Dell Mini 3i officially set for imminent launch in Brazil and China
It would appear those leaked and unintentional early peeks at Dell's first foray into smartphones did not happen in Brazil and China by accident. Hans Erickson of Dell Latin America has announced the decision to "give priority" to those two countries, who will be first to experience the Mini 3i's Android glory, with China receiving devices "in the coming days" and Brazil getting 'em later this year. Interestingly, China Mobile will be making do without 3G, while Brazil's Claro will be offering a 3G-enabled handset. Dell remains mum on pricing and the rest of the spec, though all the information so far indicates that Brazilians will be able to buy the same WiFi-packing FCC-certified 3iX handset that's heading to the US. Either way, we've got another heavyweight's presence in the smartphone market, and we'll be even happier once we know what Dell's value-add will be.
Update: Official Dell press release is out making it clear that this is just the "initial" smartphone from Dell.

sweet more competition!
What? No hockey mask on the screen?
What does the Jason app do?
Kill! kill kill kill kill killl?
What does the Jason app do?
Kill! kill kill kill kill killl?
Dang namit!
I'd rather face Jason 1-on-1 than Engadget's comment system!
They fixed it. The original image was Jason-less.
You're right about the competition. For that reason, no one including youself
will be buying this phone.
Ugh, dial 611 and get tech support in India, speaking Portuguese (and Chinese).
Gotta give them credit for not putting the home button right where that "dell" logo is.
computer companies should just stick with computers, why can't they? samsung and htc are the better android makers
Why are computer companies going to Cell phones. Maybe because they have vision. In the years to come Laptops will even be too cumbersome for accessing the internet. It will all be about communicating weather it be email, txt, or voice. The comnpany(s) that produce products that can do it all and be extreemly mobile will make it. BTW Cell phones ARE computers they have MAC addresses, IP adresses, proccess information etc.
Absolutely. Apple should shut down their iPhone operations immediately! I mean, WHAT ARE THEY THINKING! Geesh, will they ever learn?
@oringal its because cell phones and computer are pretty much the same, cell phones are 4inch computers. Anyway i think its good because the more companies get on the scene the more ideas will start to flow.
Wha-wha-wha-wha-what!!!?
You mean they're not buying Palm!?
Ops! This is a recognition of the presence of Brazil in the world. AT least is much better than microsoft that do not even mention Brazil in the country choices in their sites. Brazil ever!!! forget Buenos Aires, Venezuela and Colombia
why are most phones so Ugly? This looks horribly boring even if the functionality is there.
Because quit a number of people don't look at their phone as a fashion accessory.
it's all in the eye of the beholder...
iPhone 3GS user here; I think it looks great. Too bad it's still using a version of that Qualcomm ARM11 chip.
I want something JUST like the N900, but with a capacitive touchscreen (else the virtual KB is useless).
The HTC HD2 would be great if it didn't run such a failure of an operating system and had a few more buttons for my emulators.
Great news for Brazilians... But I don't think Claro will subside much of it's final price. This will be their first Android phone, but judging how they charge for other smartphones, it will be very expensive unless you sign for a 3000 minutes account. We still don't have unlimited calls plans around here, can you believe it?
I believe the Dext will come out earlier than this one.
The closest thing of an unlimited plan we have is Tim's infinity plan...which is only valid if you call another Tim.
We actually do have an unlimited call/data/message plan on TIM, but they don't even advertise it, since it’s so ridiculously expensive: R$900 month!!!!! That’s around $520 (dollars) a month!!!! In case any millionaires are interested, it’s called the "Da Vinci" plan http://www.tim.com.br/portal/site/PortalWeb/menuitem.593818766b1569fe58c01410c1e207a0/?vgnextoid=c0950bb5fa260210VgnVCM100000a22e700aRCRD&wfe_pweb_area=67&wfe_pweb_estado=26&
Holy Crap, Batman =O
I am a proud Brazilian! Not only do we get great gadgets, but we get them _before_ the US!
Can you feel it, US engadget readers?
* Waves giant Brazilian flag
Ok, enough for now.
so finally the "progress" promised in the flag is reaching brazil. no we just have to wait for the "order" part to be delivered.
Now you're asking for demotion...
Smart move by DELL... they are a lot of competition here in the US (iphone,RIM) by releasing this phone in China and Brazil where the population is greater than the US...
Now... bring the phone to the US soon......
There is aways a Brazilian fellow who is wiling to show his patriotism overseas and embarrass the rest of us -_- *sight*
Too bad only Claro will be selling them. But I don't worry, soon Tim will enter the fight, like them did to the iPhone.
A Dell smart phone?
Hope it's better manufactured than their lowly computers..... And I hope thy let you upgrad after 1 year when the thing either stops working or falls apart.....Dell is junk.
Anyone got his own experience but for the last 5 years, all our Dell laptops (home + company) are perfect.
But junk (read that as "commodity") smartphones ARE the wave of the future.
Need we be reminded of the $30 Palm Pixi that hasn't been released yet?
Dell has been an intragral part of my home computing environment for the past 7 years with stellar performance and support. You are obviously jaded because of a bad experience. Well here is some news. get used to it. Computer companies are like the cable comany, phone company, car makers etc. They need to balance customer service costs with the need to keep prices low to be marketable. We demand lower and lower costs all of the time but the consequences of our demand for lower prices is customer support. BTW you may want to check out TBR which is a major consumer reporting firm for consumer electronics. Dell has been ranked #1 oin CONSUMER and ENTERPRISE customer satisfaction in the past and recently. If you are going to come out with a statement dell is junk maybe you could do some research.
My office is full of Dells and we haven't had any problems that don't occur on every other pc. They tick along fine until they get old and the specs can't handle our needs, then we get new ones. You know, like it goes for every other computer in the world. I have seen nothing about Dells that makes them "junk".
Correct fmarcos. It will take long till brazilians gete the same treatment as developed countries. Government should allow more competion and not to promote this under-the-table-agreements.
iLike!
iLike!
dell has a value add?
I'm with Brrt, Dell is JUNKY.
Horrific. I don't know how Dell managed to make Android's UI even more dense and unfriendly, but here we are. Seriously people, its not that hard, make your UI's a bit more like the HTC Sense and you'll be all right. No more stupid gimmicks like the Droid, and just throwing down icons in a rigid grid isn't going to do you any favors.
ummmmm, is that an Ad at the top of the phone?
Does anyone else see the irony in this?
Japan has Sony. When a cool item comes out, they make it only avaiable in Japan.
S. Korea has Samsung. When a cool item comes out, it is only available in S. Korea.
The USA has DELL. When a cool item comes out, they make it exclusive to China and Brazil!!!
for real though, can somebody please explain what Dell's value-add is on ANY of their products? Anybody can make a Windows computer, or an Android phone. They don't add much in terms of design, or performance, or customer service. What, exactly, is their selling point? It's not even price anymore. Interesting question, from a business-school discussion-type perspective.
Now I'm in doubt... in one article it does say it will arrive here (in Brazil) soon, but in another article it says it will arrive in the next few days ("O aparelho estará nas lojas nos próximos dias", afirmou João Cox, presidente da Claro.)... don't now
I honestly think the screen should be bigger.
Why is there a drawn hand holding this phone? I guess they didn't want to pay a hand model. Zoolander, hello.
Is this a slider?
If not, it needs more buttons for me to be cool with it. How else will I play my emulators?
Dell = Shit. Unless you like reaching into your pocket for a pile of steaming shit stick, buy an HTC. You'll thank me later Brazil.
