Dell's Adamo XPS now on sale starting at $1,799
Dell's slimmest laptop ever still isn't shipping out to eager consumers, but at least the Win7-packin' Adamo XPS is now configurable over on the outfit's website. The base $1,799 configuration includes a 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo SU9400 CPU, a 128GB solid state drive, 13.4-inch WLED panel, 2 megapixel camera, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, GS45 integrated graphics, WiFi and a USB Ethernet adapter. Unfortunately, hardly any of the components are upgradable, but there are a few select upgrades available for those with the cheddar. The scary part? That December 22nd estimated ship date. Better spring for overnight and cross those toes!

what good is a SSD if the CPU is so slow
I'll never get used to that screen-past-the-keyboard thing. Looks like it ruins the purpose of it being thin.
I'm sure there will be plenty of comments in here complaining of how horrible it is, even though they've never tried it.
That's because it's the obvious truth. :|
I thought the thinness only helps with storage... weight maybe too
Actually, what is the benefit to the thin designs? They look thin? They don't seem easier to type on, and they are usually way too tall and wide for easy carrying.
Are these just dumb designs? I always thought the Mac Air was inferior to the powerbooks in design, for example. They looked different, is all.
if they would switch the keyboard location with the screen location (so the keyboard is on the longer of the two pieces) then they might have something.
Q. how often have you had to adjust your screen while working? A. all the time. fortunately with all other laptops adjusting the tilt of the screen doesn't frak with the tilt of the entire device.
dell's adamo fails again
@Darwin -
I'm with you on that. Didn't Paul (who actually tried it out) say that it really wasn't that bad to use?
Q. how often have you had to adjust your screen while working?
A. Maybe this screen doesn't have the same shitty vertical viewing angles that most notebooks have. That might be worth the price alone.
@Darwin - No, I've never used the Adamo but for me this design is utterly useless. As I write this I'm sitting on a sofa with my laptop perched on my... wait for it... lap. There's no way that the Adamo is every going to feel comfortable doing that, period. Yes, I use this machine on a desk as well but why am I going to pay a $100 premium over the vastly more powerful Macbook Air (for example) for a thin, portable, ultralight machine that's basically a desktop replacement?
Vastly more powerful? Really?
WANT. Anyone know the battery life on this puppy and when it will get USB 3.0 ports?
USB 3.0 is the only thing keeping me from buying a new lappy.
It looks kind of weird but I would be willing to give it a chance. It might be more comfortable. I like to have my screen pretty far back most of the time and my keyboard at a slight angle. Also it will keep the hot bottom of the notebook from resting on my lap right?
The Adamo XPS uses a SU9400 C2D. Even the first gen Macbook air is more powerful than that. In fact, most notebook CPUs are vastly more powerful than the Adamo XPS. The chip's strength is battery life, so don't be worried about processing power.
it's a laptop, but how am i supposed to rest this on my lap? poor design!
I've actually used it on my lap... The Adamo is so light and well balanced you can easily use it on your lap! Stop fearing change we must have progress.
I like my keyboard to be as flat as possible. In fact it's bad for your wrists to have to arch them up for a keyboard that is raised cuts the blood flow off and stretches your wrist (for long periods of time if ur me). Having it flat has really helped my wrists out, even thought about using the inverted Microsoft one but flat is fine.
This thing has permanently raised keyboard...and while I haven't tried it, it does look waaay too high as well, almost type writer high. Also how do u use it as a laptop? if u lean forwards just a little its going to tilt in the direction of the screen much more than a standard layout of laptop (since the weight looks to be at the screen and not under the keyboard). Dunno would have to try it but it looks like a see saw to me.
Oh and its fugly (just f*****g ugly)
I agree with the haters of that hinge - no way that would work for me. Nice lappie otherwise.
@Eddie:
the battery life is pretty scarry: "The 20Whr battery is rated to deliver 2 hours and 36 minutes of battery life." acording to Dell
What about ham fisted users?
I feel like the frame would have to be made of titanium to support my heavy arms... And my fingers cramp up if I hover my palms and don't support the weight.
I also picture this thing tipping over easily. Anyone else?
I'm a fan of Dell, but Adamo has me puzzled.
You might want to see a doctor on that one. Doesn't seem normal to me.
this is a borderline useless product, IMO, but i eagerly await the second generation regular adamo
That's like waiting for HP to bring back the 133 Envy style. :(
And the reason to get this over the similarly spec'd 13in Acer Timeline, which has the same cpu(in some areas they even have the SU9600) and in some area a gpu that isn't the intel 4500hd?
I like my laptops to eat things.
Can someone please tell me why someone at Dell thought it was a good idea to take the existing Adamo and flip where the screen and keyboard were located? Were they high or something???
yes...yes they where...*puff puff*
WHERE YOU AT?!
Well, you must applaud Dell's design team for going green even if they mistook the expression.
Man, this makes a Macbook Air seem like such a sweet deal.
Yep.
The only place where the Adomo soundly beats the Air is in the RAM department. The Adomo has twice the RAM of the Air, that should make a pretty good difference in performance.
I know people want thin, light, and portable, but this is redonkulus!
Whoa!
HTC HD2 review?
Please share.
HTC HD2 review?
Whoa! ---> AW HO!
I've cracked the code.
The HD2 review? Your restoring the ability to rank the elit-[hemm...] I mean 'editors'?
A WHO! ---> is that it?
i went to the website and you can't configure it persee, just add options like external hard drive, external optical drive, included software, warranty, belkin easy transfer cable, ect. however, I have not been following the Adamo XPS so I'm not sure if it ever was supposed to be internally configurable.
sorry, i just skimed over the summary, disregard (and downrank me like i know you will)
Wow!
The logic behind this design is the so call 'reserved concept' to create a space underneath the lappy for better air circulations... in that process they bypass the simple raise-able/fold-able lever (ala keyboard stand) for this abomination?
Foldable lever like on a keyboard doesn't work on a lap.
Wouldn't it just be easier to clean the fans on your laptop every 6 months to avoid overheating? I mean, manufacturers take into account the amount of heat that a processor generates when they design a notebook.
Owh and good luck using this on your laps...
Just remove the keyboard and give me a tablet already!!
A kitten could break this thing!
The same could be said about the macbook air... but it seems to do alright.
buying right now....
