Lenovo's ThinkPad X100e gets detailed: AMD Neo-based, not a netbook
We've already gotten a few brief, mysterious glimpses of Lenovo's thin-and-light ThinkPad X100e (sometimes known as the X200e), but it looks like things are now starting to get a bit more real. Contrary to previous speculation, this one's not, it seems, a ThinkPad netbook, but an "entry ultraportable," which apparently means that it is small, thin and light just like a netbook, and has a "netbook-like price point" -- it's just... not a netbook. Less nebulous are the device's specs, which include an 11.6-inch, 1366 x 768 display, an AMD Athlon Neo processor, support for up to 4GB of RAM, up to a 320GB hard drive, optional 3G and GPS and, of particular note to some particular folks, a distinctly ThinkPad keyboard, trackpad and trackpoint. Still no indication of a release date just yet, but it looks like you will at least be able to get this one in your choice of black, red or white, despite its distinctly business-minded nature.

Typical ThinkPad hotness...
Yes finally a netbook with a nipple.
What about the Sony Vaio P?
*ahem* vaio p is DEF not a netbook.
I will give it credit for using AMD but that giant bezel on the top....
battery life?
Thinkpad needs to pick up it's style act.
For me it's not a Thinkpad unless it reminds me of the monument from 2001: A Space Odyssy. That is the aesthetic they should strive for.
Almost look like a white macbook from the outside, and a typical thinkpad inside, it's actually kinda nice. Though I still prefer the all black thinkpad.
"thin and light just like a netbook, and has a "netbook-like price point" -- it's just... not a netbook"
reminds me of the vaio P
apart from that pricepoint of course, :P
one other source i read mentioned a supposed price point around $500. that would be an excellent deal if lenovo were to release it at that price.
and the performance. Vaio P has sub netbook performance.
M.
which GPU?
Based on its chipset, it should have an integrated HD3200, which is far better than the GMA950 disaster found in most netbooks, but still well behind the Ion/9400M.
If by "AMD Neo" you mean "Turion Neo L625 with Radeon 4330" then I'll take 4
not really, since I couldn't afford it
unless you guys wanted to give me 4.....please?
If you RTFA you'd see it's an AMD Athlon MV40 with RS780 IGP
Someone needs to CTFA...
Oops, meant CTFO. Come ON engadget, are you ever going to implement comment editing? This is pretty sad, considering you're a blog about technology.
sweet
How does this compare to intel CULV?
Whoever it is whose pic you've stolen here as your avatar just made it impossible for me to answer your question.
That is "Pretty in Blue" by Mike Beehan.

Thanks for the info sschwend. Wow AMD is still far behind... it's not even 45 nm process yet.

wow...so I can get a weaker proc that consumes more battery? kickass
Stop using your little half breed asian/white sister in your avatar. : P
Surely you can use a more acceptable term than half breed?
NEVER! It's interesting how almost every time someone comments on her.
Sorry, mixed-race? Eurasian?
or bi-racial. Half breed has a very bad history, and in actual usage, it imples someone is half of something than say, a mix of ethnicity.
possibly nsfw

If you only care about battery life and pure CPU performance then yes, Intel CULV is better. This is clearly one of Lenovo's budget Thinkpads though. Lenovo does make CULV-based Thinkpads, and guess what? They cost 3x as much. AMD's mobile CPUs are all still K8 architecture, I don't think they're trying to compete in CPU performance benchmarks with this platform.

The real kicker for me is the GPU. I have a Thinkpad X200 tablet (1.86GHz C2D SL9400, 4500MHD, 3GB RAM). The CPU performance is great, good battery life even with the 4-cell battery, and in general I love system. However, the graphics performance is a joke. I do occasionally like to play games, and it's basically unusable for that (I expected this when I bought it).
I would personally gladly trade some CPU performance and/or battery life for a real integrated GPU. Hopefully in the future Lenovo will offer an option for AMD-based versions of their higher-end Thinkpads too, or better yet AMD will come out with a chipset for Intel CPU's (this will never happen, just dreaming).
Overall this looks like a great budget system. If I needed a laptop for $500 or less, this would be it.
"Netbook" with a trackpoint!?!?!
DO WANT!!!
If I contact lenovo directly and shake a stick at them, will i be able to buy this without an operating system loaded at a reduced price?
Very nice, glad its not an atom. Speaking of which, why havnt AMD bothered to release a better alternative to the atom? The netbook spec seem very constricted probably because intel call the shots.
This has got to be the ugliest fucking laptop I've ever seen. Its like someone tried to make a new laptop look as old as possible without sprinkling dust on it.
With no proper 7 row keyboard (delete/home/end/pgup/pgdn in right places), that is NOT a Thinkpad keyboard
And is this the one that we saw a spyshot of earlier? The one that was a fingerprint magnet?
More than the lack of seventh-row, the chiklet-style keys make it not a thinkpad keyboard
First thinkpad with industrial design thrown in...I like...
@Nomi
Contrary to what Apple has told you, a chiclet keyboard and white plastic casing does not equal industrial design.
In fact, seeing as how ID is (should be) the culmination of aesthetics and usability--and when successfully executed, results in iconic, classic products--I'd say that this turd exhibits LESS industrial design than any true Thinkpad.
Does look a lil' chunky for a netbook...
Looks more like a chiclet keyboard than a Thinkpad keyboard. And I really, really don't like the white version. It clashes too much with the black palmrest and interior and just makes it look old. They should match the colours and keep the keyboard/touchpad colour the same.
@Sarim
Agreed. And, okay, it's a stretch but I guess I can make concessions for keeping the keys black (white keys are harder to see and get filthy pretty quickly), but the bezel and palmrest?? Does Lenovo WANT people to know that their products are made in China?
well, at least this will make nokia feel shy with its booklet 3g
looks promising! def going on my "want" list
Maybe they don't want to defile the ThinkPad brand, so they aren't calling it a netbook.
That's right I used a vocab word.
If they can't put a TrackPad into X200
How did they do so in a smaller computer?
If the keyboard sucks then it probably isn't a ThinkPad
The reason is exactly that, this is in no way a ThinkPad, the touchpad being so close to the edge with no overlap to protect it is surely going to result in physical damage to the buttons at some point and would not be acceptible to the proper ThinkPad design team
It has a 6 row keyboard and made of cheap plastic, this is just like the SL series ThinkPads which are not proper ThinkPads either and they are really starting to tarnish the brand imho
