aggressive-warfare-with-iphones/
Need I say more?
The PS3 already has flash so you can stop waiting.
While I wish everything just used HTML5 video this is nice feature to have to see all the non video content.
I just checked on my Droid and the page is similar. It says "Adobe Flash Player 10.1 is coming to Android 2.0 and future releases in the first half of 2010".
Finally! A real awsome phone will get flash!
Yes!
Now if palm makes something with a bigger screen and a better cam that takes video, and puts it on tmobile or a decently priced unlocke version, I'll buy one
@Icello: agreed. Please give us a GSM webOS phone in the US with a bigger screen!!
I agree about the bigger screen, but want it on Verizon. Then, the worold would be awsome!
Think...
-Verizon
-PalmWebOS device
-iTunes syncing
-Flash
-Kind of an app store
Thats what i want!
Still waiting for my Microsoft DV AVI plug-in for the iPhone...
how about the Wii?
The Wii has 88MB of RAM. (+3MB VRAM)
And right now when I play a YT video, my Firefox process shoots up around 67-80MB.
It's either Firefox, Adobe or both of them is eating a lot of RAM, but something's telling me that Flash will be infeasible for the Wii.
I would say a combination of both. Flash is heavy on the CPU and Firefox just can't manage memory worth a damn. Still take it over anything else out there though.
Am I missing something? Doesn't the Wii already have Flash?
@Aguiluz
Wii already has flash, just not the most up to date version. I think right now it's on either 8 or 9.
how can Adobe be kinder or gentler when it comes to the iPhone?
Correction:
How can Apple be kinder or gentler to Adobe when Flash comes to the iPhone?
http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/02/adobe-engages-apple-in-passive-aggressive-warfare-with-iphones/
no I meant that Adobe's page for iPhone is spot on. They could not be kinder or gentler.
cant wait! Hulu here we come!!!
If you manage to get hulu without tweaking or going through a proxy server or something I'd be surprised.
Seeing how its blocked on everything except normal desktop browsers.
There will undoubtedly be a mod to change the user agent string of the browser to trick websites into thinking it's a desktop browser, kind of like we already have to trick websites into thinking that we're browsing from an iPhone so that we get the iPhone formatted webpages instead of the desktop version.
I already watch hulu on my Nokia E71 via Skyfire
